I'm a new member on this forum, and would especially like to reach out to travelers and expats with families who are thinking of settling down in Laos.
I am the Headmaster of the new, international school that recently opened in Luang Prabang . (I will avoid public mention of the school name on this open forum - I do not want to be accused of spamming.)
Last year, we set up our school in Luang Prabang, albeit in temporary accommodation.
Building work began on a superb new campus that's located in a beautiful rural location on the outskirts of the town. That new campus is slated to open at the start of the new school year in September 2013.
For expats with families, providing decent schooling for their children in Luang Prabang was a bit of a problem, but I hope my school can provide a solution for all age levels. Our current school intake includes both Lao and expat childr... more »
Hi, all you lovely people :)
Could you be so kind as to share your expertise with a first-timer to Myanmar ?
My rough itinerary is basically get in, Yangon, Kalaw, Lake Inle, Bagan and get out. With some cycling, and a river cruise thrown in for good measure.
Obviously I want to support local people, so transport are limited to privately operated trains, planes and ferries. Accommodation in temples or similar private arrangements would be great.
And lastly, wikipedia has limited information about Myanmar food. From what I've read so far is that there is a good reason the food isn't known well, and that is that it is not worth knowing about at all. Suck that, I want to eat nothing but Myanmar food during those 8 days, so any recommendations are welcome. I love biriyani :)
How does this look ?
Day 1 Arrive Yangon 6pm, night bus to Kawal
Day 2 cycle Kawal to Inle Lake,... more »
I will be in Siem Reap on June 28, and plan to visit the Angkor complex on June 29. I am staying at one of the guest houses.
I am looking for someone to join me in one of the motorcycle taxis to tour the complex. They seat two so we can share cost, and have a nice time rather than seeing it alone.
I am male, so the opposite sex will be enjoyable, but it is not necessary - anyone is welcome. I only speak English.
Please send me a message through this board and we can exchange details.
I will be travelling to Vietnam soon and have been told that Vietnam holds host to some lovely Hot springs and Mud Baths.
I will be travelling to Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An and Hanoi only. Does anyone know of hot springs or mud baths in or around these areas?
We're going to be in Vietnam for all of October, travelling from Ho Chi Minh up to Hanoi and flying out of there. We're planning to do some trekking around Sapa and maybe elsewhere too (central highlands perhaps?).
I'm just trying to figure out what sort of temperatures we should expect. I keep reading that the weather can be "cold" or "cool" but it would be helpful to know actual temperature ranges! Also, are average temperatures for Sapa generally the same as surrounding areas or lower/higher?
My summer plans still aren't finalised. One option is to head into Xinjiang and, from there, into Central Asia; the other is to head south through Yunnan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and then back up into China via Singapore (And Hainan). However; I'm unsure whether it is actually possible to cross from China to Myanmar overland. I've seen lots of info about crossing from China to Vietnam and Laos (And crossed into Vietnam many times) but not Myanmar. Can this be done? Can this be done easily? What sort of cost can I expect? I live in Beijing so would it be advisable to get the visa sorted out before I go or can this be done in Kunming (I got a Vietnam visa there in Feb easily and quickly)? If it isn't possible to cross from China, what about from Laos?
What about crossing out of Myanmar? Is it possible to cross, by land (preferably, by train) from Myanmar to T... more »

Hey to all the motorcyclists out there,
My partner and I have just spent 2 weeks in Pai and hired a moped to get around.
Yesterday we travelled from Pai to Soppong to visit the Tham Lod Cave.
The road is part of the 'Mae Hong Son Loop' and I've got to say it was the most exhilarating ride of my life!
Now I am not a rider, merely a pillion but I've heard that the ride from Da Nang to Hue in Vietnam is meant to be one of the best in the world.
Better than Pai to Soppong in Thailand? I find it hard to imagine.
Has anyone done both and which is better?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts :-)
I am going to go to Cambodia from Australia on a UK passport within the next 10 days. When I spoke with Flight Centre to get prices, they said to enter Cambodia you need to have proof that you have an ticket to leave the country.
Now I know this has been discuessed a lot on here, and the result is that you do not need a ticket to prove your intension to leave Cambodia (correct me if im wrong), but Ive just rang Malaysia Airlines, who I would be flying with, and they seem to think that you DO have to have a return/onward ticket to be granted a tourist visa.
Can somebody please confirm what the actual process is - do I need one or not? Im planning on giving the embassy a call tomorrow to check also.
Thanks for any advice.
We are planning a quick trip through Vietnam for two and a half weeks in August.
We are going to fly into HCMC, and see a few sights while making our way to Hanoi.
From there the plan is to take the train to Beijing.
Has anyone had any experience with catching this train and crossing the boarder?
We are also wondering whether we need to book our tickets in advance or if we can
buy them in Hanoi a few days before we depart (i imagine it will be cheaper if we can avoid a 3rd party).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
I'm in saigon selling my honda wave 110cc.
The bike is in very good condition, got me from danang to saigon no problem.
The bike comes with:
- good helmet
- rain coat
- chain w/ lock
- rubber strap to secure your luggage
I am looking to get 350$ for it all, if you are interested or have any questions you can contact me by sending me a pm or whatsapp (+31640973118)
Does anybody know if the Namheuang, Laos - Thaly, Thailand border crossing (the one near Loei in Thailand and Kenthao in Laos) is open to foreigners and if visa on arrival (in Laos) is available? I have read conflicting reports.
Also, any information on state of road Kenthao to Sayaboury in rainy season?
Finally does anybody know if the flights Vientiane - Sayaboury are currently running?
Many thanks for any help!
I'm look for advice and insights on studying martial arts in Asia. I plan to come to Asia in Sept (preferably somewhere warm by a beach) to study martial arts for 3 months. I have not picked a location or type of art yet. I'm trying to find a form of art that is more spiritual (I admire ancient ways of life similar to the samurai & yoga practices) but still allows me to defend myself (ideally without a strong likelihood of breaking bones). thanks!
I am part of a group five 21 year old female students heading to SE Asia for 6.5 weeks.
Firstly I have to admit the amount of research we have done regarding our trip is limited due our exams only finishing this week - we leave for Thailand this sunday.
- Basically our plan is flying into Bangkok and staying there for 3 nights (hostel booked) and then heading north to Chang mai for a few days. Following this we are not sure whether to go Vietnam- Cambodia - south Thailand or Cambodia - Vietnam- south Thailand
Also would love to get suggestions of the main things to see/do in Cambodia and Vietnam - i am doing some research of my own but would really appreciate advice from those who have 'seen it and done it.'
Hi guys please can I have some thoughts of this trip plan : we are going to leave the UK on Dec 21st and return Jan 18th (1 month) with a budget of £5000 max.
Fly to Bangkok - 2 nights here
Fly to the South and do Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi (we've already done Chaing mai, Koh Samui and Full Moon Party)
Fly to Cambodia (we dont know where to go here so thoughts would be helpful, any travel now will be on bus/train)
Make our way up to Vietnam (again thoughts and info on this would be helpful)
Maybe do Laos then fly back to Bangkok and fly home
Please, please, please send us some more info.
