Avoid Madness deadliest road

Hi Folks,
I have been looking at TT for about two years planning this holiday so I am well aware of user's needs for positive posts, and construcctive travel advice.

However to the point:
To make sure you are not dissapointed, think carefully before going with Madness. Reviews on TT show Madness to be pretty good. But having asked the right questions about "will you have a tour tomorrow", and "have you got a group of sufficient size to ensure a tour tomorrow" they cancelled my bike ride at 8:00pm the previous night. It is clear they lied to me in response to my questions so as to get me to sign up - in the hope that others would come along AFTER me to make a group.

Please be carefeul to ensure dissapointmnet, I had planned this for a year, and since my tavel plans see me on a bus the next day, and it is too late to re-organise, I can not ride.

In travel you have to take the... more »

Good Deal?

Think this is a good deal but not sure--flights out of NYC to La Paz are $658. Signed up this morning. American Airlines.

Options for travelling La Paz - Uyuni during rainy season

Hi guys,
we are trying to understand which is the best option to ge to Uyuni from La Paz during rainy season (end of December).

Todo Turismo night bus seems to be the most intelligent option, but we are reading many safety concerns about Bolivian roads and drivers.

Daily bus could be better from safety point of view, even if it means spending all the day on the road.

Maybe bus to Oruro and then train to Uyuni is the right compromise?

At the end of the day, getting to Uyuni in the morning is not very useful ... you still have to wait until the next morning to start the Salt Flat tours...

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts..

Weather in Uyuni now (Dec 14)

Anyone in Uyuni now or just been to the Salt Flats? According to weather report, it is raining today. Just wonder who bad the rain is and does it mean that there is no chance to see the sun or the mirror effect there.

Salt Flat tour Wednesday 12th or Thurs 13th

Hi all,

Im currently in La Paz and tomorrow im headed down to Uyuni where I want to book a salt flat tour (probably the 3 day 2 night one that starts and ends in Uyuni) preferabally starting Wednesday

Im travelling alone so was wondering if anyone else would be in Uyuni around this time and looking to do a tour as ive heard that you can get better rates booking as part of a group rather than an individual

Let me know!

Buying/Cycling in La Paz, Bolivia...

Hi Crew,

We are looking at buying road bikes in La Paz Bolivia to cycle to Peru, and possibly continue on. We need to find a store that sells second hand bicycles or a website that list classifieds in La Paz. Could anyone offer some suggestions? And if you have any information about cycling around Lake Titicaca that would be useful as well.

Thanks in advance.

Adrian

Volunteer Projects Cochabamba

Hi

I am hoping to volunteer in Cochabamba for a month early next year. Does anyone know any good organisations they can recommend? Am looking at Care/Orphanage projects or possibly teaching english. Am looking for an organisation that can also arrange homestay and Spanish lessons. Have been looking at Sustainable Bolivia,Projects Abroad so far. Does anyone have any experience of these organisations?

Would be great to hear any advice and tips.....there are so many volunteer NGO's when you start looking its difficult to know who to go with!!

Thanks

Salt dessert, visit from where?

Hi.

Next stop in our travel is Salta, Argentina, and we want to head up for La Paz for New Years. On the way, we would like to visit the salt dessert and maybe Potosi (the minetown). Any ideas of how we can do this best? I have read, that someone took the bus from Salta to San Pedro de Atacama, and went through the dessert from here, ending up in Uyuni. Is this the only options, or is there a better?

Any ideas for touroperators, now that we are at it?

Best!

Bolivia in 1 week

Hello! I have about 1 week in Bolivia, maybe 8 days, starting in La Paz and ending on lake titicaca because I need to get to Peru. I want to spend a day or 2 in la Paz and maybe bike the death road, definitely do a salar de uyuni tour, and end on lake titicaca with a night on isla del sol. If possible, I'd love to also spend a day in potosi. Is all of this doable and is there a suggested plan/bus route? Thanks!!!

La Paz to Cochabamba

Hi

I am trying to get from La Paz to Cochabamba. I have been looking at airlines that operate this route but seem to have hit a brick wall!! Does anyone know if AeroSur are still going or if there is another airline? I was hoping to be able to book from the UK before I left. Just getting to Bolivia from England is a major event in itself!! Otherwise any tips on bus companies from La Paz to Cochabamba.

Thanks

US Citizens Getting Bolivian Visas in Chile

Hi there!

I'll be traveling to Chile & Bolivia in a few weeks, and I'm trying to figure out the visa situation for Bolivia. We have all of the documents listed on the Bolivian visa website (yellow fever vaccine, proof of hotel reservation, etc.), but I'm wondering where we can actually pick up the Visa. A few specific questions:

  • Is it possible to apply for and pick up the Bolivian visa in Santiago airport (SCL)? How long does it take?
  • Alternatively, is it possible to apply for and pickup the Bolivian visa in San Pedro de Atacama? If so, how long does it take?
  • Lastly, is it possible to apply for and pickup the Bolivian visa in Calama?

Thanks!
Eric

Can't decide - Itinerary help for Bolivia

Hey guys,

Hard to decide. Difficult choice, and would appreciate some enlightenment from our learned friends here.

I am putting together my final itinerary, and found that I will have 3 days in La Paz.

From what I read somewhere, 3 days in La Paz can be too much.

So, I am thinking whether I should go to -
a) just Sucre for one day. Too rush? But enough time to check out some major sights and walk around to enjoy the atmosphere?
b) staying at Isla Del Sol overnight. I will go to Puno afterwards, so it is either a day trip to Isla del Sol or spending a night there.
c) day trip from La Paz to Coroico. For this, I am not going to take the Death Road as I think I would be scared by riding bike downhill. Is Coroico a nice place to spend a day?
d) just stay in La Paz? But anything interesting to do?

Help, please. more »

I'm not sure if anyone can help me as I'm hoping to travel to Uyuni just before Christmas and then go directly to the border of Bolivia. Are there any three day tours that take you to the border at Villaźon as I need to cross and go to salta in a short space of time! I'd love some advice!
Thanks
