cost of places to stay in manila.

I Just saw that Friendlys Guest house in Malate Manila has put there prices up.
a Fan Dorm bed in a room with 12 beds per room was php325 now php450 a night. up 40%.

But there are still some good deals in Manila for Backpackers.
Islas Guest house has dorm beds for php166 a night.
and the Manila youth hostel still has dorm beds for php270 a night.
the new Buoy hostel has dorm beds for php330 a night.

Road traffic

Yesterday I took the ceres bus from Dumaguete to Cebu, then today I was on a bus from Manila to Dau, and on both occasions it seems like the number of private vehicles on the road has gone up enormously. Probably a function of the steadily growing disposable income here. but whats going to happen when number of SUVs outpaces the number of tricycles on the roads??..

August Trip - Malapascua and then ?

Hi - I am planning on heading to Malapascua for some diving at the start of August and am just planning my trip. I may have up to 2 weeks to travel. If I spent 5 to 7 days at Malapascua - does anyone have any bright ideas of other places I could (easily!) get to for the rest of my time?

I'm not into crazy parties and so am planning to give Borocay a miss. But would prefer a relaxed pace of life - beaches, diving, wildlife etc rather than cities.

Really grateful for your thoughts!

Thanks,
Claire.

Travel agents using fake visa extension stamps - a warning!

Wow what next?! Thought I would post this as a heads up. Only use accredited BoI travel agents or do your extensions yourself.

Japanese national arrested for fake visa extension stamps on passport

MANILA, Philippines–The Bureau of Immigration arrested Monday a Japanese national after he was caught with fake visa extension on his passport.

Immigration Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. identified the Japanese national as Hidenobu Yuzawa, 38. Yuzawa went to the bureau’s main office in Intramuros, Manila to have his stay extended.

Yuzawa’s application for extension of stay was, however, rejected after personnel at the BI visa extension section discovered two fake visa extension stamps on his passport. He was then endorsed to the BI intelligence division, charged with immigration law violation at the legal division and committed to the BI detention center in Bicutan, Taguig.

Tarsiers at Corella?

We are currently in Bohol and are shopping around for a countryside tour by car. All the set agenda only include the tarsiers near Loboc. We asked about Corella instead but were told they don't go there.

Also, we aren't interested in the Loboc river lunch buffet but all the tours seem to go there.

If we want to add Corella and skip the Loboc river tour, how much extra should we expect to pay? Going rate seems to be 2000php for the day tour.

Where to spend last day/night (not Malate)?

We are looking for suggestions for where to stay in Manila on our last night after we arrive from Puerto Princessa. We fly back to Manila in the AM and our international flight leaves the next day at 3pm.

Our first day in Manila we stayed at Chillout Guesthouse, and we just travelled through Manila again and stayed at Friendlys. We didn't like either place so booke our last night in Manila at Malate Pensionne. But we have already explores the Malate area, Rizal Park, and Intramuros. So not sure staying in Malate again makes sense.

Any suggestions for our last day/night? What about the Makati area near the MOA and the boardwalk?

Advice for long weekend dive trips while in the PI

Hello!

I have been reading all the fabulous posts and advice from folks in the forum and found all of it so very helpful! Thanks in advance for that! I'm going to the PI for just over two weeks for work, and want to make the most of some long weekends. My primary motivation is diving and seeing the beautiful waters and wildlife within. Here is a tentative itinerary, would love comments and suggestions :) The work days are non-negotiable or moveable...sigh...

Work - Manila 5/4-5/11
Fun - Alona Beach and diving Balicasag 5/11-5/13 (staying at Oasis resort?)
Work - Bacolod City and Iloilo City 5/13-5/15
Fun - Leave Iloilo the evening of 5/15 to head back to Manila?
Fun - Busuanga and diving the wrecks of Coron 5/16-5/19 (staying at MiCasa?)*
Leave - back to Manila the evening of 5/19 for flight home the morning of 5/20

  • I know I would only be able to do wreck dives 5/17-5/...

Good news from Legaspi

Friends of mine were in Legaspi southern Luzon and at a stop 1 of their bags fell out the side door of the van . It contained Passport, $2,000 Aust cash and I phone 5 . A local Pedi Cab rider found it and advertised it on local TV , he then got a friend to call Dad on the phone and a very worried Australian was returned his bag. He rewarded the rider and said the look on his face was so good to see.

Cebu Nightlife

Hi,

I'm heading to Cebu for a night on the 27th of April and wondering where is a good place to go at night. I'd like to see local indie bands playing alternative, rock or reggae as well as clubs playing house music.

Thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks :)

Moving to Manila - Working in Ortigas Center, Pasig City

Hi All,

I'm an Indian, about to move to Manila following a job offer. My Office is Wynsum Corporate Plaza, Emerald Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig City, Metro Manila. My salary is in the range of 100,000 Peso per month and like advice with regards to

1. Where to stay near office : (So that I dont spend time commuting and invest cost of travel into apartment cost)

2.Apartment Purchase : I have about 12 Lac PH Peso as my savings. Now ...as someone who will be moving in with a Work Visa, Will I be able to purchase an apartment with an intention to sell it at the end of my work tenure (a few years later). I understand I will have to take up additional loan and 12 Lac Peso would be less but the point is will I be legally be allowed to purchase an apartment ? And what is the land appreciation in Manila ?

I was thinking of point no. 2 after seeing some of the decent rentals cost... more »

Swindle by JB Rent-a-car

On April 6, 2013 we paid JB Rent-a-car in Manila (they are presently located in Ermita, Adriatico Street) 17.500 pesos (equivalent to about 350 euro) for a car with driver for 5 days. They promised to collect us from our hotel the next morning at 10 AM. Nobody showed up and nobody rang us about any problems. We inquired several times and finally (around noon) decided that JB rent-a-car had breached the contract and we demanded restitution of our money. JB refused to do this. We went to their office the next day and took some of their files and their computer outside with us in order to put some pressure on the process. After a while (the lady-owner was not present, only a secretary) the police arrived. We explained our case and they seemed to understand the problem. We were invited to join them to the police head quarters together with the secretary and the confiscated files. After a ... more »
