South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula FAQ

Inside this thread you'll find a collection of links to TT threads and websites about attractions, activities, travel practicalities and news about Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, & Singapore.

Before you get reading (and posting), here's some advice from the TT team to help you find the info you need:

1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask the same questions. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2.

2. Be specific. How much do you have to spend? How long is your trip? What are your interests (i.e. local culture and art, or sport, or food and drink, or none of the above). The details will help the community tailor your advice and answers.

3. Please use the right branch. This branch is intended for travel questions and resources... more »

Whose Travelled Air Asia X....?

I have just returned from a flight on Air Asia X Kuala Lumpur-Gold Coast. I also flew them Melbourne- KL on the way over. It's a Low Cost Carrier so you pay for everything from food, to drinks, entertainment etc. That's all good I have no problems with that. The seating is quite narrow but beware the seats do not recline. They sort of slide forward a little where you sit - strange.? Anyway, the food was very average and servings quite small. If you pre-book online you can get a small discount. My flight coming home was the "flight from hell". With Low Cost Carriers come cheap price's. With cheap prices come some "Low Cost Travelers". Now I am only 28 and not some old prude who complains about every little thing that ticks me off and yes I myself was flying with them and was attracted by the price which was very competitive. My flight had 4 young guys and a girl around 19-20yrs old. It... more »

Harry's coming....

Oh yes.

Harry has finally been offered a contract in Singapore, so look out Sillyporeans! Harry is on the way. (He hopes. got to raise the airfare yet).

The job is with "I can read" (website).

I'll be helping littlies to learn to read, or helping readers to be able to read better.

As some of you know, Mrs Mudd is Sillyporean, and I have been to Singapore over a dozen times since 1979.

Jeez, I have seen some changes since then.

I haven't been back for about 7 or 8 years now, so I'll bet there are more changes in store for me.

(not looking forward to Singapore prices for beer, though)

hey, where is that microbrewery that sells cheap booze of an afternoon? more »

Do I have to go through it and make sure there's no porn on there?
Will they actually go through it?

Note I'm not actually staying in Singapore

Perhentian during December??

I plan on travelling in Malaysia in late December and really want to go to the Perhentians as I have heard that they are beautiful. However I am under the impression that this is in the middle of the monsoon season. I was recently speaking to someone who said that during the monsoon season it basically buckets down for an hour or two at around 2 in the afternoon, but that apart from that it is beautiful sunshine the rest of the day, which sounds fine to me.

Does anyone know if this is true? Does anyone know what the weather is like during late December? Will I be indoors constantly or will there be some sunshine?

Cheers,

Jake

Ko Samui or Bali??

Hi All,
I am going to be in Cambodia until the 6th of December and have until the 16th to do something fun. I would like to go to an island and the top two are Bali and Ko Samui. Right now, Bali's weather looks nicer but it is also more expensive since I ultimately need to end up in Bangkok on the 13th or so. I have gotten a lot of mixed opinions on Bali and want to know if it is worth it to spend the extra money to go to instead of Ko Samui. Also, a recommendation on what area to stay in Bali would be awesome, if its worth the trip. I am young but don't really need a big party, I basically want a beautiful beach where I can relax and maybe go on a few hikes or go swimming...be semi adventurous but also lying on the beach with a Mai Tai and maybe a massage...what do you guys think?
I am also open to other suggestions, thanks!!!
Jenn
