Sleeping in railway station...

Dear travellers, i am travelling to Finland in 20th Jul., flight from Athens to Helsinki and arriving to Helsinki at 00:45 local time. I want to travel to Tampere the same day but the first train to Tampere is at 07.10 the morning. I must waiting somewhere for about 5 hours to take the first train to Tampere.
Have you any ideas where can i stay for 5 hours and have a little sleep? Can i stay in the railway station? It is somewhere else that i can stay temporary for 5 hours?
Thank you all of you travellers..

Mosquitoes in Lapland

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Lapland in mid-July.

Is this the worst time for mosquitoes? Also, is there any way to combat the mosquitoes?

Thanks

Helsinki views

Is the tower of the Olympic Stadium worth a visit?

Are there any better panorama views somewhere else?

Thanks.

I will be travelling to Finland in July & am looking for any recommendations on events, sights, anything not to be missed! Also, is renting a car the way to see the country? Or is public transportation a good option? I want to see the coastal areas & maybe venture into the Lakeland region. I will be travelling with two older ladies who do not get around too well.. any suggestions/information is so appreciated!!!
Also, what is the mosquito situation the last two weeks in July?

Hi There,
I am planning to visit Finland from 29/5 to 6/6 with this itinerary,

Spend rest of the day in Rovaniemi, overnight here
Next day hire a car in Rovaniemi to do the following itinerary, Rovaniemi -> Sodankyla (overnight here) next day Sodankyla->Ivalo->Inari, visiting Lemmenjoki National Park-> back to Inari to overnight there.
next day, Inari to Rovaniemi, return the car and take the night train to Helsinki arriving following day early in the morning able to catch train to St. Petersburg.
Can anyone share experience in this itinerary? Places to be visited or an alternative itinerary would be greatly appreciated as well.

Helsinki 17hr Stopover

Hi,

On the 14th of December I have a 17 hour stopover in Helsinki. I arrive at awkward times as well, at something like 23:00 and leave at 16:00 the following day.

Just wondering on what I should do, the choices I can think of are:

1. Stay at the airport for 17hours
2. Stay at an airport hotel for more comfort - I've looked online and there is one for 91 euros
3. Take a taxi into town, stay in a hostel and then look around town in the morning

The third option is probably going to cost a fortune for a taxi at that time and I'm also aware that there probably isn't much daylight at that time of year (I'm guessing maybe two hours).

Does anyone have any advise on what they'd do in this situation?

Helsinki for 3 days

Hello,
I'm looking for ideas on what to do in Helsinki for 3 days in april. I am a student and I would like to have some fun, but I'm interesed also in some sight seeing,...maybe even some museums if they are interesting and not too expensive.
Also, what do you think the money needed for 3 days of cheap sleeping and eating + fees, is?
Thanks

Any Finnish speakers out there?

My (Polish) neighbour asked me if I could help her out; she wants to get this document translated (yes, we've put it through google translate but prefer a more accurate version if poss). It relates to some insurance that she might be due for her late husband who worked for a brief period in Finland some years ago. If anyone could translate it for me into English, that would be great, if anyone can translate it directly into Polish, that would be even better!! as it would save me having to do so :)
She is happy to have this document on this forum as her personal details have been left out.

Thanks for any help. I think she thinks that as an Irish/ English person living in Poland, ie as a foreigner, I should have fewer problems than her to get it translated!

Seeing the northern lights in northern Finland

Hi,
I arrive in Helsinki on March 20th and will spend 2 days there. I then plan on travelling north to Rovaniemi on train and from there spend 4 days around lapland hoping to catch a glimpse and take a photo of the northern lights.

Can anyone recommend an area which is more favorable to seeing them? Really I am only passing through Finland on my way to Russia, where I head to Murmansk initially, so it would be ideal if there was a place not far from the Russian border and/or well connected where I could hang around for a few days in the hope of seeing them.

The town of Ivalo seems to have a bus service to Murmansk, so somewhere close by could be ideal. I understand Ivalo hasn´t much for the tourist to see, but the towns of Inari and Saariselkä seem to offer more. I´m not all that bothered about having things to do during the day. My main aim is to photograph the northern light... more »

Hiking the Karunkhierros and getting there!!!

Hi

I would like to do this alone and in its entirety ... would anyone be able to offer tips on where might be a good place to stay, perhaps halfway for a day or two?

I know there are free cabins at the nd of the day but am looking to enjoy a week doing this so would like to relax halfway through the hike.

Also, what is the best way to get to the Northernmost part of the hike? Is it by train from Helsinki to Oulu and then by bus to the route?

Many thanks for any help ...

How to sell in Finland

I'll have some guidebooks to offload during my trip through Finland. Where can I advertise them free of charge on a Finnish website? I'm looking for an equivalent of Gumtree in Helsinki, Oulu and Rovaniemi.
