Brazil Frequently Asked Questions
For the benefit of everyone dropping by the Brazil branch for the first time, please read this FAQ first. And I hope there can be some sort of way to moderate the thread to keep it updated and clean. I know there are some AWESOME regular contributors here who enjoy giving advice; I feel this thread can really help to condense the information available.
I'll go first, with some general thoughts from the South America FAQ. Many thank to Apollo for starting that thread and for a great idea. Hopefully we can have a similar thread for Brazil.
1) Use the "Search" function to find out if someone has already asked your question. Many questions have already been asked before, and regular contributors to the forum get tired of answering the same thing over and over again.
2) Read a few pages of posts. The most frequent...

brazil to bolivia
I am planning to visit Brazil in early 2014 and would like to slot in a week to 10 days in Bolivia (primarily to visit Uyuni), so would like some info on the best way to travel - presumably, fly - between the two countries. I have been researching flights from either Rio or Sao Paulo to La Paz and keep getting flight times of around 20 hours. Is this really the case? I had been to the two countries some 20 years ago (part of a longer itinerary around South America) and remember flying from Rio to La Paz and while it has been so long ago, I am pretty sure it did not take me that long. If I recall right, there was just a stop at Santa Cruz, but all the flights I am finding now seem to require going first to Lima, Santiago, or Bogota! I am hoping I am missing a shorter option.
Thanks for any help.
(Cross-posting this in the Bolivia forum.)

Where to spend my last 4 days in Brazil
Hi all, I realize this is a highly subjective question but here goes anyways... I will be in Brazil for a couple weeks the beginning of Brazil visiting a friend. The first part of the trip is all arranged--we are going to Sao Paulo, Rio, and Iguacu--but i get to pick the last destination (!). With so many amazing places to visit it is very hard to decide!
So, i am looking at:
The Panatal and/or Bonito (both or one over the other?)
Praia de Pipa
Salvador
The Amazon
or?
Thus far leaning towards the Panatal and/or Bonito or Praia da Pipa. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

flights to J P
Not having much luck sourcing flights from North America going into or close to Joao Pessoa. That is, without going thru Sao Paulo. Coming from Canada. Dont mind connecting flights out of the U. S. If you have done this route we would like to hear from you.

Jericoacoara- Fernando de Noronha
Hello,
I am going to be visiting Brazil in September and am planning on flying from Manaus up to Fortaleza so that from there I can go to Jericoacoara. I was planning around five days....is this a good amount of time to spend at this place? From there I want to travel as quickly (:-€) as I can to Natal I.e no points of interest along the way so that I can fly to Fernando de Noronha. Am thinking five nights in Fernando de Noronha as I understand it is fairly expensive.
Can anyone who's visited previously comment if this is a decent amount of time to spend in both places and if I have the right idea commute wise? And is it reasonable to leave Jeri in the morning and arrive in Fernando the same night? Or realistically will I have to stop somewhere on the way for a night?
Any tips/advice will be a help.
Many thanks x

12 days in brazil
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips for my upcoming trip to Brazil?
I am going to have 12 days in Brazil at the beginning of September. I will be flying in and out of Rio and I was thinking of going to iguazu falls, the pantanal and spending a few days on the beaches around Salvador.
Is this possible in 12 days? We can afford 1 or 2 internal flights.
How do we go about organising the pantanal trip -I am happy to book it when we are there but is there a specific town that we should go to to arrange it or should we book from Rio?
If anyone has any tips or suggestions I would really appreciate it!
Thanks
Meg

Carnival in rio
Hi,
Me and a friend are thinking of heading to RIo for the carnival in Feb 2014,we want to stay there for roughly a week.
We have an additional 3 weeks of travelling either before or after carnival....my question is we don't know whether to do rio and the Amazon or whether to do rio...Sao paolo....and macchu picchu.however we've heard feb/march isn't a great time to do the inca trail.
I'll be meeting her in SA from Perth and she'll be coming from Dublin.
We don't know which way to go without missing carnival.
Any advice would be appreciated :)

4 weeks trip - some suggestions ?
I'm planning a 4 weeks trip to Brazil, July / August.
I have been there 12 years ago (Cuiaba / Pantanal, Salvador (during Carnival), Rio, Florianopolis). Now I will go with my girlfriend, who was never there.
We will visit someone in Sao Paulo and want to include Rio and the Amazonas jungle. We do NOT want to "rush thru" but stay a few days at every place. So we have time left for one or maximum two spots. Large distances we will fly.
My questions are:
(1) Salvador de Bahia was beautiful, but is there an alternative, that I don't know yet?
(2) Is it worth to visit Iguazu Falls? Sounds like a silly question, but we have seen the Niagara Falls and the Victioria Falls in Africa. If Iguazu is not SO much different, we might skip it.
(3) We are considering two or three days at Ilha Grande / Paraty, seems like a nice stop between Sao Paulo and Rio. How is the weather in ...

Changing Azul flight
Hi all,
I booked a flight with Azul from Campo Grande to Rio back in March for May 22nd that I want to change to just 24 hours earlier. I asked them if it was possible but unfortunately not without extortionate fees, which result in me spending so much more than I paid for the ticket.
Does anyone know whether it is possible to go to the airport and 'convince' them to let me on an earlier flight? I have heard people having success with other airlines, but I am not sure what Azul are like. If it is not possible to change for free, I will prefer to wait for my scheduled flight.
Thank you in advance

Obtaining visa/immunizations in Peru (US citizen)
Hello,
I will be leaving to South America in 1 week visiting Columbia - Ecuador - Peru - Brazil. I was wondering if anyone has any experience w/ obtaining a Brazil visa while in Peru? To be honest, I am a bit worried about handing over my passport. I hear the process takes just a few days. Is it as easy as it sounds? I also know I need to get a yellow fever vaccination before I go to Brazil. I have never done this abroad before. Are there travel clinics anyone can recommend in Peru? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

Iguazu Falls and Rio in 7-10 days!?!
Yes...yes...I know, it is almost impossible to even think of doing the Iguaçu Falls and Rio in 7 days.....but that is all the time I have and I would like to definitely see these two places. Hence, that is why I am posting, in hopes to get some good expert advice and feedback from you all as to the best way to go about doing this. We will be flying down this July and I am thinking of actually flying into Buenos Aires as it's closer to the Falls and then catch a jumper flight to the Falls. Spend a couple of days there and then fly on to Rio for the remainder of our trip and fly back to the states out of Rio. I am not so much interested in the beach scene as I actually live in the tropics, plus I am guessing July will be chilly in Brazil. The only two MUST see items on our agenda are the Falls and the Christ Statue in Rio....other than that we are pretty flexible and open to whatev... more »
