Iceland Trip Report July 2012
t took me awhile to post this but here is a trip report from our visit to Iceland in July of 2012. We rented an R.V. and did the Ring Road in two weeks. Had a great time and can't wait to go back soon. Highlights for me were seeing the puffins on Papey Island, hiking on Svinafellsjokull Glacier, visiting the eerie Leirhnjukur Lava Fields, and swimming in the many outdoor heated public pools scattered throughout Iceland. Thanks to all the posters here for helpful tips in planning our trip
Here is the link to the report with photos:

Iceland in Early May
I'm travelling to Iceland with a few friends in early May for about a week. We haven't set an itinerary yet, but we're looking for some advice on where we should go, and what should we do.
Is it better to rent a car or go on an organized tour.
Also, if anyone is looking for a few travel partners, let me know.
Any other tips and recommendations would also be greatly appreciated.
Seeing the northern lights on a budget?
Hi everyone,
I'm currently on exchange in Paris and VERY keen to head up north to catch a glimpse of the northern lights...
We've only got three days, so I'm aware I might not get lucky, but where would be our best bet?
Budget is a huge factor and we're looking to do it as cheaply as possible.
Ideas as to where to go, where to stay, how to get there etc would be very much appreciated!
Thanks, Joely

Bus from Kiruna Train Station to Ice Hotel
Hello,
I'll be heading to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjarvi next month and getting to Kiruna at 12PM via the overnight SJ Train from Stockholm. I'd like to take the bus from Kiruna to Jukkasjarvi. Has anyone done this? I've checked out http://www.ltnbd.se/index.php?iso=en and it seems straightforward enough, but I wanted to see if anyone here as any experience taking the 501 bus. Any tips for a first timer?
If so, how close is the bus station to the train station? How much does the bus cost? Do they take credit cards or just Krona? I believe Jukkasjärvi kyrkan (Kiruna kn) is the stop closest to the Ice Hotel, correct?
Any help/guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Car Rental - Book in advance?
I am going to Reykjavik in Mid march. I am planning to rent car for 3-4 days. I am trying to keep my itinerary flexible so thinking of renting car there. Will it be significantly expensive if I book there in 1-2 days in advance?

Hike for Mid-August - Not Laugavegurinn
Don't get me wrong, I want to do this hike more than anything, but from what I can tell, mid-august is going to be a very busy time for that route and I'd prefer to experience it in a little more solitary conditions. Can anyone recommend something similar, but that may not be so well traveled? I only have a week unfortunately, so something in the 2-3 day range would be preferable.

Faroe Islands
Faroe Islands in Spring time?
Hello,
I looked at weather websites, but can someone give me first-hand experience for the weather on the Faroe Islands in March or April? At the moment there seems to be a lot of mist. Does it hang over all the islands for weeks and weeks or isn't it quite that bad? What about the potential rain intensity? Thanks a lot,

2 weeks
Hi all,
We (family of 4 -- w 2 younger kids) are considering 2 weeks in Iceland this summer. Rather than driving the ring road we would prefer basing ourselves in 2 or 3 areas as a base for 5 to 7 days and the doing trips from a home base. Does anyone have any recommendations on what areas would make a good base to explore from? We'd obviously like to see the sites but are also interested in doing some hiking. Any suggestions would be appreciated just to help kick off our planning.
Thanks in advance!

Money / suggestions
Hello
I am going to Stockholm for a few days over Easter. I am struggling to find out how much I should budget.
For example: On average how much should I expect to pay for a beer? for lunch of juice and a sandwich in a cafe?
Also if you have been to/lived in Stockholm any suggestions would be appreciated, the type of place you would go to and then take your friend if they were visiting. I love to check out some sport and live music too.
Probably difficult questions to answer so thanks for your help.

Actual costs of food in Iceland
I'm not sure if this post is going to be repeated, but it hasn't appeared as yet!
I was just wondering if anyone could give actual food costs buying from a supermarket in Iceland? I am planning a trip in early May, camping and hiring a car. I have read that Bonus and Netto are the cheapest supermarkets, but could anyone provide a real time approximate price of basic food stuffs ie a bag of pasta, tin of tomatoes, bag of teabags, loaf of bread etc? It would be really useful for budgetting. In addition, how much does a very cheap bottle of booze from the government shops cost - not at all as important, but just to know!
Many thanks for any help.

Actual costs of food in Iceland
I am planning a trip to Iceland in early May, planning to hire a car and camp. I just wanted to know actual costs of food from Supermarkets. I have read that Bonus and Netto are the cheapest, but I would love to know actual costs of basic items such as a bag of pasta, a tin of tomatoes, a loaf of bread, tea bags etc. Are prices really that high for basic items? Sorry for such a specific question, but rather than "relative to other country" answers, I would really appreciate someone just giving an approximate cost. I know it seems a minor consideration in calculating the cost of the holiday, but it would be great to get some real time answers. In addition, how much is booze from the state shops - not such a consideration at all, but just as an added thought!
Many thanks, and sorry for being very specific.
