South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula FAQ

Inside this thread you'll find a collection of links to TT threads and websites about attractions, activities, travel practicalities and news about Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, & Singapore.

Before you get reading (and posting), here's some advice from the TT team to help you find the info you need:

1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask the same questions. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2.

2. Be specific. How much do you have to spend? How long is your trip? What are your interests (i.e. local culture and art, or sport, or food and drink, or none of the above). The details will help the community tailor your advice and answers.

3. Please use the right branch. This branch is intended for travel questions and resources... more »

How safe is election time 2010?

All,

Reading the recent news coverage of the violence in Mindanao, I notice a comment that said that election time is normally very violent. Does anyone know whether this is true? Is it a safe time to travel to Visayas/ Luzon?

We had no intentions of going to Mindanao but were concerned that violence may spread nationwide. Any advice would be greatly received.

Many thanks

Maluku Islands

Hi everyone!
I will make a trip to Indonesia with my family in February 2010 for about 5 weeks (2 adults and 2 kids, 9 and 10 years of age). We plan to take the train on Java, by boat to Bali and after that, flying to Ambon on the maluku islands.
What are the best places to be and what do we have to think about we we are there?
Is it that nice or are there better places? Are 2 weeks enough? Please give me some response and idea's, thank for helping.
We have done some traveling with the family, twice to Thailand and LK, Malaysia but this trip must be more interesting..
/Cas

renting a bike (not a motorbike!)

How easy it is to rent a bike in the Philippines? I very much enjoyed doing this everywhere in India (yeah, I know the wonderful old Indian bikes will not be available!)

**Attn TT Doctors/Labtechs** Ross River Virus test in Bali?

Hi there, my partner and I have both recently come down with something that is following Ross River Fever to a T. We have been through Borneo/Timor/Flores over the past few months and on arrival into Bali started getting sick. I was hospitalized at BIMC while I was at the worst part of the fever etc and have just been discharged. The hospital was completely stumped to what we have (the standards have been ruled out) they also have informed me Ross River cannot be tested for in Bali...

Does anyone know where the closest lab is that CAN test for RRV? would we have luck in Jakarta or are we going to have to look at Sing/Auz?
How easy is it to have samples flown to Sing/Auz to have testing done?

Thanks very much for the input!

Sending post (pictures) to lamalera, east nusa tenggara

I hope someone can help me on this one!

Last August I was in Lamalera on Lembar, a small island east of Flores, where I had a great time going out fishing with some guys. I promised them to send some copies of a group picture we had someone take of us, getting some nun to write down the name and adress of one of these guys.
In the course of my furter travels I lost this piece of paper which had quite a long adress on it, including district and such. Now I am sure that if I address the envelope to 'captain Alfred', the guys will get the envelope, as long as it gets to the right island. So can anyone help me with how to address it properly?
Also I was thinking I might enclose a enveloppe with my adress on it for an answer, though I guess I should somehow pay for the return fare too, but with no indonesian poststamps or rupees, this might be difficult.. any suggestions?

thanks! more »

Travel partner for Malaysia

I have plans to visit Malaysia (Melaka, Penang, Cameron Highlands, Langkawi, KL and the Taman Negara trek) next year around May.

I like beautiful scenery like beaches but not to lounge on them. Local markets, culture and food, historical sites, national parks and such are my interests. I am an Asian female in my 40's and would like to hear from a like-minded female to plan the trip.

information hotels Indonesia

Hello all,

A friend and I are traveling together for the first time to Indonesia and are very excited about trip. We have been reading lots of posts but would like you with some more information about places to stay in some places we are going and things we have to do.

First we will be arriving in Jakarta past midnight and need to have our hostel ready. Any suggestions for a good hostel, kind of in a central area, budget to spend a couple of days before we start moving around? How easy and expensive is to get to the hotel from the airport at this time of the night?
We want to spend New year's in Bali but have found some hostels that are already booked there.Any suggestioms for places to stay there too and is it necessary to book in advance at this time of the year?
Any information you can give us will be appreciated

Happy holidays

WHat to bring back home ?

Hey all,

Going to the Philippines soon. I would like to bring something of a taste from there to 2 filippino friends that have left home long ago. What would be a nice reminder of home to bring as a gift ? Preferably something light or not big in size.

Thanx in advance,

O.

If you're ever stuck in Dumai, Sumatra

Just back from Sumatra and I promised to write about this guy so here goes...

Mr Muchsin (pronounced muck-sin, not 'much sin') runs a private English school in Dumai that he basically built from scratch. If he was living in a developed part of the world, he'd probably own a chain of schools by now, but Sumatra being what it is, he could really use a teaching assistant from an English speaking country. Undeterred by bad luck (it's unlikely he will ever be sent anybody) he has set up a really innovative scheme - he 'recruits' foreign tourists as they arrive at the ferry terminal or bus station and invites them to come and teach at his school in exchange for board and lodging. To be honest, this is probably the most interesting thing to see in Dumai as you really get to see life in a local neighborhood and meet many local people (and some very cute children of course).

His address... more »

Living in Palawan

I'm going to Palawan in late Jan/10 and plan to live there for 4 or 5 months. I have been there before and enjoyed it. Have any of you actually lived in the Palawan or stayed for a long time? I'm interested to know what accommodation options there are and places to buy fresh produce etc. One thing I didn't like was having to eat a lot of packaged food as most of the shops we found don't offer items we like including fresh milk or bread etc. I would like to find a place to live around Puerto or near a beach for around $5000 pesos a week that me and my girlfriend can live in for a few months.

Any ideas and feedback would be great!

Merpati Airlines

Has anyone been on Merpati Airlines recently? I see that they have an online booking site which is pretty impressive considering the national airline, Garuda, doesn't even have one. My questions are;

1. Has anyone tried the online booking site and does it actually work? (I know many third world airlines only have online booking site for show.)

2. I've done a search for Merpati airlines and they seem to crash a lot, especially recently. Has anyone been on Merpati and survived to tell the tale? Would appreciate some feedback on their service standards if you have survived a Merpati flight.

3. Their airfares are a bargain and much cheaper than a lot of their competitors and they seem to do flights from the places where I am going which is always a bonus. Eg, Bandung to Surabaya (about 330K Rp) and then on to Mataram (for about 117K Rp). That's around... more »
