Miss Galaxy 2007 will be held on 4th, 5th and 6th July.
I personally think Miss Galaxy is the most entertaining event in Tonga! I highly recommend visiting the event if you are going to be in Tongatapu during these 3 nights.
Does anyone know whether the Kolovai flying fox population is still protected and in reasonable numbers? Was an observation platform ever built? Is there a good tour operator (someone with good knowledge of flying foxes and their history) taking people there?

Tonga President's XIII v NSW Country U18 - 2nd July (Rugby League)
Tonga National Rugby League U/18 v NSW Country U18 - 5th July
thanks for all the recommendations to previous posts, keep 'em coming!
all that talk about feasts reminds me.. what can 3 vegetarians (dairy but no fish) expect to find on Tongapatu and surrounding islands?!
also can anyone tell me if there is a bank machine in Nuk that accepts Cirrus cards or is it best to arrive with hard cash.
heading to Tonga for just over a week and will probably stay on Tongatapu..
anyone got any advice on good things to do or good places to go/stay, a real nice corner of the island for swimming and snorkelling, and where accomodation is not too pricey..
or would it be a good idea to go to another island not too far from Tongatapu?
anyone who's there at the minute, what's the weather like?!
Tonga plays the Junior All Blacks next weekend (Sat 9th June) at Teufaiva Stadium, Nuku'alofa. My contact in TRFU says it's on at 1330 and tickets can be prebought at ANZ, OSB and presumably the TRFU.
Last major match there, the Tau'uta Reds from Tonga vs Upolu Samoa from Samoa in the Pacific Rugby Cup final, saw only one ticket seller/entrance gate. The young lads milling around outside pulled open other entrances and a large number of people then streamed in without paying!!!! Ahhh that's why we love Tonga.
So if you are in Tonga, I recommend heading to this match....I also recommend paying for the Stadium tickets. But it will be interesting to see what kind of security they have on this time!!!!
Ooops!! Forgot to say in message below re taking books to Tonga that we are in New Plymouth , in the north island of New Zealand. Would courier books to any where in New Zealand and cover any expenses involved in getting them to Ha'apai. We don't want to send them any other way to Tonga as have found that things posted in the past have not made it through.
Looking for someone reliable to take a small parcel of books to a school on the island of Lifuka in the Ha'apai group. The package weighs about 9kg and is the size of a small brief-case. The school is a local boarding school and would be a great way for someone to connect in a meaningful way with the local populace. You'd get a great welcome and a little more out of your trip than the normal superficial look. School is what they call a Middle school- years 5-12. I taught there in the 70's, revisited recently and decided to help out. Would pay for any excess baggage charges. think about it
A friend and I are coming to Tonga for about a week in the first week of July. We are hoping to do some whale watching, check out some of the archaeological sights, snorkelling (not scuba), take in some of the local markets/church services/food, and anything else that people recommend. We are wanting to have a relaxing time although we don’t want to get stuck on a resort where all meals & ‘activities’ etc are provided.
After scouring the lonely planet we are a little overwhelmed with so many islands to choose from! We would like to choose a couple of central locations for 3-4 nights each where we can base ourselves. We are unsure about whether we should book in advance, and if the Heilala Festival will impact on availability. Also is there any info as to what is on where during the festival or should we just arrive & see?!
any suggestions much appreciated... more »
come on, one of you buggers find me a job in Tonga! I want to come back!
tears in eyes.
I am going to spend a few days in Ha'apai, beginning of July. Any suggestions for cheap basic accommodation and how to book it? I tried with tongaholiday.com but after more than a week I did not get any reply to my enquires..
Thanks for the help!
p.s:if you also have any suggestions about what to do feel free to give advise!!
Every year, Tongans in Tonga and from overseas enjoy their annual church conference. Whoever visited Tonga in May or June might have seen these festivities.
Church of Tonga Hou'eiki congregation has been having their annual church conference, only a block away from my house for the past 10 days. Beating of Tongan drums begins even before 7 am in the morning everyday (except Sunday), and they have feasts once in the morning and once in the evening. In most cases, foreign passersby are invited to the feast and even given more food to take back.
Their traditional dances are so genuine and verses of songs and choreography are created only for that occasion. The congregation are dressed in a tradition dance constumes, strolling around.
It's so Tongan! I just love them.
This year, the Free Weslyan Church of Tonga, the largest congregation in Tonga, will have... more »
