any ideas of where to rent bicycles in Beirut? thanks, dave
I'm considering a trip to Jordan for 6 full days (ONLY :( ) in February. Can anyone suggest a great itinerary for that time period? Am I just crazy to try to do it in that amount of time and should wait until I have more time?
I only have 3-4 days in Jordan (flying in from Turkey and back to Turkey). Is Petra doable in this amount of time and also would love to stay at bedouin camp (hope I got that correct). Would love to have more time but Turkey is the main country for this trip. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

I'll be arriving in Tel Aviv on December 29 and staying in Israel until January 8th. I have some stops that I have to make: Tel Aviv (obviously), Haifa, Be'er Sheva and Jerusalem due to some master's work, but I'd like to get out to do a day hike or two, maybe around the Sea of Galilee (other ideas certainly welcome). As well, I'm fairly educated with regard to religion (thank you uni electives!), though not a practising religious person, so would like to see antiquities and sites of any significance.
Any suggestions for me to strike a balance?
Further, I'm just starting my serious research (work has gotten in the way until now) so I don't really have a handle on the distances and the ease with which travel is possible. I'm reading up on buses and car hires but I'm more concerned with areas where I'm not allowed. I'm confused as to Palestinian are... more »
I plan to travel from Turkey down to Tel Aviv. leaving Istanbul in Xmas and arriving tel Aviv 3 weeks later going through Syria then Lebanon then israel.
Is this possible?? if so what is the best way to do this??
What are the visa situations. Im a NZ passport holder in London
We're looking at various tour options for exploring the Galilee and the Golan Heights in January (12-14th). I'm really not a fan of large coaches, but I can't find any small tour groups to join (4-10 people). So we're thinking of getting a private guide for a day or two. Maybe take a Jeep tour?
It's a bit pricey for just two people, especially when the car seats 4-6. It would be nice to find someone else who's looking to take the same type of tour around the same dates, so we could split the cost.
If that's you, please let me know.
Also, if you know of any other options, I'd appreciate any recommendations.
Just came back from a 5 week travel around Iran (the tailend of a 5 month stay), and I wanted to put up some advice in case anyone else is thinking about buying curios on their trip away. I haven't really seen this topic written about on Thorntree yet.
Firstly, absolutely do NOT buy in Esfahan! I was astounded by how awful the quality of the handicrafts around Naghshe Jahan (and even deeper into the bazaar) were. Rubbish Turkmen stuff is touted as 'tribal jewellery', the painted figurines on boxes are sloppy and heavy, and at least one seller spoke about ripping me off to my face, unaware that I could understand Persian.
We spent much of our trip shopping and this is what I would recommend instead of Esfahan:
- Tehran: If you don't have much time, I would definitely buy from Tehran- the prices have been marked up astronomically but much better quality can be found here. Iran...
Given the recent developments in Syria and the fact that I could not exactly find the answer to my questions in previous posts (but please forgive me if I'm wrong), I open this new thread.
My girlfriend and I will be travelling overland to South Africa from the Netherlands as from 1 February 2012. We will most probably arrive at the Turkish/Syrian border around 15 February 2012. I am not sure if we can get our visa at the border on arrival (and if so, in which city?) and if it would be more sensible to request for a visa "at home" at the Syrian embassy in Brussels (or would that make things worse if our request is denied?).
What would you suggest? Thanks a lot in advance!
Mum-RUH-LHR. I have a 16.5 hour layover in RUH and travelling with my boy friend from India. Wil Saudi Arabian airline provide accommodation? If not is there any shower, sleeping facility within the airport? Suggestions pls
I am gonna be in Abu dhabi for 2 days and in Dubai for 2 days and wondering if u guys could give me some tips.
I obviously wanna see the architecture of the two cities but also very interested in sport.
I am planning to stop over in dubai to watch pakistan v england at thg dubai cricket stadium in january.
I need a bed for the night so am looking at one of the cheap hotels north of the creek (deira) or maybe in bur dubai district.
I understand taxis are cheap in dubai but get pissed off travelling round the world with taxi/tuktuk drivers asking stupid prices and refusing to put on the meter and often prefer public transport.
Does anyone know how much a meter taxi is likely to be from deira to the cricket stadium or is there any connecting buses from dubai centre or from any of the red metro stations to the ground.
My flight out is at 3 am from Abu Dhabi so will get the last Ethiad bus from the near Emirates towers at 11.30 pm. I will leave my bag at the hotel after checking out in the morning. assuming the cricket goes the distance are there malls with english language cinemas... more »

We're about to apply for our visa authorisation code via Iranianvisa.com.
Do we have to stay with the itinerary that we give them?
We are Australians currently living in Turkey.
Would it be better to apply through Istanbul or Ankara for the actual visa.
My husband and I (both American citizens) recently returned from spending three weeks in Iran. The first two weeks were on a group tour while the last week was with a private guide in the Caspian and northwestern part of the country. We exited by train from Tabriz to Istanbul (2.5 days) -- highly recommended.
We've been answering a lot of questions about the visa process and what it's like to travel to Iran as Americans, so we created an FAQ on the topic: Traveling to Iran as Americans: All You Need to Know
Hope it helps to demystify the process and help other Americans travel to Iran.
