Brazil Frequently Asked Questions

For the benefit of everyone dropping by the Brazil branch for the first time, please read this FAQ first. And I hope there can be some sort of way to moderate the thread to keep it updated and clean. I know there are some AWESOME regular contributors here who enjoy giving advice; I feel this thread can really help to condense the information available.

I'll go first, with some general thoughts from the South America FAQ. Many thank to Apollo for starting that thread and for a great idea. Hopefully we can have a similar thread for Brazil.

1) Use the "Search" function to find out if someone has already asked your question. Many questions have already been asked before, and regular contributors to the forum get tired of answering the same thing over and over again.

2) Read a few pages of posts. The most frequent... more »

flights to J P

Not having much luck sourcing flights from North America going into or close to Joao Pessoa. That is, without going thru Sao Paulo. Coming from Canada. Dont mind connecting flights out of the U. S. If you have done this route we would like to hear from you.

Jericoacoara- Fernando de Noronha

Hello,

I am going to be visiting Brazil in September and am planning on flying from Manaus up to Fortaleza so that from there I can go to Jericoacoara. I was planning around five days....is this a good amount of time to spend at this place? From there I want to travel as quickly (:-€) as I can to Natal I.e no points of interest along the way so that I can fly to Fernando de Noronha. Am thinking five nights in Fernando de Noronha as I understand it is fairly expensive.

Can anyone who's visited previously comment if this is a decent amount of time to spend in both places and if I have the right idea commute wise? And is it reasonable to leave Jeri in the morning and arrive in Fernando the same night? Or realistically will I have to stop somewhere on the way for a night?

Any tips/advice will be a help.

Many thanks x

12 days in brazil

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips for my upcoming trip to Brazil?

I am going to have 12 days in Brazil at the beginning of September. I will be flying in and out of Rio and I was thinking of going to iguazu falls, the pantanal and spending a few days on the beaches around Salvador.

Is this possible in 12 days? We can afford 1 or 2 internal flights.

How do we go about organising the pantanal trip -I am happy to book it when we are there but is there a specific town that we should go to to arrange it or should we book from Rio?

If anyone has any tips or suggestions I would really appreciate it!

Thanks

Meg

Carnival in rio

Hi,
Me and a friend are thinking of heading to RIo for the carnival in Feb 2014,we want to stay there for roughly a week.
We have an additional 3 weeks of travelling either before or after carnival....my question is we don't know whether to do rio and the Amazon or whether to do rio...Sao paolo....and macchu picchu.however we've heard feb/march isn't a great time to do the inca trail.

I'll be meeting her in SA from Perth and she'll be coming from Dublin.

We don't know which way to go without missing carnival.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

4 weeks trip - some suggestions ?

I'm planning a 4 weeks trip to Brazil, July / August.

I have been there 12 years ago (Cuiaba / Pantanal, Salvador (during Carnival), Rio, Florianopolis). Now I will go with my girlfriend, who was never there.

We will visit someone in Sao Paulo and want to include Rio and the Amazonas jungle. We do NOT want to "rush thru" but stay a few days at every place. So we have time left for one or maximum two spots. Large distances we will fly.

My questions are:

(1) Salvador de Bahia was beautiful, but is there an alternative, that I don't know yet?

(2) Is it worth to visit Iguazu Falls? Sounds like a silly question, but we have seen the Niagara Falls and the Victioria Falls in Africa. If Iguazu is not SO much different, we might skip it.

(3) We are considering two or three days at Ilha Grande / Paraty, seems like a nice stop between Sao Paulo and Rio. How is the weather in ... more »

Changing Azul flight

Hi all,

I booked a flight with Azul from Campo Grande to Rio back in March for May 22nd that I want to change to just 24 hours earlier. I asked them if it was possible but unfortunately not without extortionate fees, which result in me spending so much more than I paid for the ticket.

Does anyone know whether it is possible to go to the airport and 'convince' them to let me on an earlier flight? I have heard people having success with other airlines, but I am not sure what Azul are like. If it is not possible to change for free, I will prefer to wait for my scheduled flight.

Thank you in advance

Obtaining visa/immunizations in Peru (US citizen)

Hello,

I will be leaving to South America in 1 week visiting Columbia - Ecuador - Peru - Brazil. I was wondering if anyone has any experience w/ obtaining a Brazil visa while in Peru? To be honest, I am a bit worried about handing over my passport. I hear the process takes just a few days. Is it as easy as it sounds? I also know I need to get a yellow fever vaccination before I go to Brazil. I have never done this abroad before. Are there travel clinics anyone can recommend in Peru? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Obrigado!

Iguazu Falls and Rio in 7-10 days!?!

Yes...yes...I know, it is almost impossible to even think of doing the Iguaçu Falls and Rio in 7 days.....but that is all the time I have and I would like to definitely see these two places. Hence, that is why I am posting, in hopes to get some good expert advice and feedback from you all as to the best way to go about doing this. We will be flying down this July and I am thinking of actually flying into Buenos Aires as it's closer to the Falls and then catch a jumper flight to the Falls. Spend a couple of days there and then fly on to Rio for the remainder of our trip and fly back to the states out of Rio. I am not so much interested in the beach scene as I actually live in the tropics, plus I am guessing July will be chilly in Brazil. The only two MUST see items on our agenda are the Falls and the Christ Statue in Rio....other than that we are pretty flexible and open to whatev... more »

Bus from the Iguazu Falls to Sao Paulo

I am planning to visit to Sao Paulo from Iguazu Falls.

I catch a bus from Buenos Aires to Iguazu Falls in Argentina.

Is it cheaper / nicer to organise a bus from Argentina or Brazil side to take me to Sao Paulo? How do flights compare?

Please advise,
Sarah

Brazil for 2 weeks Any info would be GREATLY appreciated

Myself and my two friends are traveling to brazil from May 29th to June 12th and are wondering if we should go to Pantanal or to the Amazon. We are flying into to Rio and would be leaving from Rio to either expedition. What would you recommend? Length of time (thinking about a 4 night/5day trek but could be convinced to do more/less)? We really want to see wildlife, beautiful scenery, waterfalls etc. (most importantly wildlife in its natural habitat). Any companies to go with? Pricing?

Lastly, I know two weeks is short so what do you recommend us to see? I was thinking Rio, the trek (amazon/pantanal) and sao paulo. Anything we could do/see? Can we throw in Iguazu Falls?

Sorry for all the questions but any info would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Safety Issues (not just but mostly Rio)

OK, I am aware that the "safety" topic has been discussed before. I would still like some wise words on a particular concern of mine:

I will be visiting Brazil for the first time as part of a cruise along the coast from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro. Having done one cruise before, I found the official land excursions that were offered way too expensive and most of my fellow passengers... um, let's just say, not exactly the kind of people I want to spend a day with (Why am I going on a cruise again then, you wonder? Well, I do think it's a comfortable way of dragging your hotel along with you).

So, once we get to South America, I want to do mostly independent land excursions again, get off the ship, hire a cab for a day and have the cab driver take us where we want to go (i.e. from Itajai Port to Blumenau). In Rio, too, I want us to take a cab in the port to take us to the tra... more »

Bonito tips

Hi guys,

My girlfriend and i are traveling to Bonito in 2 weeks time and will be there for about a week.

Can anyone recommend some places and things to check out?
Definitely checking out Rio da Prata and rio sucuri.
Many recommendations for place to stay?
Probably looking at paying up to $80/room per night maximum - not looking to share a dorm this trip.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, cheers!
