Welcome to the branch, which will take you to some of the most beautiful paradise islands on earth, some of the best beaches and some of the best dive sites...
This branch covers the Pacific Islands as well as Papua New Guinea, often referred to as PNG. Please read this thread to find the answers to common questions, and ways to find solutions fast.
THIS BRANCH DOES NOT COVER AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND; please post your questions on the AUS & NZ branch.
For questions related to Hawaii, you might also want to check out the USA branch. And as quite a few people visit the South Pacific for scuba diving, also check out the <a target=new...

I am on my way to the South Pacific, most likely in April or May, for a 1-2 month Dive/snorkel/travel trip. My destinations have not been solidified but so far I'm thinking: Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, PNG and maybe the Solomon Islands for a one week live-abord dive trip. I have no budget restrictions. Can anyone make any suggestions for live-aboards for a 1 week dive trip? Where and why do you suggest where you have suggested? Anything I need to know or should know about diving in that part of the world? Are any of the places I mentioned so similar that i may eliminate some? If so, which? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I know that you guys were upset about Survivor Samoa, but anyway: does anyone here know where the next Survivor (US version) is being played out? Jeff only announced " an island deep in the South Pacific".

My wife and I (late 20's) are considering flying to Fiji in early January. We may travel around Indonesia, Australia, or elsewhere from there, or we may stay in Fiji for a while.
We love tropical places, and we've been to Panama, Costa Rica, Brazil (Floripa so maybe sub-tropical), Mexico, Hawaii, and Australia (no further north than the Whitsundays though so not really tropical). How does Fiji compare to these places as far as the vibe from the people, the beach, the jungle, and the ocean?
I read on the Lonely Planet Fiji page that the political situation could become troublesome?
Is it a good season?

Hi,
My friend and I are hoping to go to Fiji next year when we are in Australia. We have been reading up about it and the Lomoiviti group looks far more interesting than the more popular Yasawas Group. We are not big on drinking or partying, and it seems that certain parts of Fiji are popular because of this! We are looking for interesting towns, beautiful beaches and maybe some hiking and diving! But we are on a tiny budget... but luckily, we want to keep accommodation basic anyway (no fancy hotels!)
Our main questions are:
Is Yasawas area as bad as it sounds (busy beaches, lots of tourists and partying)?
And is the transport around the Lomitivi group that hard? Because if it isn't....then I think our decision is already made! However we cant find much info on this and are not sure how easy it will be.
We have thought about spending around 2 weeks here, but we...

Looking to go to guam , palau and saipan in late feb/mar and have been having trouble getting info on the islands. There is not one australian travel company i can find that has brochures on it, and even lonely planet do not publish a guidebook on it..
Does anyone know of any tour companies that I can contact regarding tours? Is there any nice little hotels that arent too expensive to stay at? Is the nightlife/restaurant area in guam all close together , so you can walk around easily. Does anyone know anything about couchsurfing? Is it legitimate or is it some sort of scam?
Cheers

Hi
Looking for opinions/thoughts. I am taking a sabbatical next year and looking at coming to fiji to do some volunteer work with my family (2 adults 2 kids)
The place we have found to work at is in nadi/namaka. Trying to decide if we should work in fiji 2months or 5-6 months, splitting the rest of the time with new zealand and micronesia. I have spent 3-4 months in new zealand (20 years ago) but now with family trying to sort out the best option. Would like to enroll kids in school and rent a place. Is nadi/fiji a place that people would recommend to stay in/live/base out of for weekend trips or better for tourism. Obviously it all depends etc (We live in a small town and travel quite a bit) but have never been there and thought I would inquire. The cultural mix sounds interesting in fiji but maybe that is just "on the cover" Not reallly interested in party beach scene. T...

Hello,
I am doing a photo mission out to Indonesia and would also like to shoot Papa New Guinea....Can't find much info about getting there though....
Has anyone taken the flight from California to PNG or from Indonesia to PNG? Is a visa required? I'll be taking my surfboard along...is there storage at the airport to leave it there while traveling through PNG before heading to INDO?
thanks,
Micah

Just wondered what there is to do in/around Nadi for a day. I arrive in the morning at 10.30am so will probably be ready to head out by noon. From what i've read, there doesn't seem to be much to do/see in Nadi and so I was hoping for some advise of some doable actvities. Is there enough time for a trip to Lautoka? Or are there any other recommended spots to visit?
Thank you

location: Tokelau
Hello!
We are a family from Austria with 2 children (6 and 8 years old) who want to travel to Tokelau next year as part of our world trip. Is there anyone who can has been to Tokelau recently and can tell us about Tokelau in general and if it is a good idea to take children there. Especially: has anyone stayed at the new hotel Te Mahina in Nukunonu? Does anyone have their contact email address? Is there a hotel in Atafu and Fakaofo as well? How is the boat trip from Samoa? How long should we stay?
We are very happy about any kind of information. Thank you very much. L.D.

TC Mick hit the Yasawas yesterday and is continuing through Fiji. Octopus will have to close for 4 days to clear up damage, they lost all trees and had some buildings damaged, but people are OK. Further north on Nacula Blue Lagoon Beach Resort which was to open before Christmas is now having to put off their opening date until January as they clear damage. I imagine that most other resorts in the area are suffering in a similar way.

My husband and I will be traveling for a month with an infant in May/ June 2010.
Since we are first timers in the region, I have a few questions:
1) Which airlines offer inter-island passes from Los Angeles? If you have web site links, please post them.
2) Which islands would you recommend in the mid-range category? I know the French Polynesian islands are prohibitively expensive.
3) Aside from beautiful beaches and scenery, which islands offer culturally interesting sites?
4) We will have 4-6 weeks to travel, so how much time should I budget for each island? I am particularly interested in Fiji and the Cook Islands.

I had a film student as crew sailing across the Pacific last year from Ecuador to Tahiti. He put together some excellent videos for his senior project that I think give a good idea of what it's like to crew on a yacht.
I put them altogether on one page on my blog. Check em out if you would like!
