Brazil Frequently Asked Questions
For the benefit of everyone dropping by the Brazil branch for the first time, please read this FAQ first. And I hope there can be some sort of way to moderate the thread to keep it updated and clean. I know there are some AWESOME regular contributors here who enjoy giving advice; I feel this thread can really help to condense the information available.
I'll go first, with some general thoughts from the South America FAQ. Many thank to Apollo for starting that thread and for a great idea. Hopefully we can have a similar thread for Brazil.
1) Use the "Search" function to find out if someone has already asked your question. Many questions have already been asked before, and regular contributors to the forum get tired of answering the same thing over and over again.
2) Read a few pages of posts. The most frequent...

Job Offer Cusco
Hi,
I'm not sure what the etiquette regarding this is on the forums but if anybody is planning in staying in Cusco for a few weeks/months and wants a job in a new bar that has just opened here then contact me. I'm the manager and we need people that speak English (high season is coming) and preferably Spanish too although we already have the Spanish part covered with the rest of the staff (all Latino). The Facebook page for the bar is:
https://www.facebook.com/Hyqnotiqcusco?fref=ts
As I said, if you're interested let me know!
Cheers
Patrick

Bus from Posadas to Buenos Aires
We will be in Misiones Province in the first part of August, and we were expecting to take the bus from Posadas to Buenos Aires. Searching the internet shows some schedules and fares for BA to Posadas, but not the other way around.
I just want to confirm that there are buses from Posadas to Buenos Aires. Does anyone have experience with this? I know, it's probably silly, but since I can't seem to find reliable info I just want to be sure.
If anyone does have experience with this, can we only buy the ticket at the terminal in Posadas? How early can we buy our tickets?
This is aside from the bus strike. Since we're going in August, we're just hoping it will be settled by then.

First time backpacking advice.
Hi everyone,
My friend and I are planning on spending 40 days backpacking through Colombia, Equador, peru and Bolivia. We are gonna have a loose itinerary and mostly make it up as we go, with the exception of hiking the incan trail. I've never backpacked in another country before so I'd like some advice.
1. Route: What would be the ideal? we were thinking of landing in Cartagena, Colombia and working our way south to Bolivia and bussing back up around day 36 to catch our return flight home. Is this possible in 40 days?
2. Cost: How much do you think it would cost not including flight? We were hoping to keep it around $3000, including the $500 incan trail hike.
3.Accomodation: We will be travelling sept 18- oct 28. How hard is it to find a hostel to stay in the day you arrive in a new city? Should we always be calling in advance?
Any info you guys have is much appreciated.

Anybody interested in renting a 4x4 for Lauca?
Hi I'm looking for travel companions to rent a 4x4/ catch a lift with and go into Parque Nacional Lauca independently. I'm currently in Iquique and will be travelling to Arica this Thursday so would be ready to head into Lauca on Saturday or Sunday at the earliest, but am flexible with timings. Ideally I'd like to head to Putre on public transport and rent a car there once acclimatised - am currently looking into whether this is in fact possible.
Plan after Lauca is to head into Bolivia. I'm a 32 year old female and speak fluent Spanish.
Look forward to hearing from you!

Where to spend my last 4 days in Brazil
Hi all, I realize this is a highly subjective question but here goes anyways... I will be in Brazil for a couple weeks the beginning of Brazil visiting a friend. The first part of the trip is all arranged--we are going to Sao Paulo, Rio, and Iguacu--but i get to pick the last destination (!). With so many amazing places to visit it is very hard to decide!
So, i am looking at:
The Panatal and/or Bonito (both or one over the other?)
Praia de Pipa
Salvador
The Amazon
or?
Thus far leaning towards the Panatal and/or Bonito or Praia da Pipa. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Malaria & Yellow Fever Vaccine Advice
Hi all- I will be backpacking around Peru and Bolivia this summer (perhaps Columbia and Ecuador as well). I have done a bit of research about what vaccines I should get before leaving, and am unsure about yellow fever & malaria. I will be traveling in places that the CDC considers to be a "moderate" risk for these diseases (I will be all over both countries, not just sticking to the coast). My question is this- do I blow the $400 to get vaccinated for both, take preventative medication, or just stick to bug spray? Advice would be much, much appreciated! Thanks, Caroline

Mindo lodge - Sachatamia lodge or El monte?? or other suggestions.
hey everyone,
Thinking of spending 2 nights in Mindo at a lodge, just wondering if anyone has stayed at Sachatamia or el monte? what did you think?
Also I've noticed that most of the lodges only provide breakfast included in the nightly rate. How much generally extra does it cost for lunch and dinner?
Any other recommended lodges?
Thanks
Janelle

looking for trekking companion in Ecuadorean Central Highlands
I want to hike from Atillo to Achupallas and then connect that up with the Ecudorean Inca Trail. I'm OK with doing it alone (I'm not intending to go with a guide) but I would be happy to have company, too. If anyone is interested in doing this trek and is already in the area (because I want to start in the next few days) I would love to hear from you...
I have cooking gear but only a one person tent so you would need a tent and whatever else... Be aware that it's pretty wet at this time of year.
Post a message if you are interested and we can get in touch.

Puno -- Homestay on Taquile and back to Cusco on my own
Hello fellow travelers
I would like to travel from Puno with my family and do a homestay on Taquile on Lake Titicaca, hopefully with a brief stop at los Uros.
I have heard/read you can just wander to the docks at Puno in the morning and find a boat out and once on the island you can easily find a local family to stay with for the evening.
My question is how to figure out the return from Taquile to Puno the next day and to coordinate the leg from Puno to Cusco the next afternoon.
Has anyone done this WITHOUT a professional tour group that could help me out with this.
We are interested in combi/collectivo travel if possible or local buses.
We would prefer to give our money directly to the boat captain or the local families so they can benefit.
Thanks to the community for all the great postings so far.

Caño Cristales - independently or tour?
Hi all,
I'm planning a trip to Caño Cristales next week and I'm trying to work out the comparative prices of going independently or with a tour, taking into account that I'm travelling alone. I'd rather go independently to have flexibility, but not if it ends up costing a lot more!
Having looked at some of the other threads on this site, it seems like it's fairly straightforward to find a guide, but it seems like might be expensive once you include transport around the park. Does anyone know how much it would cost? I've read elsewhere that another otion is it to tag onto another tour group, but considering I'll be going midweek and not in peak season, is this realistic?
The tour I have seen includes flights, hotel, transport, guides and food for 4 days for about 1,.240,000 pesos, which seems pretty reasonable considering the flights alone are 328,000 pesos.
Also, I know th...

The strikes - La Paz
Hi all
Currently in Salta, Argentina. After a frustrating time being completely stuck in Buenos Aires during the bus strikes earlier this month (yes I know there are worse places to be stuck!), I'm now monitoring the situation in other countries along our trip.
Bolivia is next. We are going to work our way towards La Paz shortly.
Conflicting news reports have used terms from "some big disruptions" to the city being "paralysed".
For anyone there (or who knows anyone there) - which is more accurate as to the current situation.
Is it impossible to get in and out at the moment? If so are many restaurants, shops and the like closed? Is if reasonable safe?
I'm monitoring the news daily, but anyone with direct experience and knowledge please let me know what it is actually like for a traveler on the ground there at the moment?
Also if it applies to anywhere else we are ...
