Border crossing problems in Tierra Del Fuego

Howdy!

A friend and I are currently in Ushuaia, Argentina right now. We have been here for almost three weeks trying to find transportation to Puerto Willaims. Nothing exists. The weather is preventing sailing for the next week and we are tired of waiting. There was one ballsy Lithuanian who was going to take us across but the local and very corrupt Prefectura shut him down.

So, we found another way to get there. 30-40 kilometers west of Ushuaia on the other side of the Chilean-Argentina border there is a little estancia. I have some solid advice that the local Chilean fishermen stop there and that they would be glad to take us to Puerto Williams. The only problem is we would do all of this without getting an exit stamp from Argentina.

What do you guys think? I know we are running a fairly big risk here, but I am hoping to find out what exactly that risk is? I am also look... more »

1 month to go from Santiago to Lima

Hello Friends!

I am currently in Mendoza, lovely city, mr. hugos bike rentals are great!!

However on the 8th of May i am heading to santiago. From there I have no commitments accept to be back in Lima by the 8th of June. This leaves things pretty open although money is tight.. i have only about a 1000 to spend this month. As wonderful as Machu Pichu would be, it is not going to happen this trip. Ideally I would like to got to three great towns and spend about a week in each spot... maybe San Pedro Atacoma so that I can see the Valle de la luna, and then two cities in Peru, suggestions? Also i was planning on traveling this month via bus? is that silly considering my tight budget... i was thinking about hitch-hiking but i am a female traveling sola, and im better off not risking it i think.

Thanks for all the help and advice!

Cheers,

Ethnotourism Chile

We are a family of 5 Australians having a year long sabbatical in Southern Chile, now living in Pucon, with time to give some feedback to Lonely Planet. Wanting to experience some indigenous culture of the Mapuche, we followed LP´s advice regarding the Huilliche region west of Orsorno and took a 2 day tour with local tour company, Mawidan. We had 2 of the most memorable days of out entire trip so far. We were unable to take part in one of their overnight walks or rides to the hidden bays because the children are too young, but the 2 day tour in their 4x4 Range Rover all over the coastal Cordillera was fantastic. Hardly a minute was wasted as we visited local families, hugged 1000 year old alerce trees, walked to hidden lakes, handled and used Huillche artefacts and absorbed at least some of the indigenous sentiments and history. LP was spot on in the assessment of this area of Chile a... more »

San pedro de atacama salt flat tours

Hi,

I am currently travelling in Chile and interested in doing a salt flat tour from San pedro to uyuni. My issue is that I have to be in la Paz for the 6th of may for the start of another tour. I was wondering how easy it is to get a tour sorted for the next day in San pedro. Ideally I would get into San pedro on the 30th or the 1st of May. If I could arrange a tour that started on the 2nd it would be perfect as I could then make my way from uyuni to la Paz for the 6th. Does anybody know if you can arrange tours this quickly? Also a girl at the hostel I stayed in Santiago had been told that the tours were sold out for the next week by a friend. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated. First time travelling alone and worried that I will get there and then have to fly back to Santiago to get a flight to la Paz.

Private guide for San Pedro de Atacama

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anyone has had experience in sourcing a good private guide for San Pedro de Atacama. My husband and I are going there in August to do some photography. We will be getting up very early and staying out late so do not want to inconvenience others. Is it possible to hire a private guide to take us around that would have English as our Spanish is a bit rudimentary. We could rent a vehicle and than just go with the guide or a guide with his/her own vehicle would be fine too.
We would like to do a similar thing across the border in Bolivia.
Any ideas along this line and contacts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Traveling Central / South Chile - Feb - March Costs?

Hi there,

I wonder how expensive chile really is for backpackers. Im considering a travel to central / south chile, do a lot of hiking ( torres, lake district), maybe a side tirp or two to argentina. Staying in cheap hostels, local food, buses and so on Also its gonne be february / march.. But not doing it the dirt cheap way.. I usually spent around ~900 €, which comes to 1.200 US for a month in Colombia or Venezuela.

How much should I count for a trip to chile? Is it a lot more of trouble to look for traveling cheap in chile then in other countries?

Any advice / experience appreciated.

Santiago AND someplace(s) else?! Ideas?

Hi All,

I'm ending a couple months in South America in Santiago, but was thinking it might be worthwhile to visit another place in Chile as well. Can anyone suggest me a city/place to visit outside Santiago? I'm thinking, in terms of a flight back to the USA, I'll either have to backtrack to Santiago, or head North to Lima.

Thanks for ideas!

Today I will go to see the Moon-Desth valley. Tomorrow I would like horse riding around San Pedro. Can you suggest me which tour is good, possibly alternative to the moon valley or it is worth it to visit it twice?

Also can you recommend a company ?

thanks

Theft

Recently we visited the north of Chile, and had a marvolous time at San Pedro de Atacama, Putre and Arica.
We arrived and departed by bus in Calama.
On arrival and departure some guys tried to steal our luggage at the bus station.
The way of working is that they eject dirt over your luggage and then want to help you.
Be aware and be alert , else you miss a piece of your luggage.
