New Mayor for Manila....

At long last Manila has rid itself of that awful Mayor Lim (the guy who closed Baywalk, probably cos the bar owners there weren't paying him enough).

He has been replaced by the benevolent Mayor Erap, who has pledged to "help the poor people of Manila."
Now I know when he was President he vowed to "help the poor people of the Philippines", but I guess all those late night parties in the Palace, boozing expensive red wines took a toll and maybe he ran out of steam.
I'm sure he'll do better this time out...

Philippines airlines Baggage allowance now 10kg.

Philippines airlines has slashed the free baggage allowance per passenger from 15kg to 10kg.
and at the same time raised the fee slapped on for excess baggage for domestic flights to php200 per kg.
and if you don't check in 45 minutes prior to departure you will have to pay a php1500 fee.

Can I travel around while my passport is at the Indian embassy?

Hi there,

My boyfriend and I will be travelling to SEA and then on to India next year. I know we can get an Indian visa in Thailand or Malaysia but the waiting times are around 5 - 10 business days.

My question is, can we travel around the country (not across borders of course) while our passport is at the embassy in Bangkok or KL? Is it sufficient to have a copy of our passport with us?

Many thanks!

Choosing honeymoon destination

Hello fellow travellers,
I'm trying to figure out the best destination for our honeymoon next year in February. I get to choose where we go and prepare the whole shabang, but she imposed the conditions ( to which I agreed). The criteria are few but very precise.:

  • see vulcanoes and heavy vulcanic activity (lots of fumaroles, mud pots, volcanoes etc);
  • clear skies and good temperatures to have beach time;
  • no need to take malaria pills;
  • good diving spots
  • if possible: see whales (but this is the least important one)
I was in Sumatra, Sulawesi, Northern Molucs and Papua just last year, so I would want to take it to the south (bali, java, and nusa tengara islands) is this region a good option for our honeymoon? Please give us more details about what places not to miss (for vulcanoes and diving) and what places to avoid (malaria).Or do you know someplace else in the world tha... more »

mid-range lodging mabul

been doing some research and it seems that on mabul accomodations are either at the low end of the spectrum or at the very top, with nothing in between (eg "flashpacker"). mainly i am looking for something that has air conditioning 24 hours...shared bathrooms and everything else being basic is not a problem. is there anything like this available? p.s. i know i haven't given a price range; i really just want to know if there's something between US $25 and $600 pp/pn. thanks!

33 days in Indonesia, am I trying to do too much?

Hello all,

I will be visiting Indonesia in about seven weeks (first week of July) and have enjoyed using this forum as a great resource in my planning. I already have a sixty day visa even though I am only three days over the limit for 30 days. I have planned out a trip but after looking at what everyone else is doing I feel like I may be trying to do too much. I am flying in and out of Bali.

Six days / Bali - a day in Kuta, a few days in Ubud and climbing Gunung Agung with a guide. Overnight bus to Java.

Seven days / Java - Gunung Bromo, Yogyakarta and the two temples near by (can't spell them properly). Fly from Yogyakarta to Makassar

Ten Days / Sulawesi - Makassar to Rantepao, three days in Rantepoa, two days of bus travel to Pantai Bira via Sengkang, two days at Pantai Bira and then back to Makassar. Fly from Makassar to Maumere, Flores.

*Seven days / Flores &... more »

Physical therapist or acupuncture in Bali

Can anyone recommend a good physical therapist/masseuse/acupuncturist in Bali?

I have a nagging knee injury and am looking for someone to do a trigger point massage and possibly acupuncture as well.

Thanks
