Welcome to the branch, which will take you to some of the most beautiful paradise islands on earth, some of the best beaches and some of the best dive sites...
This branch covers the Pacific Islands as well as Papua New Guinea, often referred to as PNG. Please read this thread to find the answers to common questions, and ways to find solutions fast.
THIS BRANCH DOES NOT COVER AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND; please post your questions on the AUS & NZ branch.
For questions related to Hawaii, you might also want to check out the USA branch. And as quite a few people visit the South Pacific for scuba diving, also check out the <a target=new...

Please use this thread to add your reports, observations and news from the ground. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this terrible disaster.
There may be a tsunami that has been generated from an 8.3 earthquake just off American Samoa.

I have 3 weeks in PNG. I'm thinking about going to the Solomons, New Britain, and New Ireland, then taking in as much of the main island as possible. Does anyone have thoughts on where and how much time to allocate to each and the boats that travel between the islands? Thank you.

And is march ok weather?

Hi,
we are going to Palau for 1 week. My husband doesn't dive, but I would want to dive there.
What divesites would you recommend there? I am thinking of taking 4-6 dives (I know it is too few in a place like Palau, but I probably won't be able to afford too many).
I am a certified PADI Rescue diver.

I was in American Samoa on Ofu Island when the Tsunami hit. It was one of the most humbling and terrifying things I've ever witnessed. Fortunately, Ofu received minimal damage. Four days after the disaster we were able to make our way over to Lalomanu beach in Independent Samoa where we had stayed previously. The destruction was overwhelming. The survivor stories even more so. Here are photographs from Lalomanu Beach and the stories of some of the survivors. http://www.michaelandersongallery.com/gallery.php?gallery=samoatsunami

I have been trying to get infomation on travelling to Wallis from Fiji. According to the Aircalin website they do fly this route, and it looks like I could even book a direct return from Wallis to Nadi. When however I choose Nadi as the start point of my trip, I cannot book flights to Wallis, but only to Noumea. Does anybody know what options there are?

location: Tonga
Hi all,
I arrive at Tongatapu on December 10th, and leave again at the 16th. I have a bit of trouble of coming op with a rough itinerary, as I'm guessing that Sundays in Tonga are... well... empty. That rules out flying or sailing to or from one of the other islands on that day, so I was thinking of maybe spending Sunday on Eua. Take the ferry on Saturday, fly back on Monday. Would this be a good idea? Does any of you know if, for example, Hideway organises tours on Sunday? Could I paddle my rental bike across the island withour disturbing or offending people? And what would you say - is one full day on Eua enough, or would a second day be just as much fun?
I have been thinking about flying to Ha'apai or Vava'u, but it seems much more expensive, and just quickly go there for some tropical beaches would probably not be worth it for me.

Just left Fiji after an amazing week at the Beachouse. Would have stayed longer but was concerned about the costs after reading various forums. After Australia Fiji is a bargain, we averaged about $60 (Fiji) a day each, including an evening meal and beers. Dorms are $35 and the tent $25 which seems alot, but includes breakfast and an afternoon snack. Add on about $12 for an evening meal and whatever you can drink- beers only $2.50 during happy hour and only $3.50 after. We were getting over $3 to the pound.
Avoid the Nadi downtown packpackers- a depressing place not helped by its aggressive manager. Very noisy during the night and $5 for a small beer!

Hi all,
i have done a little research already, but thought id ask for some advice...
I would like to travel to Tanna with my wife next March/April for, say, 3 or 4 days of snorkelling, relaxing, volcanoing, and basically just enjoying what i hear is a beautiful place! I do not require the most luxurious accommodation, however i would appreciate a fan at night, comfy bed and 3 decent meals a day. I am happy to pay around $70 - $150AUD per night for my accommodation. Do you have any suggestions on a good place to stay on Tanna? Also, do most places offer meals, how much should i budget for meals per day?
Any fair dinkum responses are greatly appreciated,
Regards,

I have never considered Palau a holiday destination, until recently a friend of mine came up with this idea influenced by one of his friends who saw some document somewhere. I have done a quick search on basic facts about the island, but I am not happy with the info by far.
My biggest question so far: Could anyone compare a 1-2 week holiday in Palau to the same time in Thailand or Philippines, which were my originally targeted destinations (already been to Thailand)? What are the price tags on everyday things, food, accommodation, transport. I do not want to go on a super budget holiday, but neither am I willing to spend a bank on this trip.
If anyone has been to both, the Philippines and Palau, can you compare a little? Which one do you prefer and why?
I know this a very general question, but I have to start somewhere.
Thanx!

My partner and I are looking at taking a week, possibly 2 week break in Fiji, in the middle of next year. We have both travelled a fair bit but mostly independent, off the beaten track, 4WD, camping thing. I have never done the holiday in a hotel, beach kind of thing but for once, I want a different kind of holiday and a little bit of luxury (well, relative to camping). We would want somewhere that is nice (not budget basic), fairly relaxed but has opportunities to do activities if we feel like it (we are both outdoor types (walking, canoeing, diving, rockclimbing)) particularly snorkelling and diving, not in a town centre but maybe close by so that we can explore if we feel like it?
I'm horrified at some of the hotel prices but don't know whether this is 'normal' for hotels or just because I'm a cheapskate and used to paying relatively little for campsites!
There seems to be qu...

Hi all,
I was thinking of planning a trip - maybe to the Cooks and Fji in January (to scuba dive and chill out), but I am worried about the weather. Anyone think it would be OK to plan a trip during this time, or should I go elsewhere - as in, different Pacific Islands during this time of year, or somewhere else altogether?
Your thoughts are MUCH appreciated -
THANKS!

I am looking for a good backpacker place in Gaum. Any good ideas anyone...?
At the risk of getting slammed for asking silly questions...
1. Has anyone on this forum recently arrived in the country in the early morning and had difficulties obtaining their visa upon arrival within a few hours. I have a connecting flight that will most likely be anywhere between 30 mins to 3 hours after arrival that I am trying to make. I'm trying to gage whether its really necessary for me to send my passport to a city with a PNG consulate generate to obtain a visa beforehand.
2. According to the LP book, its supposedly possible to get to Mt. Hagen to the Wilhelm area (2-3 hours) then onward to Goroka (another 2-3 hours), and then on to Madang (4-6 hours) all by PMV. Upon contacting supposedly reputable travel agencies, I hear that only the stretch between Goroka to Madang is doable by PMV, while private arrangments is required between the other destinations and the trav...
