Correction to Beijing 9 City Guide

It’s come to our attention that there’s an error in the Beijing city guide. (We printed the map from page 291 on page 293.)

We’ve fixed the ebook and the digital chapters, but if you’ve bought a copy of the book already you can get a corrected copy of pages 292 and 293 here.

Chinese Visa Sticky

Until recently, it was relatively easy to get a Chinese visa. The situation has changed beginning about mid March and it is expected to remain unstable until well after the Olympics.
It is now impossible to get a 6 or 12 month multiple entry business visa.
It is now impossible to get entries longer than 30 days.
In many embassies and consulates it would appear impossible to get a double entry tourist visa.
It has been reported that beginning July, it may be difficult to impossible to get extensions.

From Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, April 6:
"Beijing has stopped issuing multiple-entry visas, risking major inconvenience to foreigners who travel to the mainland regularly, especially on business. Hong Kong travel agents say the ban will stay in place until after the Olympic Games.
+Travellers are now restricted to single- or double-entry visas valid for 30 days. ... more »

New train service between Kunming and SE Yunnan

I rode this train yesterday and thought it might be of interest to some of you planning to travel from Kunming to the SE of Yunnan, for example to Jianshui, Yuanyang, and Hekou (Vietnam border.) Up until the beginning of this month (May, 2013) the only public transport to that part of Yunnan has been by bus. But there is now limited train service, which presents another option.

There is one train a day in each direction between the main Kunming station to Mengzi Bei Zhan 蒙自北站, which is a few kilometers north of Mengzi. Mengzi is a regional bus hub, and you can easily catch a bus there to Hekou, Yuanyang County, or other remote parts of SE Yunnan.

I rode the train from Jianshui up to Kunming, on my way back from Vietnam. Hard seat 硬座 only (no soft seat or sleepers.) It was full but not packed, by which I mean all seats were taken in the cars near mine, but people were not standin... more »

third stop in China?

My wife and five year old son will be travelling with me to China for 17 days this coming July. We plan on visiting Beijing and Yangshuo. Any thoughts on a third place? We aren't keen necessarily on Xian or Shanghai. Would need a location that is between Beijing and Yangshuo, or at least reasonably easy to get to. We are thinking 5 days or thereabouts in each spot, allowing for travel between.

All suggestions are welcome!

Chinese visa

Hey folks.

My friend and I are travelling around Asia this summer, and we're looking into the best way to get from Vietnam to Hong Kong. Flight prices from Ho Chi Minh (in Vietnam) are working out at around £150 (and more from Ha Noi), so I looked into travelling overland. It seems it's doable, but takes around 3 days, and takes you right into China and you go to Hong Kong from there. So, I was wondering if, since we're only gonna be passing through China, we could perhaps get a different visa to the normal (expensive) tourist visa?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Mark.

Studying Mandarin in Beijing??

I did a search on this topic but nothing specific came up so here goes:

Everybody seems to agree BCLU is the best uni to learn Mandarin in Beijing.Any other recommendation?
Are there courses for intermediate level learners?I am looking for short term courses,a maximum of six months.
I emailed BCLU and I am yet to receive their reply.
Would another university in Beijing cost less than BCLU but still be as good teaching wise?
Thanks a lot!
p.s I intend to go next year.

Shanghai accomodation with good atmosphere

Hello,

We are looking for a verry nice hotel/ B&B/ hostel in Shanghai.
What we are after is:

  • a good atmosphere
  • rooftopbar
  • rooftop swimming pool
  • in or near the centre (the bund)
  • welness/spa

We are mid 40, have a lot of travel experience (backpacking) and are used to sleep in dorms in hostels. Shanghai is at the end of our 6 week trip with the transsiberian expres and after sleeping in dorms, we like to have a bit of comfort. Or actually a lot of comport!

We love to stay in a 5 star hotel, but don't want to go over the top moneywise. For us, atmosphere is the most important thing. Any ideas are welcome. Even a good hostel/homestay is fine by us.

Thank you,
Michèle

Im Heading to hangzhou tonight and I would like to do some trekking on the yellow mountain. Has anyone done it recently? If yes, did you sleep up there? And which way did you do?
The LP suggests to do the western steps on the way down but I'd like to see your opinion!!

Guangzhou - Beijing transit visa

Hi all,

I have a flight booked from Sydney to Istanbul, via Guangzhou and Beijing (PEK)
I have looked at the chinese embassy page and have seen that if I have a connecting flight and don't leave the airport then I dont need a transit visa, however I am concerned about the Guangzhou-Beijing as it will be a domestic flight which would require me to leave the international section of the airport.

