Inside this thread you'll find a collection of links to TT threads and websites about attractions, activities, travel practicalities and news about Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, & Singapore.
Before you get reading (and posting), here's some advice from the TT team to help you find the info you need:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask the same questions. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2.
2. Be specific. How much do you have to spend? How long is your trip? What are your interests (i.e. local culture and art, or sport, or food and drink, or none of the above). The details will help the community tailor your advice and answers.
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is intended for travel questions and resources...

Hi,
I'm interested in learning some basics of Malaysian cuisine while I'm in Borneo. Has anybody ever had a cooking course (e.g. 1 afternoon or 1 day)? If so how was it?
Also, is it easy to find such workshops, in Kuching preferably, or in KK? Any good address to recommend?
Thanks!

Anyone planning a trip around those dates?

A friend and I are travelling aroung SE Asia for 3.5-4 months, and our (very rough) itinerary so far is:
7 days - Hong Kong
10 days - Laos (Vientiane & Luang Prabang)
28 days - Vietnam (Hanoi, Hue, Nha Trang, Saigon)
14 days - Cambodia (Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Siem Reap)
30 days - Malaysia (KL, Langkawi, Penang, Perihentians, Sabah)
Which leaves approximately 2-4 weeks to explore another country, and we've pretty much decided on Indonesia. We'd probably fly from KL and back into Malaysia at the end(we have to finish our trip in Malaysia).
So my question to those who have already been to Indonesia--- what do you think would be the best way to spend our time in this country? What we're really looking for is a decent mix of culture/beaches/scenery- so basically a good overview of this country! A little research suggests that Java might be a good bet (good flights, Borobud...

Hello!
In summer 2010 we will travel for six weeks for the first time to Indonesia:
does anyone have experience in getting around by plane (of course - you have many islands) but buses and other public transport as well.
At the moment I think we will fly to Denpasar/Bali first (alternatively Jakarta - but if possible I want avoid the town at this trip)to connect by plane to
BORNEO. We like to spend some three weeks there following our special interests in fotographie, nature, flora, fauna and landscape (e. g. i'm ecologist ).
So I think about one flight to the island of Borneo, three weeks there on our way by public transport on land and then leaving the island.
After that we want to go back to Bali for let's say two further weeks enjoying the same interests and maybe the last week for Lombok, Sulawesi or Komdodo.
I would thank you for tipps about cheap and reliable ai...

Hi everyone,
I've been staying in Banda Aceh these past few months and things are pretty expensive here. I've got 2 days of doing nothing in Medan at the end of this trip and was hoping to fill it up with shopping (already put 2 days aside for Bukit Lewang).
I'm mostly interested in souvenirs, materials (love sewing/crafts), arts and crafts and clothes. Would love to buy shoes too but am a grand old size 5 womens - and Asia's the only place I'm considered to have big feet :)
Any advice would be appreciated. I'm not adverse to bargaining, I'm fluent in Indonesian though very obviously a Westerner, and would really rather avoid massive malls,
Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
I'm planning to fly over to Trieste to meet up with my family in September via KL as this is the cheapest first stopover I could find and comfortable with given I have flown with them before.
My question is more related to how to get from KL to Trieste in the shortest possible time at the cheapest price possible. I know, big ask.
I've done some research and found KL to London Stansted, Stansted to Trieste..but travelling by myself I'm not so keen staying over night in London, and if possible I want to avoid travelling through Rome.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance and happy travels.

hi everyone
we've decided to fly to Denpasar mid March and want to travel overland up to Jakarta (obviously also utilising ferry!)... the issue is that we need to be back in Bali for several bookings from mid April to mid May which means that we'll have to do a visa run to Singapore (prob).
So. Hoping I can run this by you guys and if you could let me know if i'm way off the mark/on the right track, i'd be forever grateful.
the plan:
Fly to Bali - enter on 30 day tourist visa - stay a couple of days
start trek to Jakarta, taking the well beaten track from Gunung Bromo-Surabaya-Solo-Yogyakarta-Pangandaran-Bandung-Bogor-Jakarta
fly Jakarta to Singapore
stay Singapore for a couple of days then fly to Denpasar and re-enter Bali on a new 30 day tourist visa...
do you think it's doable? to add to the mix, we're travelling with my 3 year old son, so will expect dela...

Hey Guys/Gals,
Haven't done this before and I am contemplating doing it. Let's say my International flight into Changi arrives @6am and I wish to catch a 8.45am flight with Tiger.
Is this doable or will I be pushing it to collect my bags and to then check-in at Tiger for the flight to Manila. I understand Tiger closes the check-in strictly at 45-minutes to flight time.
Also is it in the same location, like in T2. I think my flight from Melbourne will usually lands in T3. And I normally catch the shuttle to go to T2.
I guess all this to save the cost of connection to Manila or a long layover like I had last time when I did the MEL-SIN-MNL on singapore only.
Your experience or advice very much welcomed if you have done this.

Planning on trekking from Bukit Langwa, Sumatra, Indonesia anytime soon? Check this out:
Last Thursday, there were 4 of us trekking through the jungle by this village. We'd left the village about 9.50 a.m. and had stopped for lunch about 12.30 to 1 p.m. We were just trekking. We weren't singing, talking loudly, drinking, eating, holding food, showing our teeth, or anything that could be construed as provoking or luring any animals. At about 1.50 p.m., the 4 of us were scrambling up a reasonably short and slight incline when the guide shouted "orangutan, go back".
At this point, I should write that the order of us were firstly, the guide, secondly a German girl (G1 for short), a second German girl (G2 for short) and myself. As I'm not sure what the German girls want at this point, I think it's better if I withhold their names.
Upon hearing the guide, we all proceeded qui...

We will be traveling to Indonesia sometime June/July for 2 weeks. We will be bringing our 2 1/2 year old son. This will not be our first time traveling with him, we did Peru and Turkey already, but our first time in Indonesia.
We are looking for recommendations for places that we should not miss with him in tow.
Things we like:

Now that I've done more research about Indonesia I think I've come up with two possibilities for my trip to Indonesia. Like I've said in an earlier post I'm 22 from The U.SofA. This will be my first trip outside of the U.S. I want my trip to last around 3 months and my budget is 10,000United States Dollars. And my interests are in Indonesian Culture. The two possible trips are:
Trip 1
1 month in Borneo
2 weeks in Bali
3 weeks in Java
1.5 months in southern Sumatra
Trip 2
1.5 months in Sulawesi
2 weeks in Bali
2 weeks in Malaysian Borneo
1 month in Indonesian Borneo
Out of these 2 trips which one do you think would be better for a first time traveler and a first time indonesia visit? Thank You for your help
