Ruins along the Northern coast
Hello ! Planning my first trip to Peru and would really like to see some of the sites North of Lima before going to Machu Picchu, specifically Sechin, Chan Chan, and Sipan. I would like to know if anyone knows of a tour operator operating such a tour or if I'll have to wing it. If so, would such a tour be do-able by bus in four days. Any other note worthy archaeological sites of interest along this route anyone can recommend would be greatly appreciated. Love to see Kuelap, but I'm afraid it's a little too far off the route to squeeze in to my itinerary. Thank you all so much !

Six days in Cuzco/Sacred Valley area - excursion ideas?
Hi - I'll be in Peru for about 2.5 weeks with my wife later this month. We have six full days in the Cuzco area. The only thing I have booked so far based on Thorntree suggestions is the entry for Machu Pichu + Huayna Picchu 7am access for day 5 of 6 in order to acclimatize and end our trip to the area on a high note.
I read several older posts that answered broader itinerary questions for all of Peru, but with less focus on the Cuzco area. My wife and I enjoy hiking, exploring archeological sites, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities. We're looking to experience little adventures on our own rather than going with a large organized tour group. We're still tourists like everyone else of course, but we enjoy a little more control of our schedules. We speak Spanish decently so we're not afraid of leaving more well-worn paths.
Does anyone have suggestions on day t...

Hiring guide in Cusco for treks?
Hello,
We are 4 people looking to do two separate 4- to 5-day treks in the Cusco region in late May/early June.
Researching in advance on the internet, all I can find are the fully outfitted treks. However, a dining tent, army of mules, etc. seems quite excessive for our style. We would prefer to bring (and carry) our own gear but hire a guide in Cusco for peace of mind. We might even consider a mule to lighten the loads if costs are reasonable, and if the guide could provide food I'll admit it would be nice not to have to think about those logistics as well - is that possible? Two of us are very experienced backpackers in wilderness areas throughout the Western US, the other two have more modest experience but everyone in the group is physically fit.
My main question is, how feasible is it to arrive in Cusco and make such arrangements for a trek starting one or two days lat...

Can I wait until the day before to book Colca Trek from Arequipa?
Hi All,
I'm hoping to do a 3D/2N trek through Colca Canyon beginning July 20th. I've been in contact with Vlado Soto (who was recommended in the book), but his price - at least at this point - is $300 per person. I don't think that I can pay that.
Anybody know whether I'd be able to book a decent 3/2 group trip for a better price if I hold out until getting to Arequipa, which coincidentally will be the day before I want to start the trek?
Much appreciated, cheers!

Getting from Cusco, Peru to Calama, Chile
In July, a friend and I are taking a 2-week adventure through northern Chile (San Pedro de Atacama), Bolivia (Uyuni & La Paz) and then to Peru (Cusco/Machu Picchu). We have a round-trip flight booked from Santiago (where we're currently studying) to Calama so we need to find a way back from Cusco to Calama. We have two days to do this. Is it possible to do this by bus in that amount of time? Any tips are appreciated! Thanks :)

Peru May 17-June 2ish 2013
Hi!
I'm taking a couple of days of work to go backpacking in Peru (leaving next Friday) and I wanted to know if some of you guys had good tips/advice for these places I want to go see:
- Lima (I was told we can do "parapente" in Miraflores -paragliding?- and surf too? Have you heard of that?)
- Ica to go see the Nazca lines (how much is it? Should I book the flight in advance?) and maybe go to Huacachina to do some sand surf (has anyone done that?)
- Arequipa
- Puno for the Titicaca Lake (what's the best way to see it, best spots?)
- Cuzco/Sacred Valley/Macchu Picchu. I want to see the sunrise in MP, I heard it was possible and I know I should stay one night at Aqua Calientes to do that - has anyone done this? I haven't booked the climbing of Huanay Picchu ahead of time but is there a way to climb the other mountain without reservation? What should I do to organize my trip th...

mobile USB modems in Cusco
i have a job that allows me to be located anywhere -- as long as i have a reasonably fast and stable internet connection. i'm currently in guatemala, but considering relocating to cusco for a year. what's the internet situation in cusco nowadays? i find the easiest internet solution in most countries is to get a mobile USB modem (dongle), and i saw that peru offers this service via Claro. is it easy to get a USB modem in peru, or can it be problematic contract-wise if you're not a peruvian citizen?
and do the USB modems get good speeds in cusco? by "good" speeds, i mean fast enough to video skype, about 3Mbs download / 1Mbs upload. if you think a claro USB modem isn't a good solution for good internet, can you point me to an alternative? thanks for you help! cheers, marcos

Peru 2 Week Itinerary Advice
Hey all,
My girlfriend and I are headed to Peru for 2 weeks in early June. I'd love some feedback on our tentative itinerary.
Day 1: Arrive Cusco, late afternoon.
Day 2: Cusco
Day 3: Cusco, travel to Aguas Calientes in the evening.
Day 4: Machu Picchu, overnight in Ollantaytambo.
Day 5: Sacred Valley, working our way back to Cusco. Overnight bus to Arequipa.
Day 6: Arequipa
Day 7: Arequipa
Day 8: Travel to Cabanaconde.
Day 9-10: Independent trek through the Colca Canyon.
Day 11: Bus back to Arequipa, overnight bus to Ica
Day 12: Huacachina
Day 13: Bus to Lima
Day 14: Lima
Day 15: Early flight home
It feels a little bit more rushed than I'm used to on a trip, but I've seen Peru itineraries that are even more packed on this forum. Realistically, are we stretching ourselves too thin? If needed, what should be cut?
Also, what are our chances of leaving our bags in...

Qoyllur Rit'i or Snow Star Festival
Hello all fellow travelers. I have a question regarding this festival, which will happen very soon. I would like to attend it, but have no idea about how to start planning it.
Has anyone been there? What days should I plan, which is the correct site, how to get there, what gear to take.
All I know is that this year it will be on the weekend of the 25th of May.
Thank you all
Cruz Del Sur - Different classes of seats
I am trying to book seats on Cruz Del Sur on Lima to Nazca route.
I am confused between different classification of seats
1. Lower Deck - VIP - Asiento Libre - 37USD
2. Upper Deck - regular - Asiento Libre - 27USD
3. Upper Deck - On Sale - Ocasion Libre - 20USD
4. Upper Deck- Outstanding - insuperable libre - 12USD
I do understand the VIP and the regular seats. But what is the "On Sale and the "outstanding seats"
Why are they priced so low and how uncomfortable would they be on a 7 hrs journey??
What do you guys suggest??
Regards
