what to see outside Arequipa with a fear of heights?

Hi,

I am presently in Arequipa for a few more days. I want to see outside the city. Unfortunately, all that is suggested to me involves major heights -Colca Canyon, El Misti etc... I love the outdoors and long walks, villages, flora/fauna, textiles... Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

LIMA

We will be staying in Lima for 3 nights in June. Where will it be nice to stay, we do not want to be too far from the interestingplaces to visit. It is not easy to choose from the different areas of this huge city.
What advices for transportation inside Lima ? How can we recognise a safe taxi ? Do they have meters? Are buses reliable ? On arrival, taxi station is reliable ? What price to go into the city ?
Thanks for all answers

Huaraz - Hiking Partner, Laguna 69, Sunday May 18

Hi everyone,

I'm taking a day hike to Laguna 69 in Huaraz on Sunday, May 18 with my girlfriend. In my experience, day tours in Peru spend too much time eating lunch at restaurants that have agreements with the tour company and not enough time at the main destination. Reviews I've read of the Laguna 69 tours are none the exception.

My girlfriend and I are going to contract a taxi for the day. It will provide transport from Huaraz to the Laguna 69 trailhead, wait for us while we trek, and stop anywhere else we want on the way there/back. The total cost will be around 250 Soles, so if we get 2-3 more people it will cost the same as a day trip with the tour operators.

We are late 20s/early 30s and in good shape. If you are in reasonable shape and would like to join, please let me know!

Best,

Jose

Need help with Peru itinerary!!

Hello Travel Experts!

We just booked our international tickets to Peru and I need some help planning my itinerary there. We're getting into Lima on June 28th and will be headed back to the US on July 7th. Here's what I have so far:

June 29th- morning flight to Puerto Maldonado - 3 nights in Refugio Amazonas
July 2nd - fly to Cusco (afternoon flight) - 2 nights in Cusco (tues, wed nights)
July 4th (thu) - stay in olly (SV sights, Pisac)
July 5th (Fri) - early morning train to MP, spend day in MP, stay in Aguas calientes - Friday night
July 6th (Sat) - train back to Cusco. Spend last day and night relaxing in Cusco
July 7th (Sun) - early morning flight to Lima, intl flight back to US at 2:15 in the afternoon.

Couple of questions regarding this itinerary:
1. Does it make sense to spend 3 nights in PEM, or should I make it 2 nights and spend 1 extra day in the Cusc... more »

Peru without swarms of tourists

I’m looking for things to do in Peru other than Machu Picchu, I don’t really want to visit the same tourist spots that everyone else visits, does anyone know of some interesting places to visit that aren’t swamped with tourists?

Lima to Cuzco

A quick question on flight from Lima to Cuzco.
My international flight arrives in Lima about 4.30am and i would ideally like to move straight onto to Cuzco.
Is it the same airport for national flights as international flights, I also noticed that LAN have flights in the early afternoon, how long does it take to get through immigration etc then re-check in? if anyone has done this before
Thanks

Peru Trip Report & Reviews (Lima, Sacred Valley, Inca Trail/MP, Manu, Cusco

We went to Peru April 20-30 and really enjoyed our time there—the food, scenery, sights, and people all make the country an exceptional place to visit.

Lima:

Peru Star Hotel- nice rooms and location, helpful staff

Lima tip- bring a notebook for writing down addresses for taxi drivers.

I read a lot before our trip that made me apprehensive about Lima, particularly with regard to taking taxis. We were cautious in Lima (we generally avoided wearing our cameras around our necks) but, generally we felt safe. We found it refreshing to be in a cosmopolitan city in South America with so few visible tourists. We spent three days in Lima and felt like this was a perfect amount of time and, in fact, I recommend spending this amount time in Lima if you’re foodies like us since Lima appears to have many of the country’s best restaurants (for restaurant recommendations, check out m... more »

outside lima!

Hey- I am coming to Lima for 1 week and want to spend a few days in the city and then get out to some other places- I have already spent some time there, so know Miraflores and Barranco are cool places to hang out, but what about outside the city?

Most travellers have mentioned Huacachina as a good place to go, further south, but can anyone recommend any other places that would be sweet to hang out for a few days?

It will be June when we get there, so I imagine the weather won't be exactly beach-weather but are there any possible beach locations? Or best to avoid the beach if it will be too cold?

Thank you for any suggestions :)

Looking for partners for Huayhuash trek for this Friday 17 may (flexible)

Hi guys !!

We are thinking to do the huayhuash 10 days trek departing on this Friday 17 may 2013, we are flexible for +/- 2 days.. Anyone interested to join us? We are a French couple but we speak Spanish and English if that can help..

Please contact me ASAP if you are interested to come with us.

We are thinking to go through an agency. Not sure if we go low budget with Enjoy agency (500soles for 8 days (190USD/ 150€), little bit more for 9 or 10 days) or high budget with Quechuandes which look like much more professional for 1200 soles for 10 days (460USD/ 360€). We went to both agency and they were both nice but Quechuandes was looking much more serious in the organisation of the trek.

If you have any advice please tell us everything about your experience, your agency!! Thanks hips!!
Don't hesitate to contact us.

Crucial Vaccinations

Hello! In regards to vaccinations for Peru, which ones are crucial? I plan on getting the yellow fever vaccine in the Lima Airport. I have heard that Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Malaria (jungle) are recommended.

My flight leaves tomorrow so I would need to get them in Lima. Any recommendations on which ones I should get first? If any?

Thanks a bunch,
