I will be spending 60 days (hopefully) in Indonesia from mid-January to mid-March. I'd love to get involved in some conservation work whilst out there. I have my Open Water PADI certificate and plan to do lots of diving around Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi; obviously, to integrate these plans with an opportunity to volunteer for a worthy project would be ideal.
As I want to see a lot of Indo in my two months, I don't really want to commit to more than a week's worth of my time, which I realise may limit my options. I've got some previous experience with the RSPB and NT in the UK and with the DOC in New Zealand.
Any pointers or handy contacts would be much appreciated,
p.s. - I'm landing in Denpasar, Bali - anybody know the nearest place I can get my 30 days extended to 60?!
I will shortly be heading off for a trip across Java, to Flores and W Timor, then possibly up to the Spice Islands.
I haven't been on the road for a few years and it seems times have changed a bit with regard to traveller's cheques.
I spent hours yesterday in town (NZ) touring banks and travel centres making equiries. In most cases, they looked at me as if I had just arrived from Mars when I asked for these. They all claim that traveller's cheques are no longer used world wide. Appartently they are 'too risky'. Call me old fashioned, but they always worked well for me over the years. All of a sudden, I am feeling very old!
I have called just about ever Travelex and Amex number I can find but still no closer to an answer - yet both website say they still issue them.
My usual routine well I travel is to use my normal bank cards in cities/developed areas, c... more »
I would like to learn Bahasa Indonesia at a language school on Bali. I don't know if it's even possible but any suggestions would be a help. Thanks :)
I am looking for a decent place to stay in kuta and meet fellow (solo)backpackers like myself. What are my options?
I am from UK currently living in Australia saving for a 5/6 month stay in Bali.
I will prob base myself somewhere in Kuta and then travel around nearby areas surfing.
How much in total will I need per month for the following in AUS$;
2) Scooter hire
5) Maybe one night out a week
I have been told $700 per month should do the job... Does this sound like too much or too little? I am happy to live very cheap as most my time will be surfing. Also does this get much cheaper in areas such as Lombok and Sumartra?
Any help would be great. Thanks
Hi, let me know what I can expect if I make a deal with a private driver, if I arrange for a car and driver. How much approximately they can realisticaly ask for 1 km?
I am heading to Indo on Sunday Sept 2, 2012 - Solo traveler. I definitely need to visit Rinca to see the wild komodo dragons and the sailing trips i keep hearing about seem great.
What are my options in terms of tours? What do you recommend? Do they have electricity on board the boats so that I can charge my camera battery?
Would it be strange for me to be a solo traveler onboard these boats, that is... is it a "couples" type of trip?
i'm planning a sixmonth long trip trough South-East-Asia (the countries include: Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodja, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia). And i couldn't really find an estimated price of getting around in indonesia.
the plan is to visit every big island of the peninsula and to do some islandhopping and we're going as low-budget as possible.
So i was wondering if anybody has some experience travelling through Indonesia and could advise on wether to take flights or boats and when to book these in advance (or just book them right there on the spot), etcetera, etcetera
I'm quite new with this, so sorry if there were already posts about this..
Thanks in advance!!
Thank you in advance, touli
I did not realize how cheap flying was in Indonesia. This makes me excited to be able to fit more into my itinerary (relaxing on beaches, short travel times, soaking in local culture, staying in one place an extra day or two) but also regret perhaps missing seeing things on the bus and train rides (enjoying the ride not the destination, feeling the landscape, getting a grasps of the country as a whole). Can anyone weigh in on this dilemma.?
I have a one way flight to India and kinda seeing which way the wind takes me up until I get to December where I meet my friend, she is on a 5 week long timescale, therfore things have to be a bit more structured.
Basically we would like to be in Bali backpacker area (nice restaurants, beaches nightlife for maybe 2 weeks this would include Lombok. Then we would like to get to the Thai islands koh toa, we will make our way to koh phanghan for new year (I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but we've been before and enjoyed it).
Would we best going to Singapore or kular lumper to get to Thailand ? Which airport would be the easiest to fly into?
I wouldn't mind doing a quick flying visit into both Singapore and kular lumpar but I'm just getting confused on which way to do things also any advice on the area to stay in Bali would be great

Hey all, I humbly ask for sagacious advice from the more well-travelled in this area:
I'm a 26 y/o guy travelling solo west -> east from Bali to Flores and back in 33 days from mid-October. I've already been to Bali & don't plan on hanging around in Kuta, so my rough plan (minus all the sightseeing and 'stuff') is to:
- Arrive in Bali, climb Mt Agung
- Catch a ferry to Lembar on Lombok, climb Mt Rinjani (3 days), then catch a bus to Labuhan(?)
- Ferry to Sumbawa, bus overland and hike into Mt Tambora (4-6 days), then bus to Sape(?)
- Ferry to Flores
- Slow boat back to Lombok via Komodo/Rinca
- Relax on Gili Islands for a bit
Does my itinerary and plan of overland/ferry east, then slow boat back west sound feasible in just over a month, and on a budget of roughly 20M IDR (I plan on basic accommodation)? Or should I consider an airborne inter-island leg instead of sea/lan... more »
I will be staying at Manggis, Bali, and wanted to know if there is a good surfspot around or do I have to ride all the way south. Is there any surfshop where I can buy a good surfboard (doesn t matter if it is indonesian board, mbrazilian american or australian, just wanna buy a good surfboard that won t snap in the first wave) around manggis or do I have to go to Kuta? Domyou guys and gals know what time the kuta surfshops close?
I am new to this and have only just started my travelling adventure. Currently staying in Padang Bai and travelling to Lombok on saturday. Would appreciate any insight into best ferrires to get (as there are so many), how much I should pay for cheap ferry- time is not an issue and how much to expect to travel from lembar to Kuta Lombok?
Hi all and thank you for the helpful posts regarding Sumatra vs Bali.
We have now arranged what we are going to do and i am just after some clarification on a couple of travel points on the ground.
We're flying into Yogya and staying for a few days before heading to Bromo.
1) We can leave from Yogya or Solo, Solo preferred, and ideally would take an overnight train to Probolinggo (or Malang) before heading up to Cemoro Lawang, then we could spend the day there and get up for sunset before moving on - is this possible? If not then we'll do a train during the day but on a short trip we'd like to avoid travelling for what would be almost an entire day, however much fun the local train would be.
2) How would we get to see Ijen Plateau from Cemoro Lawang? Would we have to bite the bullet and arrange a driver through whichever hotel we stay at or is there local transport that we... more »
