Need advice on route to Patagonia (from Toronto)
Hi all,
I'm facing a major dilemma and could use your advice. I'm planning a two month trip to Chile/Argentina/Patagonia (focus on Patagonia), Jan. 31 - Apr. 4, and have been hearing that if I plan to head as far south as Ushuaia, while also wanting to do the TDP (full circle) and other scenic spots down there.
My dilemma is with regards to finding the best route to get down there, and these are my options:
1. Toronto - Santiago - Toronto
Seems to be cheapest option, but it means I will have to travel by land (bus, hitchhiking) all the way south via Carretera Austral. This way I will probably do the TDP first, which will delay my arrival to the area of Ushuaia and potentially make it very cold down there at the time (?) This way, I will also need to return back to Santiago for return flight, and not sure how difficult it will be if I also want to make it to B.A. to see som...

San Pedro - Dec 20/21 - Daytrips - Travel companions wanted!
Hello,
we've been trying to rent a car for San Pedro de Atacama / Calama area for two days to do some daytrips on our own, e.g. camping at the Tatio Geysir, Valle de la luna etc. But it seems that all the car rental companies are fully booked out.
This is why we are looking for some travel companions for those two days who either have a rented car or a willing to rent a more expensive car together to explore the area.
We are 31 and 34, easy going and adventurous. In case you are interested in spending two days with us in the Atacama desert, please get in touch.

Ruta de los siete lagos
Hola hola
I am planning on doing all or part of the ruta on foot to camp wherever i like for as long as i like as i hear it is one heavenly place.
-Are there places along the ruta where i can buy food supplies for my camping or will i have to carry everything from day one, i know there is some hostels that offer food but it is probably expensive.
-Are there off road trails between the lakes or is it all on the road?
-If i can only do half of it which part would you recommend, which part has more free camp spots and good fishing spots?
-Is water available from streams along the ruta or do I need to buy water ?
Thanks a million,
T

Brazil Visa for U.S. Citizen - 30 Days to Enter??
Hi everyone,
I just got back from the Brazillian consulate where I've been told I can come and pick up my visa on 18 December. So far, so good. HOWEVER, I was skimming some travel forums just now and I saw some chatter that you have a 30 day period in which you need to validate your visa by entering the country. I'm leaving on the 16th of January, arriving the morning of the 17th, so presuming my visa is approved on the 18th of December that would be exactly 30 day until I arrive. Now, this is cutting it just a tad close, as I'm flying standby to Brazil. My husband works for an airline, so we fly "space available", meaning we could get bumped off a flight and put on a later one if the flight fills up. I can't leave for Brazil any earlier, unfortunately, due to the fact that I, you know, have to go to this place called "work".
So, I of course have totally freaked out about this. ...

Traveling sola in Lima
Hola! I am a female traveling sola into Lima by bus. All I need to do is get from the bus station to the airport. All my guide book says is hail the most decent looking taxi. Um, that sounds a little sketch to me. I also was robbed in Chile and am a little on edge about Lima with all the hype. Any rec's out there? Maybe a taxi company that is legit? Thanks for the help!

Santiago - Lima - Buenos Aires itinerary/travel advice
Hi guys,
So I am taking 3 months in the summer to visit as much of South America as I can in a nice slow fashion without any crazy rushing around. What I am after is advice on the route. The cheapest flight (which I have already bought) goes into Santiago and out of Buenos Aires. As a result I know I am going to be geographically looping. My main worry is whether the order I am seeing things in makes sense. Any comments on my basic map plan from anyone that has gone North then South would be gratefully appreciated!!

I am planning on being in Porto Seguro, Bahia province in Brazil for Carnival. I know the end date of Carnival this year is February 12th but I was wondering if porto seguro holds carnival a week up to this date? Or through February 12th and a little after? I many towns have some different schedules. I couldnt find any dates for portos seguros carnival and just want to set up accomodation for the best week or so to be there for there carnival. Also has anyone done couch surfing for carnival in any town? aside from this are there any good hostels or apartments to rent, cheaper places to stay in Porto Seguro for there carnival? An answer to any one of these questions is greatly appreciated! Thank you
Slow Boat Schedule Tabatinga to Manaus?
I am arriving in Leticia on Decembe 31st and plan to leave the day after or soon after for Tabatinga and the slow boat to manaus. Does anyone know the departure schedule of the 3 day slow boats to Manaus? They they depart daily? If you have done this route any other information would be very helpful. Are there safe places to put your bags on the boat? Is there a best deck to sleep on? What are the current prices? Thank you so much!

South America and South Asia - Peru, Chile, India, Nepal
Hey Everyone,
I spent almost 3 months in South America then almost 4 moths in India and Nepal doing some amazing things including hiking in Patagonia, Chile and to Machu Picchu, Peru. I White river rafted in Pucon, Chile. I visited family in Valparaiso and I sand boarded in Huacachina, Peru. I volunteered at Mother Theresa House in Calcutta, India and hiked the Himalayas in Nepal. I am interested in going to PR this spring break and Duran, Ecuador for a medical service trip, because I just need to get away from med school. If you are interested in reading my blog I have many entries about my travels, guides to traveling as a solo woman and a list of what to pack: I incude prices so you can estimate how much it should cost you.

Medellin Neighborhoods: Laureles vs El Poblado
In a few weeks I will be moving to Medellin, Colombia to begin teaching English for 6 months to a year. After some research on the city I have narrowed down the two neighborhoods I will likely end up in to the Laureles/Estadio area and El Poblado, as both are the safest in the country. I am asking for your advice and insight as to which neighborhood will give me the better experience. I am a 22 year old male, and am going hoping to make some good friends, play a good bit of soccer, and enjoy the nightlife and weather. I am also going to be on a budget, although I do have some money saved up. Does anybody have any preference between the 2 areas that you think I should know? Any insight helps!
Thanks in advance!
