Iquitos to Cuzco...1 or 2 days

Like most trips, I do not have endless days to play. Need to fly from Iquitos to Cusco through Lima in September. Question is... is it smart to do both legs in same day or fly to Lima and next day take early flight to Cusco. Variables here are flight delays, weather. This is my first time in area and have heard am flights to Cusco are more dependable. Would prefer to take same day flights to maximize time near Mchu Picchu area.

Thanks.

jungle flights in ecuador

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a flight to the Ecuadorian jungle without booking a lodge? Who flies the planes for the lodges? Are they regular flights or do the planes belong to/are chartered by the lodge?

Thanks a million.

Providencia or Los Roques for scuba diving and laid back chilling?

Hi - I'm female, 34 and will be travelling alone. Does anyone have an opinion on whether I should pick Providencia (Colombia) or Los Roques? I would like to do some diving and relaxing, ideally somewhere not overly touristy with basic, good, local accommodation/food/drink etc.

Your thoughts are much appreciated!

Safety in Brazil - Post protests

Hi,

Well, long story short, I purchased a plane ticket to go to Rio in September for one month. However, I watched some of the protests unfold across the cities in Brazil yesterday. I was already a little timid at the idea of going to Brazil alone, being an Italian gringo doesn't help me either, but now I'm really unsure. I can appreciate the fact that Brazilian citizens are upset, but I don't want to go if it would be unsafe for tourism.

Can someone give me an idea of whats going on there? Do you feel that tourists will become bigger targets for crime? Do you think the situation is going to get worse?

I really want to see this country, but I don't want to be on edge the whole time either.

Thanks for your help!

PS - Please only give info if you live in Rio or have spoken to a friend/family member that lives in Rio. more »

Peru-Ayacucho or Cajamarca?

Long time reader, first time writer. I am on my way to Peru in a week and need some help. I have 4 days or so before I meet up with my travel buddy in Lima and am wondering whether I go to Cajamarca or Ayacucho? Which of the two would have more sites/ruins to visit. I'm looking for a couple of quietish days in the Peru countryside without all of the hub bub of Cusco/Lima. Also, would I need to purchase airline tickets before I go, or is it easy enough to do with short notice(a few days) when I get there? Also, how far in advance should I get my tickets for MP? I've read it can take hours online to take care of this stateside...Is a week sufficient advance if I do it in Lima when I get there? Lastly, I think I read there is a North Face outlet in Lima. Can anyone verify? It would simplify what I bring if I knew I could always get some items there. BTW, what can I expect for night tem... more »

Drinking water and internal flights

I have two questions. What do people recommend for drinking water? Is it easy to get bottled water, or are iodine tablets or a water purifier good ideas? Secondly, when traveling on an internal flight in Ecuador, is it a problem to carry a small pocket knife in carry-on luggage? What about over 3 oz of sunscreen, etc? Do they have these security rules?

Thanks

Bus Iguazu to Salta & estancia along the way

Hola!

I'll be in Argentina in October and am planning to go from Puerto Iguazu to Salta by bus. I'm finding it quite difficult to determine the route maps on Andesmar. Is it a separate trip Iguazu to Posados and then Posados to Corrientes/Resistencia before going onto Salta?

I would love to do a one or two night stop over on the way and stay at an estancia to do some horse riding. Does anyone have any recommendations on an estancia or an area between Iguazu and Salta that would be a nice place to stay? If nowhere around here I would consider doing an estancia stay instead of a tour when I'm in or on the way to Mendoza.

Only trouble is I'm travelling alone and therefore don't want to hire a car to get to somewhere off the beaten track for safety reasons. My plan might be a little unrealistic I don't know. Any advice appreciated.

Ive never been there but I informed myself quite well, so I have informations about accomodations and treks. End of june would be perfect for me but I have some time, so Im at least a little bit flexible. And if there is someone who wants to go right now or in a few days, please write me, Im in! :-)
Thanks

Tips and experience of an Aussie arriving in Buenos Aires

Hola!

I arrived in Buenos Aires 2 weeks ago and having a lovely time. I just wanted to share some of my experiences particularly with regards to questions I had before my trip but also a couple of things I picked up since I arrived. Hope some people may find my experiences helpful.

  • Buying reciprocity fee online

This was reasonably straightforward however the first time I tried to get it, the website wouldn't process my payment. This was about 2 days before I was due to fly to I tried again the following morning and it worked this time. So guess I'd suggest, buy it at least a few days in advance to give yourself some leeway if something doesn't work as you expect.

  • Outbound travel when entering Argentina on one way ticket

I had read previously on Thorntree that the airlines can be concerned with whether you have a ticket to leave the country you're entering because th... more »

Water and weather

Hello:
I can't get a grasp from reading moon and lonely planet guide books about water temperature. Am I correct in assuming that all the Andean Mt lakes are too cold to swim in? How about rivers, for example if I go kayaking in the Banos area?
As well, how about the coast? I am assuming it is similar to the Nicaraguan coast this time of year. Mostly over cast some afternoon showers and sun coming out for an hour or 2 hear and there?
Thanks for your insights

Cafayete to Cordobo

hello,

My fiancee and I will be traveling through Argentina in November Via Bolivia and were wondering if there was a bus from Cafayete to Cordoba. We'll be working our way through Salta and area and all the bus info we can find stats in Salta.

Would we have to double back to Salta or is there a direct route?

thanks!

Help! - Lima to Oxapampa

Hi!

My flight will be arriving in Lima on Thursday of next week, at 6am. This wouldn't be an issue if I was able to check into a hostel for the following night. However Im planning on going to Selvamonos in Oxapampa, and the only buses i can find seem to leave in the evening - around 6pm

So, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to what I could do from 6am to 6pm. Keeping in mind I will probably be very jetlagged after 24 hours of flights and layovers-and would love to be able to have some rest/get a shower. I know most hostels only let you check in after 11 or 12. But i think its pretty pointless to check in somewhere at this time - only to be leaving for a bus a few hours later! Does anyone know of anywhere that i could leave my backpack/ or just chill out and relax for the day?? - Or if there are any buses to Oxapampa which leave earlier in the day?

Any hel... more »
