Asia - South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula

I'm currently in Bali and would love to go to the Gilli Islands. After speaking to people re rough sea on the fast boats and seeing the price, if I go I would go via slow boat (local ferry) as I get very seasick. I understand this will take 8 hours from Padangbai. What I want to ask is if any of you have travelled this way to the Gilli's? Is the journey rough on the slow boat? And how big is the boat? I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's done this before.
Thank you so much
I just finished a six-week round trip through west West Kalimantan (KalBar) and thought I shared some of my impressions and information about this less travelled part of Kalimantan. I didn’t see any other tourist or backpacker for six weeks, the only other Westerner I met was a Catholic priest in Sintang. I started my trip in Kuching/Sarawak, crossed the land border between Malaysia and Indonesia at Entikong and took a local bus to Singkawang, a coastal town north of Pontianak. The details, tested links to Google maps and specific prices (correct at the time of writing) for transport, accommodation, beer and food in my online travel notes at:
From Singkawang I worked my way up north into less charted territory... more »

Hi fellow travelers!
I will be in SE Asia this winter. I am flying into Thailand but expect to be traveling in Indonesia. I am thinking of booking my return flight home out of Jakarta instead of heading all the way back to Bangkok.
I am wondering if it is safe to fly in and out of Jakarta. It appears to be cheaper than DPS, but would gladly spend extra for safety... Or is there another airport i am unaware of that my be better for me. I will be flying back to the states.
Thank You for any info
Safe travels my friends!
I'm not sure if my friend is able to go SE Asia with me anymore in April next year, so I was just posting to ask...
Have you been backpacking solo?
Have you gone scuba diving, elephant trekking, relaxing on beaches, etc... whilst travelling on your own? To me, this feels... wrong. I couldn't imagine doing these fun activities on my own? It seems weird!
I know people say you meet people out there, but sometimes you don't!
So I was just wanting to know, how did you get on whilst travelling on your own? Did you still do the activities you wanted to do on your own? Was it odd/weird?
Last time I was in the RP (about 2 yrs ago) I seem to remember some RP banks charged for withdrawing cash but I found one that didn't. It's a UK card if that is a factor.
Any brief update would be welcome.
We'll be landing in Manila 11th of January at 11.30 am and we'd like to take a night bus to Banaue.
I have a few questions about that:
- is it better to take an Ohayami bus (450 pesos and no toilet) or a Florida bus (I think double price but with toilet and with reclining seats)? Are both companies reliable?
- where do you put your big backpack when you take a night bus? Do you keep it with you somewhere under the seat or do you put it in the bus luggage compartment? Is it safe tu put it in the compartment? I've recently read a message from a French tourist whose luggage was stolen on the Ohayami bus
- is the terminal for Florida buses the same as the terminal for Ohayami buses? How to get there from the airport?
- is it possible to buy tickets the same day at about 13.00 pm when we get there from the airport?
- in case we buy our tickets what can we do ...
we are a young couple from Germany and we are looking for a group that we can maybe join in order to climb Mount Rinjani on Lombok because we heard that it is much cheaper if you are a bigger group.
We have time for the next two weeks to do the climb.
Thank you very much for each reply!

Hey, there's a cool book out by Paul Greenway.
He wrote the Lonely Planet book on Bali and Lombok.
This book is fiction though and it's very tongue-in-cheek.
It's called Bali & Oates.
It takes the mickey out of politicians, diplomats and intelligence agencies.
Lots of really funny names and he also takes you to some really nice parts of Bali as he knows the country so well.
The action centres around a female character who is Consul General to Bali.
She's been advised there has been a terrorist threat against the Australian Prime Minister for his visit to Bali next month.
Is the threat real?
Who knows what and how much? No one knows, because no one will share their information, even though they're all supposed to be working together to protect the Australian PM.
It takes a while to read but is perfect for a relaxing and entertaining holiday read down by the beach...with ... more »
we (one american, one malaysian) are going to vietnam from kuala lumpur in a couple weeks. i want to confirm that the malaysian doesn't need any type of visa before landing at saigon airport?
and for the american, can you tell me: how much does the visa at the embassy cost, will they accept malaysian ringgit or only u.s. dollars? and how long does it take to get? our trip is for just over 1 week. 10 days, to be exact. thanks!
Hey..just arrived Dec 6th in Manila from Hanoi, my return to Singapore from Cebu is Jan 20th. Is it too cold to go North? Was thinking of taking the overnight bus to Banaue then to Sagada but don't want to freeze my ass off in the mountains. Sunny days and chilly nights are OK...but don't have a lot of warm clothes. If it is too cold any other suggestions? I want to see local villages and take some photo's. Not a trek freak but some nice day trips would be great.
Will post more dumb questions later about the islands in the south, but any help with Luzon would be greatly appreciated.
My girlfriend and I will be travelling the Philippines for a month and a half next march and I've done a lot of research on blogs and on this forum to elaborate an approximate itinerary.
I'd love to have the opinion of knowledgeable people on it. :)
It's not a strict plan, we like to extend our stay in a city we really like or skip a place if time is lacking, but I'd like to know if we should spend less/more days in some areas, or avoid/add some things altogether. Thanks!

Anyone knows if there are currently other bungalow operations available besides Prince john Dive resort ? Harmony ?Any feedback/contacts regarding others appreciated....
First of all: I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section. I do understand, many people have similar questions and I'm reading around quite a bit, but still can't form a clear opinion. So if anyone can provide some advice, it is highly appreciated.
Anyway, my question itself is rather simple:
I have around 10 weeks in SEA - from mid january to end of march.
Currently I'm in southern China, and my return flight will be from Guanzhou, otherwise there's nothing set in stone.
My question is basically, where to go during the time. I'm a guy, mid 20's, I've travelled china for a while, but none of the other countries. I'm mosty interested in landscape, culture (i.e. historic buildings) but not so much in major cities and excessive drinking - although a nice beach and couple pints won't hurt.
My basic question is in which general direction to head. My only "requireme... more »
