3 Month Student Internship in Manila - Apartment on a Budget

Hey everyone,

Similar question about living in Manila.

Preface: I have a summer (3 month) internship in an NGO office in Makati, but unfortunately I'm working on a pretty tight budget. I know I should try to live nearby, but in terms of rent I can't afford much more than $600 a month (which I don't think will cut it there). The office is walking distance from the Buendia MRT, so I'm hoping I can find something near that line so I don't have to worry about taxis (which I've only heard bad things about) or buses. I don't mind a fairly long commute as long as it is somewhat consistent.

My Question: Is $600 doable for MRT access and my own room (don't mind apartment or housemates)? If not, I can go higher but it will put me in the red (to be fair, I'm already in the red for school). If anyone could give me some advice before I suck up paying $800 - $900 it would be much apprecia... more »

2 weeks trip in Aug

Hello everybody!

I am planning a two weeks trip in Indonesia with my girlfriend at the end of august. Our Idea, was to split the time in two half, with the first part of the trip in Java. Here i have the first questions:
1- There are some thing that we absolutely don't want to miss: Borobodur and Prambanan temples, Mount Bromo, and Sukamade turtle beach. What do you think is the minimum amount of days to spend here? Do you think 5 days is enough?
I was trying to minimize the time in Java to save for the second half of the trip.
2- To minimize time and transport, I would like to book a trip with a tour operator for this Javanese part. Do you think is a good idea? Any suggestion of reliable tour operators to avoid scammers?

We want to dedicate the second part of the trip to watch for wildlife in the rainforest , but also relaxing on a beach and snorkeling (we are not divers, so... more »

North Sulawesi - Things To Do

Hi Everyone,

Planning a trip to North Sulawesi. Mainly interested in natural and cultural things. So far found:

  • diving
  • jungle tours

Planning to stay on Bunaken and then go for a tour to Tangkoko. Could you please share your experiences from the Bunaken: where to stay, how is the beach etc; and if there are any other activities in North Sulawesi?

Thanks a lot.
Taras

Philippines in july/august

I want to go to asia for about 2 months in July/August and have been thinking about the Philippines simply because I haven't been there yet.

The only problem is of course the rainy season but I've been looking into it and heard some contradicting stories. The general consensus seems to be "no, don't go in July/August" but when I looked more closely at the country's weather behavior I saw that the Philippines has 4 different climates; some of which rather nice during this time of year.

Is there anyone here with some experience on the matter? do you think it's a good idea to go during this time or would i be better off going to more southern country's such as malaysia or indonesia.

any recommendations for places to visit in the Philippines during this time of year would be greatly appreciated as well :) I'm looking for something low budget with good diving.

Cheers! more »

Insurgency in Sabah

Hello,

I recently learned that there is political trouble in Sabah, resulting and US State deptt travel warnings, danger of kidnappings or guerrilla activity. Can anyone who has been there in the last three months confirm this and does this mean that Northeast Sabah is really off limits to tourists?

Thank you,

Chaco

Flores

Hi Guys,

I have some doubts about how I may organize my 3 weeks tour in Indonesia.

First of all I will land to Yogia where I spend 3 days and then I don't know if it would be better fly to Flores and then come back to Jakarta via Lombok, Gili and Lombok or exclude Flores from the itinerary.

Do you know how I can reach Flores from Yogia? are there any flights? I've tried to search with Garuda but I don't find any flights.

What do you suggest me?

thanks!

Niah Caves or Gunung Mulu?

I will be in Borneo in second half of September 2013
Both the Niah Caves and Gunung Mulu NP seem to be awesome places to visit. But, apparently, if you're going to Gunung Mulu NP, going to Niah might not be worth the effort. Any recommendations?
For Gunung Mulu, is your stay (entrance tickets, accommodation, guides, etc...) to be booked ahead?
Thanks for your advice

Bali - tours, transportation

My wife and I plan to go to Bali for 2 weeks- either October or December.
Our base should mainly be in Ubud with day tours out to the Island for example Batur/Bratan, Tenganan, Tanah Lot, Gitgit Waterfall, Munduk. Other Places we should not miss ?
Besides basing in Ubud we think of 3-4 nights in Sanur or Lovina.for the Beach. Any preferences to these 2 Places ?

Here comes main question:
Transportation and tours around the Island. What is the best solution - Links to tour agencies ?

Thanks in advance

NTT Transport questions

HI,

I'll be in NTT for my second visit (realy LOVED the place) from Aug 12th to Sep 10th, flying in and out of Denpasar.

Most important is revisiting Lamalera and get to explore Sumba.

Plans are:

After a night in Kuta flight to Maumere
Get to Larantuka
Get to Lewoleba, maybe rent a scooter and explore for a day or two.
Get to Lamalera, stay there until I crave for civilisation.
Back to Lewoleba
Get to Sumba somehow
Back to Bali and home :(

Now the Questions:

Kuta to Lewoleba:
Probably not possible to do in one day.
Should I try to get an early flight, press on to Larantuka the same day, spend the night there to get a morning feary?
Or is it safe to slep in Maumere (more/better options?) and catch a morning boat anyway?
How are the feary timetables?
Is Adonara worth it to break the trip for a day or two?

Lewoleba to Sumba:
So many possible ways to go... more »
