Is Hella a usable base for exploring South Iceland?

Hiya,

A friend and I are planning a 5 day trip to Iceland in January to, hopefully, see the Northern Lights. We were planning on staying in Hella and are now trying to organise our itinerary for the day times.

We're hiring a car and were wondering whether Hella would be a reasonable base to still be able to drive to see glaciers, geysers, volcanic beaches, thermal springs . . . general walking with some good scenery. Any suggestions/opinions would be very welcome!

Cheers

The two top things to do on the Faeroes are.....

..........take the boat ride to Westmanna bird cliffs, and walk across to lake Hvannhagi from Tvoroyri!

Birthday restaurant Copenhagen

Hi, my girlfriend and myself will travel to Scandinavia by the end of the month.
While we are in Copenhagen, she will turn 30. A good opportunity to find an memorable restaurant. Nothing too fancy but we like organic/biologic (and I am a vegetarian). Who has a tip for a restaurant in central Copenhagen?
thanks!

Is it good to spend Christmas in Iceland?

I live in Hong Kong. I have not got any white Christmas. Is it a good decision to spend my first white Christmas in Iceland? Will all houses and streets be decorated by christmas light? Any Christmas market? Will all shops or other tourist attractions be closed during Christmas period? Which Scandinavian country is the best country to spend Christmas holiday?

Travelbuddy/carpool

Hey

I will be in Iceland 13-27 June and am considering renting a car for the second half of my stay (going hiking the first half)

I am keen on finding somebody (one person or more) to share costs with while exploring the Westfjords between 21-26th of June. Don't want to spend too much in the car driving around and is therefore looking on concentrating on the Westfjords (and whatever is in between there and Reykjavik), stopping over and do smaller excursions for the day.

I will be bringing all my camping equipment for the hike and is planning to use it as well while driving around (keep costs down and spend more time on the countryside). I don't have a solid plan but have a few desires...would like to stop at Dynjandifoss, see puffins at Latrabjarg, stop by Hraunfoss and/or Gullfors, maybe spend some time driving around the sights around Reykjavik...nothing is set in stone and... more »

Question About Prohibited Items Coming into Iceland

The Iceland Customs website states the following:

"Among articles which are prohibited from importation are the following types of products:
Uncooked meat and various meat products e.g. dried meat, uncooked smoked ham, bacon, saddle of pork, smoked uncooked sausages (e.g. salami), uncooked poultry etc. Meat and meat products have to be fully cooked in order to be allowed into the country."

Sounds like I can't bring beef jerky into the country for my hiking trip. What about dehydrated meals that contain meat? Like beef stroganoff, chicken and rice, etc.? Thanks!

Travel companion for campin, hitchHiking Finland, Norw, Sweden Jun 23-Jul 6

Dear fellow travelers

I want to go from St. Petersburgh to Hamburg by landway between June 23 and July 6! Important point to pass is the "Nordkapp". In total the journey is 4000km and 50 hours driving, I think at least 5 travel days. I plan to always stop and hike somewhere, camp in the mountains/fjords using the allemannsretten which allows free camping everywhere!

I am looking for any kind of travel companion. If you happen to travel/live somewhere there please feel free to contact me. I hope my time is enough to see some of the interesting sights!

Hope to hear from you,
-Stefan

Advice needed on cash passport / travel card for Scandi and Iceland

Hi!

Heading to Iceland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark later this year for 6 weeks.

The Aussie dollar is starting to go bad, so would love to lock in some currency now, but don't want to be carrying large amounts of cash with us...

I really like the look of the travel cards or cash passports which are becoming common, however I've yet to find one which allows me to preload Scandinavian currencies...

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to lock in an exchange rate now?

Thanks!
Jon

New Years Eve in Iceland

Are we brave or mad to try Iceland for new years eve this year. Is it impossible to visit at that time of the year because of the cold, snow etc? Hope to spend a week and maybe do some of the ring road. Have heard random reports that NYE is great there. After a hot Australian christmas, it will be different. Is there anything to do or is it all too cold/hard.

Fjord Kayaking

Hey everybody,

I'm interested in going kayaking in the Nærøyfjord, but I want to know a few things prior to deciding whether I want this holiday or not.

Firstly, like the know if anyone has undertaken this activity? If so was it a good experience and was it fun? Also my holiday being ecotourism based, would you classify this activity as an ecotourism activity and why?

I know this may be a bit to ask for, but if anyone could answer my questions it would be greatly appreciated. Being from Australia, I'd like to get the best ecotourism experience with my money.

Thanks for your time!
