travel over land from Eilat (Israel) to Dahab (Egypt) and back.

Hi. Thanks for reading!

I will be in Israel in December/January. I would like to travel over land from Eilat (Israel) to Dahab (Egypt) and back. Is this possible? What are the challenges in doing so and how long will it take? Basically I'd like to find some good beaches/diving other than Eliat, so trying to figure out my options. BTW, I have a US passport and a Jewish name.

Thanks for your help. :)

One or two days in Dubai?

Hello again, Guys!!

I have one flight to Singapore and Myanmar next August and I have one doubt. I'll have two days of stopover with Emirates in Dubai and I was thinking if it was possible to visit Abu Dhabi in one day and Dubai in another. I've heard about traffic in Dubai-Abu Dhabi. I don't need to know all the attractions, just take some photos and hang around the cities. What do you think? Better stay two days in Dubai or spend one day in each one. Maybe in the future I'll have another opportunity to visit Dubai again. And it's better arrive in Dubai and go straight ahead to Abu Dhabi and do Dubai in the end? Seeing that my flight is arriving and departing from Dubai and Emirates have one free shuttle.

Thank you!!!

Visa denied

Since I know many watch this thread for visa information I thought I would share my recent experience. I had applied for an auth number from the MFA for a trip that was to start in mid May and end before the end of May. I am an American citizen. I was recently informed by my travel agent (key2persia) that my visa, along with all of their American customers, had been denied. No reason was given but I am assuming it was a combination of being an American and wanting to travel so close to the election.

It was an unfortunate decision for me as I had been looking forward to visiting Iran. Good luck for others attempting to travel to Iran!

Weather condition in Iran

I am planning a trip to Iran this July and I am wondering what the weather is like in southern Iran
especially places like Isfahan and Shiraz. Is it very hot outside? I have heard the temperature
is about 40-50 celcius degree, so it's not a very friendly weather for travellers. Is that true? Thanks!

5 days in Israel

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I will be spending 5-6 days in Israel between 19-24 May and we are planning on the following vague itinerary:

-2 days: Jerusalem
-1 day: floating in the Dead Sea
-2 days: Tel Aviv

Does this sound like a good idea?

If so, would anyone have any advice regarding the following:

-What we should do/see in or in between these 3 places?
-How do we get about between these places?

If it helps, we're both mid-20s, and thoroughly enjoy a variety of things like history & culture, music & dance, outdoors & animals, food & drink (I mean, mid-20s, we drink as irresponsibly as expected).

Thank you very much in advance!
-s

Alamut, Gazor Khan and Salambar Pass hike

Having just visited Alamut Castle, I would suggest that it belongs in the same category as 80% of each LP country guide; the “Really Not Worth It” category. The castle is little more than a few wall remains, which is currently, and has been for years, covered in building scaffold and sheeting. This is to facilitate work on the ‘castle’, which is clearly on its way to being another of Iran’s over-restored ancient ruins.

Gazor Khan meanwhile is just another tatty, litter strewn village, like the hundreds of others one can see around the world. The hiking meanwhile, which much raved about if one reads the comment books at Hotel Koosaran (LP p113), is average. I think the raving comes from people not used to hiking in the better parts of this planet. Hotel Koosaran is average and overpriced, now suffering the curse of inclusion in the Lonely Planet. No charm in evidence when I visited... more »

CURRENT PRICES IN IRAN AND FOREIGN CURRENCY PRICING

A number of entries in the August 2012 edition have decided that, irrespective of local currency movements, they require payment of at least the amount in US$ or Euros mentioned in the LP guide. They seem not to realise that currency conversion was done for the convenience of LP readers, at a time of wild fluctuations in the Iranian Rial. Accordingly they are now seeking to vastly inflate their prices, with local currency having fallen faster than local inflation. A vast majority of these people have no costs in foreign currency and as such their inflation argument has no justification. To compare: the Espinas Hotel in Tehran charged me just under 2,800,000R, which at the recent exchange rates is around $78. The LP guide lists the Espinas at $130 for equivalent room. Most hotels this last month were about 60% of the LP US$ price. I would recommend tourist decline to pay the over-infla... more »

Going to Lebanon, been to Israel, no passport stamp

My wife and I are planning on travelling to Beirut in June. She has been to Israel many years ago and has, since then, received a new passport. She has no stamp in her passport or evidence of having gone to Israel so my question is: will she be able to enter Lebanon?

Are there other ways of immigration desks knowing that an individual has been to Israel without the proof of a passport stamp?

We are very excited about travelling to Lebanon but we just want to make sure that we can get there. Any insight would help, thanks!

Traveling from Masada to Eliat

Hi all,

Just curious if anyone can help me out. I'll be traveling from Jerusalem to Eliat, stopping in Masada to stay the night and see the site. Is there public transportation from Jerusalem to Masada, then a bus from Masada to Eliat? Thanks!