I have emailed the embassy and always the airways ( china southern) but was wondering if anyone has experienced anything similair to this and could help me out?

Cheers

'only in china' memorable experiences : any recommandations?

Hello,
I'm planning to travel this summer through China. I don't travel with a settled plan and do not feel compelled either to visit the main touristic sights but look for an interesting experience. So far, I've planned to have a camel riding trek in the taklimakan desert and a horse trek (maybe in Sichuan).
I'm also looking for: a place where I could possibly share the lives of the locals, a monastery where I could stay overnight or have a retreat for a couple of days, places which are stuck in time (either with colonial or traditional chinese atmosphere/architecture) and any other great experience I could have in china that I may have not even heard about.

I may have to add that I will enter china by bus from Kazakhstan so I will start with the Western part of china and then follow my whims. All kind of recommendations on these would be much appreciated, thanks. more »

Route around china

So i land in Beijing on Sunday 7th July and Exit Hong Kong Saturday 27th July.
I understand this is a short trip in terms of a country the size of China but its as much time as I can get off work.
I plan on spending at least 4 days in Beijing to take in the Wall, Forbidden city and to get lost in the city. After this I plan to get the over night train to Xien to see the Terracotta warriors. After this im not that sure which way to take my trip I would like to go to YuanYang and see the rice terraces. would this be possible and where would you stop along the way from Xien. Or would it involve to much traveling, for the time I have?
At the end of the trip I want 3 preferably 4 days to split between Hong Kong and Macau.

Nepal to Tibet on onwards?

I see that the regulation of five people from the same country to enter Tibet has been dropped which has ever so slightly fanned the flames of my idea to cross Eurasia from coast to coast entirely by land. I'm Irish.
I'm currently in India. So if I am either prepared to pay solo or find others is it possible to take a trip from Kathmandu into Tibet and crucially onwards out of Tibet to continue independently in China?
I see from a thread here that you can't go east towards Sichuan or Yunnan. What about heading north towards Urumqi and heading East from there or before there?
If such a trip was possible what's the minimum amount of days I could spend in Tibet? Thanks for any help.

China 72 Hour Visa- Standby Passenger

Hi folks,
I’m an airline employee (not flight crew but just humble office job) who flies standby on flights and am an American/Australian citizen. I will be flying into Beijing from Seoul for only 48 hours and then continuing onto Hong Kong. I’m the perfect candidate for the 72 hour visa except…..

I have read that I must have a confirmed seat. I will have a ticket and booking number from Dragon Air that looks like any other reservation, but it will be standby. Some sources have said this will not suffice while applying for the 72 hr visa, even if it looks like a regular booking and I have all honest intentions not to stay beyond the 72hrs.

If it doesn’t suffice, would I get into trouble if I book a regular refundable plane ticket before arriving into Beijing to show confirmed travel onwards to Hong Kong but I’ll also have the standby ticket? I’ll then try (hopefully successfull... more »

Where to stay in Beijing

I'm traveling to Beijing and will be there for a few days mid June. Basically, it's a huge city and I can't even start to figure out where to stay. Can someone recommend a good area close to lots of good food/bars and easy access (not necessarily close, just easy/quick bus/cab/subway) to tourist spots like temple of heaven and forbidden city?

Thanks!

Cooler places to go (literally and figuratively)

I will be in China from the 25th of June to the 15th of July. This is my second visit. I spent 4 weeks there in 2011 around July, visiting the Yunnan region, Wuhan, Chengdu and Beijing. I enjoyed Chengdu a lot but Yunnan the most. We also really enjoyed the cooler weather of the region. So, this time we're looking for somewhere else cool!

I've been reading up about the area surrounding Guilin and that's definately on the list (although not Guilin itself). We'll also be in Guangzhou (Huadu) as my parents live there. We enjoy beautiful scenery, some history, markets, towns rather than cities and some outdoorsy activities (walks under three hours for example). I'd prefer somewhere we can get to via train or on a bus trip under 12 hours.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking three to four days in Guangzhou and maybe 5-6 in Yunnan. So, that leaves around 9 days to fill in.

Chinese tourist visa for canadians

Hi there, this is a probably a simple question but after being on hold for more than an hour with the chinese embassy well this could be a bit quicker...

So if you are a canadian ( probably the same for most other commonwealth countries) and you want to travel independantly in china you need to provide your intinerary and hotel bookings...

So my question is do I need to book all the nights or just a few in the start,,, I guess I could use some online site like hostelbookers but I'm guessing i would loose quite a bit of cash doing so...

Can you buy an invitation at a travel agency....

Any tips on making this a more simple process would be appreciated.

Thanks
Have a nice day
