had a spur of the moment decision to fly to Helsinki after Christmas. I have been there before, yet never for NYE - anything special I should be aware of? fireworks along the Esplanadi and around Senate's Square? besides: any tips on nice restaurants/bistros in general (i.e. not alone NYE)? my guidebook is getting old, thus recommendations would be welcome (budget: low-medium). finally, any recommendations for an area for hikes/walks in the snow? Suomenlinna looks obvious, what else is easily accessible by public transport, perhaps there are some pleasant paths along the bays towards Otaniemi? or even further away? I know these are some pretty vague questions, so thanks to anyone who's taking their time to reply. note: I'm leaving on the 28th and probably won't check this thread again as long as I'm in Finland, so no need to post after that date ;-)
again: thanks, and Merry Christmas!

Will be traveling to Europe next year but have no idea what countries yet. I want to learn a little bit of a language that is widely spoken throughout Europe. I speak English only. :-( Would it be best to learn Italian, Spanish, French? I've talked with a few travellers who said English is commonly spoken in the larger cities. But I would love to be able to communicate with people on a more personal basis in another language. Hope this makes sense.
Thanks!

Got a major problem.
I'm a swedish citizen, travelling from Copenhagen to Münich by train.
I've lost my brain and forgot my passport in a place where I can't get hold of it before I go.
Do they regularly check passports on the over-night trains?
Thanks!

We, from Australia, plan to travel on one of the boats cruising along the fjords of Norway.
Could anybody help with recommendations of the Hurtigruten or any other boats travelling from Bergen?
Many thanks

Hi all,
I am trying to tag (= identify) all my pictures from a 5 weeks long trip through Iceland. There is one I cannot properly locate: a memorial with several dozens white crosses, along the ring road. It was somewhere between Selfoss and Borgarnes. But where exactly, and what was the memorial for ?
Here is the picture on my cousin's website: http://www.upsilon.ch/en/viewimage.php?imgid=3971
Thx

Hi All,
my name is John i'm 23 years old from Tasmania, Australia
I'll be travelling alone to Helsinki from Australia on the 18'th and arriving in Helsinki for the 19'th
I'm looking to travel around, do some sight seeing and the usual things! but would prefer to meet and be around people of my age preferably Finns.
I would be most interested in doing structured / guided tours with groups, such as adventure tours and other activities.
Unfortunately no Contiki tours or Top Deck tours seem to operate out of Helsinki..
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
John

I was talking to this Swede in a bar in the Philippines last night.
the conversation got round to Norwegians and how so many of them seem to be coming here these days and throwing their money at everything, especially if it's about 20, female, and wearing a short skirt.
they seem to have loads of dosh but he said that compared to Sweden, the infrastructure, and especially the roads, are crap.
is this true?

Hi! I'm an American living in Iceland in a honey of a flat--in the Vesturbaer neighborhood of Reykjavik (an old suburb, now pretty much considered to be part of the downtown area) right on the sea with views of the Reykjanes peninsula. Anyway, I have to go home unexpectedly from December 21 til January 4. If you are coming to Reykjavik during that time and are interested in staying at my place, send me an email at caitlin.meleney@gmail.com.

Hi everybody,
I have decided to spend a weekend somewhere ''fantastic'' instead of sitting and itching on the sofa. I might be impolite to say that but spending the whole 48 hours doing nothing but watching tv and reading is a spreading sickness of all older travelers, you get stuck in and become lazier; change your preferences and live completely lost weekends. This time no; I will be the host to my wife and walk/window-shop/xmass shop/dine/enjoy good music/watch dance in beatifull and fantastic Stockholm! and thats where you Stockholmers come into the picture! I have booked Electra (at royal opera), Ek, Laguan & Baryshnikov(at Dancenhus) but I have 3 Nights to dine 3 full days to walk around needing great ideas. As it is in my home town the best places known by locals only. Can yu help me to organize fantastic weekend for us,the 60 years oldies, feeling 40. Do you recomend any pla...

I'm planning to vist friends in Tromso, Norway for a few days in Feb 2010. As it takes 2 flight legs with Norwegian Airlines in each direction from / to London Gatwick, via Oslo, extra costs for taking my own nordic skis are quite high. So, I'm thinking about taking my own boots (leather with three holes for pins on skis) and hiring / borrowing nordic skis for a day or two. I've found this: "Cycle and ski hire, Intersport Sportshuset, Storgata 87, phone +47 77 66 11 00." at http://www.destinasjontromso.no/english/useful_info_faq.html but can't search any Norwegian language sites very well. If anyone can help with any other hire places and an idea of costs, that would be much appreciated. Obviously, I've asked my friends, too, but perhaps other travellers can help too? Many thanks. more »
