international shipping from Chile

Hi, I am leaving Chile at the end of the week, and need to send some stuff back to the UK. I have checked the 'CorreosChile' site, but the only costs I can find are for courier service, which I don't want (it would be cheaper to pay additional baggage allowances for the rest of my travels!!).

Does anyone have any idea (roughly) of the cost of sending 7kg in a box approx 44cm x 31cm x 23cm to the UK using the cheapest method - is this 'Encomienda Internacional'? I may have to dump a bit more stuff if it's too outrageous!

Anybody interested in renting a 4x4 for Lauca?

Hi I'm looking for travel companions to rent a 4x4/ catch a lift with and go into Parque Nacional Lauca independently. I'm currently in Iquique and will be travelling to Arica this Thursday so would be ready to head into Lauca on Saturday or Sunday at the earliest, but am flexible with timings. Ideally I'd like to head to Putre on public transport and rent a car there once acclimatised - am currently looking into whether this is in fact possible.

Plan after Lauca is to head into Bolivia. I'm a 32 year old female and speak fluent Spanish.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Elena

Great Toyota Car for Sale

Hey Guys,
My friend and I are 1992 Toyota Corona in Santiago. We purchased the car in Santiago in January and have been traveling in it since. The car is in great condition and runs very well. The has approximately 260,000km (about 161K in miles). All the paperwork is updated including the revision tecnica, emissions, insurance, padron in my name, etc. It has all the 100,000 mile or equivalent in kilometers maintenance done to it, including a new battery, water pump, head gasket, spark plugs, distributor cap, muffler and more. It is a 5 speed manual with a firm clutch, good tires and good brakes and I am only the second owner of the cars life. We are asking 1.500.000,00 CLP (About $3100 USD) or best offer, and we even have a few nice girls that can do the transfer paperwork. Please contact me with questions and I can send you pictures. Thanks!

Hi there,

We are planning to do a cruise from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia and want also visit Cape Horn.
We will be there in December 2013.

Does somebody know if Cruceros Australis is the only operator?
Furthermore do we need to purchase a ticket in advanced or is there a possibility to get cheaper tickets on spot?

KInd regards

For Canadians - PC Card

Has anyone tried to use their PC ( interact or CC) in Chile?

Was there any extra fees beside the one from the bank machine?

I know the fees are really high when you even cross the border to the state so I was wondering if I should open up a bank account with a bank with more "user friendly" fees.

Thanks

Castro Mocopulli

Has anyone have any info on Castro's Mocopulli Airport?

It was supposed to open last November but I'm going on travel sites and Lan's site and I can't find any flights or that the airport is even registered there.

I'm going next November and I'm looking for a typical weekly schedule

Thanks for your help

Choosing honeymoon destination

Hello fellow travellers,
I'm trying to figure out the best destination for our honeymoon next year in February. I get to choose where we go and prepare the whole shabang, but she imposed the conditions ( to which I agreed). The criteria are few but very precise.:

  • see vulcanoes and heavy vulcanic activity (lots of fumaroles, mud pots, volcanoes etc);
  • clear skies and good temperatures to have beach time;
  • no need to take malaria pills;
  • good diving spots
  • if possible: see whales (but this is the least important one)
I was considering the North of Chile as I know we'll be served in temrs of vulcanic activity, nut I wonder baout the othe conditions? Plus I have allready been there, so I'm wondering if you can recommend some other place in the world with similar good vulcanic activity?
Thank you very much!!! more »

Supermarket - how do I tell them I don't want the change

At the supermarket you will typically get a total of an odd amount, e.g. 3493. The cashier asks something in a typical quick slurring mumble which will include "7 pesos" (for this example), that's all I've ever been able to make out . I have assumed they are asking do I want the change of 7pesos, but whether I say "no", "si", or "no quiero", or "no quiero vuelta", or "no quiero cambio", they still give me those useless coins. Can someone tell me what they are saying, and what I can say so I don't get given those no value coins.

Problems with LAN's website

Hi folks

Does anyone know what's wrong with LAN Chile's website? It won't let me look at the South America air passes and it hasn't been working for around 10 days now. I'm using the NZ branch of LAN but seems like most of the other countries' sites aren't working either. I can look up individual flights etc, but just not the Air Pass site.

Reciprocity Fee

I've paid the reciprocity fee as an American national entering Chile in 2010 for $140. Since the fee has now increased to $160, do I have to pay the difference at the cashier before queueing at passport control? My old receipt is still attached to my passport.
