Custom route in Torres-del-Paine

Hi there,

I am thinking about packrafting trip in TDP, with large clockwise circle including paddling down Rio Grey and Rio Serrano and ascending along Tyndall glacier, crossing Lago Grey. Obviously, that'll require trekking outside of the designated trails and some unauthorised camping. For sure, we're not planning to create open fires, I'm speaking mostly about camping on small beaches, trekking through bush without trails and crossing lakes and rivers.

What's the real situation with all of these: will we be arrested or fined? Are there any success/unsuccess stories?

Belem - Manaus - Porto Velho - Campo Grande

Hiya's,

I'm going to be travelling up the coast of Brazil, basically from Rio to Salvador and then up to Belem. From here i wanted to do a trip up the Amazon and make my way down through the Pantanal headed all the way down to Iguacu before going west and into Chile, Bolivia and Peru eventually.

My original itinerary has changed, so i'm trying to figure out a new one. I was aiming to spend about 2 months in Brazil but looking at the distance it seems too far to comfortably do in 2 months now. Am i correct in thinking this?

I know i can take the boat all the way from Belem to Manaus to Porto Velho, but not sure how long that would take?

Can i get a bus from Porto Velho to Campo Grande?

And is this a good route to see a nice chunk of Amazon jungle?

So much to see and just not enough time!

Thanks for any tips :) more »

Rio Carnival 2012?

Hey,

I'm new to this forum, but I will be traveling solo to and staying in Rio for a week from 17 Feb-23 Feb.

I heard Rio can be dangerous if you travel alone, so I'm trying to see if anyone wants to meet up to do a city tour or check out the nightlife.

I'm from California but living in Peru for the year, so taking advantage of being so close to Brazil to see what Carnival is all about.

Is this agenda too crowded? Need Advice re: Chile y Argentina

My wife and I are traveling to Chile/Argentina for one month, and have a pretty aggressive agenda. She is worried it is too much moving, too many travel days. We are looking for advice. We have pencilled out about 6 versions, starting and ending in different areas, but the main issues are traveling back and forth across the Argentine/Chilean border, and whether to include a trip to an estancia on the Atlantic Coast for a few days.

Day 1-4 Arrive Santiago, rent car, drive to Valparaiso y Viña del Mar
Day 5 Fly to lake district (Temucah? Port Montt?)
Day 6 Lake crossing to Bariloche, spend night in Bariloche
Day 7-11 Fly fishing near Esquel (renting equipment, staying in a lodge with meals)
Day 11 Bus from Esquel to Trelew, then taken to Estancia on the coast between Trelew and Comodoro (Bahia Bastamante)
Day 11-13 At Bahia Bastamante
Day 14 Fly Trelew to El Carafate, t... more »

Feria in El Bolson

What time of the year is the Feria most active? When does it start to slow down for the colder season? I went once after the weather had cooled down and there were only about 20 stands. A half hour there and I had seen everything and had a sandwich for lunch.

Bolivia > Chile? or just Chile?

Hello,

I would like to request some advice.

Currently, I have an itinerary on hold that arrives in La Paz, Bolivia on March 15th and leaves Santiago, Chile on March 27th. Obviously this is not ideal, but I only have the timeframe indicated (I am a graduate student), I am on a budget, and I am at the mercy of an airline's frequent flier program (I am trying to use as few miles as possible).

Given these constraints, how should I handle my trip? Right now, I am thinking 2 days in La Paz, 2/3 days in Uyuni, 2/3 days in San Pedro de Atacama, fly to Santiago for 1 day, 2/3 days in Valparaiso/Vina del Mar, and 1 final day in Santiago before I fly back. I will consider overnight buses if they are available.

Alternatively, I could fly into and out of Santiago on the same days. What would you do with 12 days in Chile? Is it okay to go to Tierra del Fuego, etc. in late March? If so, ... more »

5 questions about The Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana)

1. Out of the 3 Guianas which have the most to offer travelers/tourists?
2. Are these 3 countries very similar and expensive?
3. These countries very hard to get to, especially from the USA?
4. Can one travel around Suriname and French Guinea without Dutch and French? English widely spoken?
5. Is traveling to the Guianas for everyone?

Horse Riding in Baños

Hi!

I will be arriving in baños tomorrow night the 30/1 and was hoping to organise a horse riding tour for the following days, either the 31/1 or the 1/2, would anyone else be interested? I would be looking at roughly a four ride...I am also a beginner rider:)

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for reputable guides... I've read that some of the operators treat the animals poorly..

Many thanks...!

Easter in Brazil

Hi there,

I just wondered if people could advise me on what happens at easter time in Brazil. Do things such as buses, shops, ferries close and stop over the easter weekend or not?

We were looking at getting the ferry from Rio to Ilha Grande on Friday 6th April, which is good friday and returning the monday/tuesday? But just wanted to check this would still be doable over the holiday weekend.

Thanks in advance
J

Climbing Sangay!

Hi, I´m looking for trekking partners to climb Volcan Sangay, around the 10th of February. Sangay is a 5,230 meter volcano deep located seep within Sangay National park, roughly halfway between Riobabmba and Macas. The climb is not considered technical, though we might need crampons if it snows. The volcano can be dangerous as it is one of the more active volcanoes in Ecuador and the route to the base is long and muddy. It is about 6 or 7 days roundtrip beginning in village of Aloa, at at cost of around $475.00. Please contact me if you´re intetrested in this trip.

Warning – bikes in Maipu

My boyfriend and I hired bicycles from Mr Hugo’s Bikes in Maipu just before Christmas and are very concerned about the safety and maintenance of the bicycles. From the outset the brakes on both of our bikes barely worked. About an hour into our trip the arm of the pedal on my boyfriend’s bike snapped, it was made of flimsy plastic. When we called Mr Hugo he wasn’t surprised at all, and came to deliver a new bike.

The new bike lasted another couple of hours until we were riding along the main road of Maipu returning to Mr Hugos. Whilst riding along this road, which is quite bumpy, the new bike collapsed – breaking in half where the fork of the front wheel joins the bike. (We were later told by one of the staff that the bike was rusting inside, and this was not the first time that their bikes had broken in half.) My boyfriend fell face first into the road, loosing his two front teeth... more »

Peru & Bolivia Itinerary Advice Please

Hi

I really need some advice on our itinerary. We only have a little over 3 weeks (and that is stretching it) and there is so much we want to see. I've never been to South America but from the reading I have done I get the feeling that it is not good to be on a deadline!

So are we crazy to attempt the following (late August/early September):

2 nights Arequipa
1 night Colca Canyon tour
1 night bus to Cuzco
3 nights Cuzco
3 nights on Inca Trail
1 night Cuzco
1 night bus to Copacabana
2 nights Copacabana
2 nights La Paz
1 night Rurrenabaque (we would fly here)
2 nights Pampas tour
1 night Rurre (fly back to La Paz)
1 night bus to Uyuni
1 night Uyuni
1 night bus to La Paz
1 night La Paz for next morning flight

and some questions:

Is it possible to get a night bus to Uyuni then get on a one day tour that same day and be able to get on the night bus back to La... more »
