Visa & Soon to Expire Passport

Flying into Yangon November 5th. My U.S. passport expires next January. According to the Myanmar embassy website, I need to have a passport valid for 6 months. It is not clear if that is when you apply for the visa or when you enter the country. I would like to get the visa now anyway but especially if it means not having to deal with a passport renewal. Any experience with this?

Also the website (in the section for tourist visas) says:

4. A recommendation letter from employer addressed to: Visa section, Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, give brief description about occupation, purpose of visit, intended arrival and departure dates. Package tour travelers are requested to provide a copy of the package program. http://www.myanmarembassy.com/english/visa.htm

In other visa postings I have not seen any reference to anyone needing a letter. Any experience w... more »

Accomodation in January

I will be in Myanmar at the end of December, beginning of January visiting Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and possibly the coast, the question is am I going to have huge problems finding accommodation if I don`t pre-book everything, I have heard reports that everything is booked up to 6 months in advance but also there are plenty of small family run guest houses and its not a problem, does anybody have any info please.

Travel Health in Myanmar

I've been living or traveling in Asia and SE Asia on and off since 1988, so I know one basic truth in life: Asia is dirty, and you have to deal with it.

But for some reason I've had a strong reaction the past five days in Nyaungshwe (Inle Lake), and by that I mean both mental and physical. This pretty little village surrounded by lovely mountains (creating a natural basin) is getting very polluted. Eating outdoors along most of the main and many of the not-so-main streets is a challenge because your lungs and food are going to gather fumes or dust from the non-stop parade of trucks and cars and motorcycles. And in your hotel the odds are very good that at some time you will breathe smoke or ash from garbage fires. That combination has triggered some of the worst asthma attacks I've had in years. And for two days I could not keep any food in my stomach for more than an hour.

Upcoming trip to Myanmar

My partner and I are currently in Laos and are wanting to visit Myanmar for roughly 10 days, we have some destinations in mind but are wondering if a more concrete itinerary is necessary.

We've heard mixed stories of the government taking advantage of tourists, drastically increasing prices and funneling money away from the people. Has anyone had any experience with this and can offer some insight?

Also wondering if we can get a visa in Chiang Mai or even online?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
-Ryan

Another 10 day trip to Myanmar

Hi all,

like many others on this forum we also have a 10 day trip to Myanmar. We fly into Yangon and out of Mandalay. My question is that as our time is short and we want to use it most efficiently (we'll be using buses, so will need to take into account the frequency of buses, length of journey times etc), which is the best route to travel?

Yangon-Inle Lake-Bagan-Mandalay or Yangon-Bagan-Inle Lake-Mandalay.

Ps, the current turnaround time for visas at the London office is very fast, we posted application on Monday 3rd June and received back on Friday 7th June.

Many thanks

Stuart

Itinerary Myanmar for 10 days between Sept 20 and Oct 10

Hi,

I will be working in Asia this summer and after the end of my contract I´d like to travel a bit in the region. The thing is that I can start to travel from around Sept 20 and until Oct 10. I am hesitating between Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Myanmar - or better, I´d do 2 destinations. BUT... at this period in most SE Asian countries, there is the rainy season... Do you think I can enjoy travelling in Myanmar at that period? If yes, in which part (for cca 10 days). I would have a flight connection to Yangon.
And another thing, is it safe for a girl to travel alone in Myanmar? Or better 2 girls?

Thanks a lot for your help! :-)

specific visa and flight questions

Hi all, I have flights booked from BKK to Yangon in July, but my visa is not yet sorted. In the country where I live (not my home country), the Myanmar embassy wants a schedule of travel booked through an agency, as part of the application process. Is this a normal part of the visa application at the Myanmar embassy in any country?

My preferred choice, if it works, to get the visa sorted, is to use the online visa on arrival service of www.myanmarvisa.com. They say they issue a letter to give to the airline so that you are allowed to board the flight, and you can then get the visa there. So very specifically, has anyone flown Air Asia into Yangon, using this visa company? At check in, did the airline accept the letter they issue? I couldn't get a clear answer when I phoned Air Asia myself as to whether they accept this practice.

If I had to get the visa in BKK, as same day serv... more »

Driver for 6 people possible?

Hi,

we want to go on a Family vacation in Myanmar in october. We have taken a driver to show us around in the past in Bali, Thailand and the Philippines. Is this also a possiblity in Myanmar? The problem is that we are 6 people and we probably would need a Minibus.
We would arrive in Rangoon in late October and want to go to Bagan and maybe lake Inle and then fly out of Mandalay. We would have a week or so to do this before heading over to Bangkok.
Do you have any recommendations for our trip?

Thanks!

Hsipaw/Lashio

Have two questions but they're related...

Is Hsipaw safe from the troubles flaring up between Buddhists and Muslims that has occurred in Lashio?

If so, is the quickest way to get to Hsipaw from Rangoon to go directly by bus or car or to fly from Rangoon to Lashio and then arrange overland transport to Hsipaw?

Thanks

Mount Victoria in July

I would really like to trek up Mount Victoria in Chin State during July. I heard that it could be rainy and muddy at this time however I wonder if anyone has done this trek during monsoon, if so could let me know what it was like in practice? I do not mind some rain and mud however would like to know whether it is worth doing or not.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers
Jim
