Hi - I'm going on a 10 day trip with my wife to either New Caledonia or Vanuatu; both seem fantastic. I would love to know if anyone has been to both and what is better for a trip of this duration. Vanuatu seems very hard to travel around (several flights needed). thanks
I plan on visiting a friend in Malekula, Vanuatu in October. He said to fly to Norsup. I can leave from either Sydney or Brisbane, Australia, or from Auckland New Zealand. It looks like the most flights are between Sydney and Port Vila, and from Port Vila I'd have to fly to Norsup.
I'm wondering how much time I'll need in either Sydney, Brisbane, or Auckland to get through customs. I'm wondering if I'll be able to make it to Port Vila the same day I get into Australia or New Zealand, or if I should just plan on staying the night.
Me and a group of mates are heading to fiji for a wedding in early-mid april, and we have decided to make a bit of a surf trip out of it. We are looking at going down south to Sigatoka and staying at Club Masa, but I can not find a website and also am having troubles finding a phone number. I have also read people say that the road there is closed, there's no power etc, and have no idea how long ago these were written. So was wondering if:
2. has anyone stayed there and can give some feedback on what it was like. me and all my mate can rough it, definitely doesn't bother us, but we need power to charge cameras and laptops as may be doing an article for a surfing magazine there and don't want to run out of camera charge!
3. does anyone know what surf conditions are normally like that time of ye... more »
Hello - Trying to plan a trip to the Marquesas and Australs (nearly 2 weeks total) and wondering what the best time of year is for less clouds and rain, more sun. I looked at the monthly rain averages and they appear to say October is the least rainy month. Is it usually sunny in July like in the Society islands or is October also nice? I would especially prefer dry weather on the Marquesas as I've heard road and hiking tracks can be a muddy mess in rain.
Just wondering if others have any "on the ground" information as climate information for these island groups is limited.
A quick question, which islands/areas have the best weather in late March? It's the only week we have to get away, and i'd prefer not to be rained out the whole time, but while various forums seem to say March is great in eg. Fiji, weather charts also seem to show high rainfall. I'm confused!
We're considering Fiji/Vanuatu (flying from Melbourne, so looking for somewhere closeish as we have such a short time).
Can anyone advise on the road condition of the Port Moresby - Kokoda - Popondetta road? I presume it is unsealed for most of the way and varies in condition between seasons. Of course, I am assuming there is actually a road on the Port Moresby to Kokoda section that is separate from or intersects with the Kokoda trail, but I may be very mistaken!
Also, are there any maps that anyone can recommend?
Any info appreciated thanks.
Planning a short vacay to Palau in about 3 weeks & finding info on basic costs have been difficult. Fully aware that Palau is pricey but still trying to do it on a budget.Such as, would it be cheaper to buy booze from duty free on the way in, or wait & get the local rum (?). Any info about average food & alcohol costs would be appreciated!!!
Hard to get current accurate info and am supposed to be flying in to Nadi from LA tomorrow. Is there anyone there on the ground who can report a bit about whether hotels are open, ferries to the Yasawas are running, roads east on Viti Levu are open etc? Trying to figure out whether to try and cancel the trip. Not sure how badly everything is affected, or how long it will take for things to get back to normal...
We have booked a dive trip for the end of March and understand that we cannot wear sunglasses or hats. Is this for both men and women. Can anyone explain the reasoning for this? Our glasses darken with the sunshine and I don't have any others and I am basically blind without the glasses. Are women required to wear skirts when in the towns and villages, or are capris OK as long as they are below the knees? What are the requirements for men? Are there anyother dress requirements we need to know about? It is not a problem with complying, but I just want to be clear on when and where the dress code is expected. Thank you.
Does anybody know about Ralph Stuttgen (or Stüttgen or Stuttgens or whatever)?
He provided a great base for exploration near Wewak, PNG. I stayed with him in 1996. In google I can find a reference dated 2002. Is he still alive? Does he still provide accommodation for travellers? Thanks for any hints.
I've been using this forum and it's grate! thank you!
I do have one small question about PNG.
I plan to enter PNG by flight from Crains.
The flight i want lands in POM at 13:25, but the continue flight i want to take to Mt Hegan leaves at 14:30. is that enough time? will i make it for my next flight?
I've been recommended to ask that my luggage will be sent all the way to Mt Hegan, but it is with 2 different airlines (first with Airniugini and second with Airlines PNG), so it may not be possible... and i do not want to spend any time in Port Moresby.
dose anyone have any experience in POM airport? any chance i make it?
I also posted a separate question about it because it regards Indonesia, but it has to do with PNG to, so i'll add it here to...
Once i'm in Indo, i'm thinking of visiting East Timor, but because i leave Indo i will need a new visa (which takes about a w... more »
My daughter is considering living and teaching in the Marshall Islands for a year. I've read that the islands are the most nuclearly contaminated islands in the world. How safe is it there? What provisions have been made to safeguard the population? Thanks you much for your input.
Well, how can i put this shortly? I am needing to change my life: get away from the place i live in, being in less stress, to stop being inserted in a society that measures the level of your success, and consequently, the oppotunities of integration, by the size of the house you buy and the tv you put inside, by how expensive your car is... It's not that i don't fit in... it's just that i don't like it 'cause human being are so much more than that.
I am thinking about planning a trip do the Pacific Islands... and, who knows, stop by at one place and i would like to know your oppinions about it. I would love to keep doing what i do here, professionaly (i'm a vet). I love volunteer work but i would have to earn some money to pay my dues... But it's not inflexible... i can do something else.
So, to the ones who live in these places or the ones who've lived there or the ones who ... more »
