Chiloe NP - Playa Cole Cole

Heading to the Lake District, planning to be in Castro on Christmas and then going to the national park on the 26th or 27th.

I've read about Playa Cole Cole, its a long hike and most likely I will have to overnight somewhere in the park. Are there accommodations near the beach or is it only campgrounds?

Also, if anyone happens to be considering doing the trek around the same time and don't mind some company, feel free to get in touch with me!

WHich backpacking route? (Chile, Peru, Bolivia)

Hi! Starting Mid January I will be backpacking for a month and a half from Buenos Aires (where I live) to Chile, Peru, Bolivia. I had wanted to hit Santiago, Atacama, Cusco, Lima, La Paz, Uyuni more or less. I was wondering due to the time of year if I should start with Bolivia (then Peru then Chile then back home to BA), or do the reverse starting in Chile? I had really wanted to start my trip doing the jeep tour starting in (Bolivia) Tupiza and goes Uyuni (heard its better than the jeep trip uyuni to Tupiza)but heard that rains could effect the roads and that kind of excursion in Bolivia that time of year (as opposed to the end of February?). I don't mind a little rain, or a few delays but I would rather deal with that at the start of my trip when I still have time to change my upcoming plans, but if the weather is better at the end of february I would rather end in Bolivia. Its my ... more »

Avoid Madness deadliest road

Hi Folks,
I have been looking at TT for about two years planning this holiday so I am well aware of user's needs for positive posts, and construcctive travel advice.

However to the point:
To make sure you are not dissapointed, think carefully before going with Madness. Reviews on TT show Madness to be pretty good. But having asked the right questions about "will you have a tour tomorrow", and "have you got a group of sufficient size to ensure a tour tomorrow" they cancelled my bike ride at 8:00pm the previous night. It is clear they lied to me in response to my questions so as to get me to sign up - in the hope that others would come along AFTER me to make a group.

Please be carefeul to ensure dissapointmnet, I had planned this for a year, and since my tavel plans see me on a bus the next day, and it is too late to re-organise, I can not ride.

In travel you have to take the... more »

Boyoca region / Chiquinquira Guitars

My wife & I will be in Colombia for about a month in February, initially doing some wheelchair distributions in the Cucuta area with Canadian/Colombian Rotary clubs. We then have a few months on our own to see Colombia, Equador & Peru. We are quite interested in the Boyaca region and all it has to offer including the guitar making town of Chiquinquira. Has anyone any insight into this town/region and purchased any instruments there? Could not really find much on the web other than the history etc. I'm undecided as to either bringing a small travel guitar or possibly purchasing one there. Any guitar travellers with some insight into the pros and cons would be appreciated. Thanks

Budget hostel in Honda or any place before Medellin?

Hi all,
I'm looking for a place to stay in between Bogota and Medellin, anybody any suggestion? I'm looking at the map and it seems the only place which seems interesting is Honda but can't find information about hostels there, except for Belle Epoque, which is too expensive (90.000 cop) for me.

colca canon

Hi,

I am planning a trip to the colca canon and am currently in arequipa. I don't know if the 3 day and 2 night tours of the canyon are far better than just the 2 days and 1 night. I am keen to do some trekking and I was thinking the shorter trip won't allow much time to do this.

I appreciate the advice!

10% IVA Hotel Tax

Does anyone know if as a foreigner, you have to pay the 10%IVA tax on hotel rooms? I've read varying accounts of people saying that most hotels will charge you if you don't ask for it to be removed. Does this apply to all levels of accommodations or just more expensive hotels?
