Hello!
My boyfriend and I are currently looking to rent/sublet an apartment in Hong Kong beginning around December 10th through January 1st. We are able to pay about HK $3,255 - $3,875 (about USD $420 - $500) for 3 weeks or about HK $1,085 (USD $140) for each week. I know these are very low prices, but we are on a tight budget, and are hoping that we can work out a mutually agreeable situation! We are very tidy and responsible and are more than happy to house/plant/pet-sit during this time.
WHO:
We are two young professionals who are 28 and 32, from San Francisco, California, taking a year off from the economy to travel. Nate is a music writer and I have worked for the American Red Cross for the past 6 years in disaster relief services. After I was laid off this past summer, we decided to take the opportunity to travel around the world, a life-long dream. We will be in Hong ...

I am arriving at PEK at 3:40PM and leaving on domestic flight 7:45 the next morning. Any suggestions on what I could fit in, I am planning on staying at an airport area hotel (any suggestions?) On my return trip i am arriving Beijing t 4 PM and leaving Beijing at 5:30 PM the next day... a little more time to stay at a central hotel and walk in morning. How early should you be at airport for internal and international flights? While I am an experienced traveler I have no Chinese and no experience in Beijing
Thank you

I'm in Lijiang at the moment, planning to do a 2 day hike through Tiger Leaping Gorge, and I've just heard it's closed.
I was told by the fellow at our hostel that the low road is closed all of December. However, apparently the upper trail is open, but the ticket booth is closed so there's no fee at the moment.
Anyone out there have any info to confirm this? If you've done the hike in the past week or so, any trouble with the road being closed?
I'm wondering what our options are for getting back to Lijiang. We were planning to hike one way, starting at Qiatou, and take a bus back through Qiatou to Lijiang after the hike (wanted to avoid the longer drive back through the National Park and paying the entrance fee).
With the lower road closed, is hiking back to Qiatou the only option?

Seems May 2009 LP guide isn't exactly updated about this place, so if anyone's considering going there, take these changes into account:
1. There's a 60 yuan entrance fee, planned to go up to 100 yuan in april! (I got in on a 20 yuan student ticket, using my driver's license as a 'student id'. A taiwanese-american guy I met got in there by bribing a police officer with 20 yuan - so I guess there's always a way around)
2. There's a new road here from Kaili, it takes only 1 hr. Here's the new bus schedule:
Kaili - Xijiang : 0900, 1030, 1230, 1430, 1630
Xijiang - Kaili: 0730, 0830,1000, 1300, 1500
Xijiang - Leishan: 0630-1730, regular buses
3. Don't expect to feel that you're the "only one who's found the place" as LP puts it. There's an enormous parking lot, full of chinese tour buses even in the off season, a big ticketing booth and a crowd of policemen at the entrance. The mai...

Hi,
I'm thinking of going to Yuanyang between February and April (depends on flights).
Is Kunming the closest place where you can fly to?
I think, that I either have to go from Shenzen or from Bangkok to Kunming by plane? Are there still cheap flights from Bangkok to Kunming?
Thanks.

I consider taking a flight that lands at 23.55 at KWL on a sunday, will it still be airportbusses then?
And how is Guilin downtown 01.00?
Would it be safe/easy to get myself from where the airportbus arrives Guilin to a decent hostel?
Thanks

I'm going on a trip that will land me in Yunnan pretty soon. I was originally hoping to visit the Yuanyang rice terraces and in Lijiang, but unfortunately as the planning continues I realized I had to choose between one or the other. I've heard amazing things an seen amazing pictures of both places. Can anyone recommend one or the other or give me more information to help me decide between the two?

I am about to embark on a blitz tour of China where I will visit all of the cities mentioned above. For a bit of background, I am studying in China and going on this trip during my break. So I am fairly familiar with the train system and can speak mandarin decently. I won't be spending very long in any one place, and I will be staying with local friends in Suzhou and Hangzhou. Does any one have any recommendations for things to do, see, eat, drink, participate in, etc. while I am visiting any of these places?

I'm planning on going from China into Thailand overland towards the end of the month. I've found a lot of conflicting information about the journey so I was wondering if people could help me out a little bit. Below is my planned itinerary for how to do this trip. I've included the travel times I have gathered from various sources. If anyone knows average prices for any of these trips, can tell em the general time range when these trips leave, or can tell me what the actual length of the trip is, I would really appreciate it. Also if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations on how to do any of this differently I would be happy to hear it. Thanks
Starting in China
Leave Kunming in the evening, arrive in Mangla in the morning (13hrs)
Take a bus from Mangla to Mohan (1.5-3hrs)
Cross from China to Laos, arrive in Boten
Take a bus from Boten to Huay Xai (6-10hrs)
Spend the nigh...

I spent the better half of my Sunday morning looking for info on this, but it seems like everything (including what is on this forum is little dated). I live in china right now, with a multiple entry visa, so I have no issues coming back in. I would really appreciate any insights on the following
1) The only service I found so far is http://www.maekhongtravel.com/en/. Does anyone know anything about them, are they the boat to go with?
2) I'm a little time sensitive in my trip, does anyone know how reliable their time schedule is and what the chances are that the trip will get canceled? I've read a lot of people mention that boat only go when their are enough passengers. Does anyone know how far out they decide that? I won't have time to wait if the boat gets canceled.
3) I've seen some posts talking about having to arrive early the day before in order to leave. Can some explain t...

Hi,
I am going to china on Christmas day and returning eight days later. This is recent decision and I want to get some advice from people about where they recommend doing. I will be starting in China and going to X'ian, taking in Huashan while I am there. I don't want to spend too much time on trains so I have decided to stay in Northern China. Have you any recommendations of places you liked very much in this area?
Thnak you!

When in Dali look up a young man called 'Volcano' at the Bamboo Cafe and he'll take you'll have a great adventure traveling on local transport to a nearby village to see the Bai people perform, then go out onto the lake for a spot of cormorant fishing followed by a tasty fish lunch. We had great fun and the only other tourists round were Chinese. There was no pressure and the cost was very reasonable.

Hi,
Im getting the trans-mongolian express from moscow and will be arriving in beijing sometime around the 1st February. After a few days there i hope to make the trip down to Xi'an for a short while before heading back up to the capital for chinese new year on the 14th. On around the 17th i was looking at hopping over to Japan or a few weeks and getting one of the rail passes on offer to explore the country before flying to Hong Kong early March and then flying on to yunnan to explore the tiger leaping gorge and surrounding areas. After this i am looking to travel through Vietnam and Cambodia before making stops at Singapore and KL before arriving in Sydney in April. I am 19, UK citizen and on my gap year before starting uni next year.
This is what i am unsure of and would appreciate advice on:
Will i be able to get the train tickets to Xi'an that close before chinese new year...
