Inside this thread you'll find a collection of links to TT threads and websites about attractions, activities, travel practicalities and news about Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, & Singapore.
Before you get reading (and posting), here's some advice from the TT team to help you find the info you need:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask the same questions. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2.
2. Be specific. How much do you have to spend? How long is your trip? What are your interests (i.e. local culture and art, or sport, or food and drink, or none of the above). The details will help the community tailor your advice and answers.
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is intended for travel questions and resources...

We are flying to Cebu next month for another 5-week trip to the Philippines, and I thought I'd ask the experts on this board for ideas of places that could meet our requirements.
We are travelling with two very young children, so we are not going to be on the move all the time, and are mostly looking for chilled-out places to base ourselves for a week or two at a time. Two years ago, on a similar trip with our first-born, we spent time in Bohol, Negros, Camiguin and Bantayan and had a great time. We could always go back to the same places, but we thought we might want to try other Visaya islands this time, provided we can find suitable accommodation.
We travel budget and eat in local eateries, but with the two little ones we can't go really for the most basic beach shacks any more. For those of you that know these places, Nuts Huts on Bohol or Kookoo's Nest on Negros worked per...

Hey,
i will be arriving at Jakarta airport at 9pm. My onward flight to Surabaya is at 8am next morning.
I don't want to stay in airport hotel because of costs. Do you have recommendations what to do over night at Jakarta airport?
Is there a lounge available which can be used by anyone without frequent flyer status for a fee?
Do you have other recommendations?
Kind regards,
Sebastian

Has anyone used the new Lonely Planet Philippines that came out earlier this year?
The previous edition (2 editions?) received extremely poor reviews - but I did note that the new one has a new coordinating author. Sometimes this can make a huge difference.
If opinion of the new LP is poor, does anyone know if Jens Peters' Philippines Travel Guide is available in Manila or Bangkok, and, if it is, where to find it?
I'm assuming I won't be able to procure a copy of the Rough Guide, since they generally have poor distribution in Asia.

Hi All,
I'm looking at a tight connecting flight through Denpasar - would be arriving at 12.40pm on Virgin and then have an Air Asia flight at 2pm. I'd web check in beforehand and with the counter closing 45 minutes before departure, I'd have about 35 minutes to get my bag and get to the counter for bag drop.
I presume all international flights in and out of Denpasar leave from the same terminal? No need to go in and out of the terminal? Am I cutting it too fine?

Hello there, I intend to book a flight out of Sydney through the Jetstar website to Bali on the next Sunday afternoon, 29 November. All I am concerned about is, if that airline will not let me board without a return ticket back to Sydney, but my plan is not to fly out from Indo, but going overland across the boarder to East-Timor, and then, from there getting on a plane to Darwin.
I will be carrying an East Timorese passport also, and have arrangements for my plane ticket to be bought in Malang, flying to Kupang from Surabaya.
Will all that be enough for me, only to book a one-way e-ticket to Bali, plus having the Surabaya- Kupang ticket, by check-in with Jetstar airline here in Sydney?
Thanks very much, for any response!

Hi all,
I'm in a bit of a pickle here. We have just arrived in Medan today (Sunday, 22/11/09) and intended to take the ferry over to Penang tomorrow (23/11/09). Our visa ends tomorrow as well. Yes, yes, I know, why so tight...but cycling doesn't always work out as planned. Anyhow, so I tried to get a ticket today at the Perdana Express office and they are closed. So I go into the travel agent next door and he tells me there are no ferries until 1st December.
I tried a few travel agents afterward that and none of them mentioned this, but neither could they give me a ticket as it's Sunday and the Perdana office is closed.
Now, we could fly to KL tomorrow evening 9 PM - but with the bicycles, it always turns out to be expensive, because of the extra luggage. Can anyone here in Medan or over in Georgetown confirm whether there IS or indeed IS NOT a boat going to Penang from Medan...

I'm looking to travel from Penang to Phuket or Krabi early February 2.
I've checked airasia but they don't seem to offer direct flights to either destination. Are there any other airlines that offer direct flights? Is it possible to travel by boat or train? How long would a boat/train take and how much would they cost?
Thanks for your help.

Hi all,
I'll be in Palawan from the 24th of Dec to the 3rd of Jan. Flying into Coron and out of PP. I will skip El Nido to save time I guess, but I will most likely have to take the land route between Coron and PP. Is there a way to get to Sabang and the UG river if coming from the north or will I have to go all the way to PP and then back track?
Can you recommend anywhere really cheap to stay in Coron, Sabang and PP. I don't really care about amenities or beachfront view. My main goal is to spend my money diving so if anyone can recommend a particular dive company or some of the best dive sites in Coron that would be great!
What is the ferry schedule between Coron and El Nido?
Thanks

I am traveling with a friend to Malaysia for 9 days during Xmas. My question is whether I should stay on peninsular Malaysia or if I have time/worth it to go to Borneo as well (I know it's "worth it", but time wise, dive sites...). I am looking for some diving as well, which factors in greatly. It seems some places close down during that time of year?!? Like Palau Perhentian on the mainland, and Tun Sakaran in Borneo?
So, suggestions for a good dive site during Xmas, and if there are quality dive places available on the peninsula, I know there is enough to keep us busy for 9 days, but should I still make the effort to go to Borneo as well? Ultimately, if I can dive somewhere spectacular without flying to Borneo, should I just spend my time on the peninsula...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question, but there is no section about general flight questions on the forum!
My basic question is: does anybody know if Malaysian Airlines and Air China have an interlining agreement to check bags across connecting flights? I'm flying from Melbourne to Beijing soon, and booked my tickets on Expedia. The best deal it gave me was Melbourne to KL with Malaysian Airlines, and KL to Beijing with Air China. If all flights are on time then I will have 3.5 hours between my flights at KL. I'm really hoping I won't have to collect my baggage, because this will require me to exit customs in KL right? Or is there a way to check it in with Air China without leaving customs?
Thanks very much!

Hi All
We arrive in Manilla Dec 10. We are still trying to figure out where to go first. We can stay in the Philippines for up to 4 months so are not worried about time. Previously, in Thailand (please allow me to compare) we have spent 3-4 weeks each in Koh Chang & Hua Hin and 10 days each in Samui & Koh Phangan & Koh Tao among others. Those places worked for us because it was not too quiet and not too busy either. In each place there was a town to walk thru and restaurants, shops, bars etc to visit. We do not want to feel that we are stuck in our resort wherever we are. We have looked at several places in the Philippines including Dumaguete/Dauin, Bohol/Panglao, Cebu/Moalboal, Boracay, and for later, north to Banaue and Baguio etc. Finally we looked at Palawan, PP & Nido. Those 2 are the toughest because we would like to see both but don't want to do 8-10 hours by van/boat betwe...

hi, we're leaving for the philippines for 6 weeks, on dec 11, which is right around the corner, but am still unsure of our itinerary. We will be starting off in Manila and heading straight to the rice terraces and the surfing in san juan, and then we are planning on spending the rest island hopping in the visayas ans surfing, but what about Palawan, I feel we are missing something if we don't go. Any suggestions.....
