anyone know Soran?
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knows about Soran in Iraqi Kurdistan? I have heard that it's a small city. Has anyone visited there? Is it safe for foreign female travelers?

Getting in and out of Sulaymaniyah from Istanbul
I am wondering about traveling from Istanbul to Sulaimaniya just for two days in November to visit a cousin. Iraqi Airway flies the days I want to go,but I may have to make a connection going in in Baghdad. Can this be done?
Anything special I should know about making these connections? Any special VISA for waiting in the Baghdad airport to make my connections if changing airlines prior to flying in to the Kurdish region?
Another option is to fly in and out of Erbil. How is the route to Sulaimaniya? If I go that route, I will have a private driver.Any advice for an American woment traveling alone?

Day tours from erbil
Hi all,
I'm in Erbil for a few days and keen to get out of the city to exlplore more of Iraqi Kurdistan. I'm struggling to find any tour agencies that run day trips, or a car and driver who can take me around.
Does anyone out there have prior experience of arranging day trips from here? If possible I would like to line up one for thursday and one for Friday this week.....

Turkey,Kurdistan,Iran by bicycle
Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to get a visa on arrival at the Turkey/Iran border crossing for a UK passport holder? I only want to travel in Northern Iraq/Kurdistan and enter Iran at Piranshahr.
I will be travelling by bicycle, does anyone know if this would create a problem.

Baghdad Security Update?
Hi All - my company is considering sending me to Baghdad for a week or two. When I suggested I might like some security, they rather sniggered and suggested sending one of the girls instead. Does anyone have a view on whether I was being overly cautious? I would probably have a driver, but would still be criss-crossing the city, and staying in some business hotel.
Should I:
(a) quit worrying - the danger level is way overhyped - just make sure my shoes are polished and my tie is straight, or
(b) employ a security detail and an armoured car as support, or
(c) take this as a hint from my employer that perhaps my services are no longer required?
Any views would be helpful. Also, if anyone knows a nice hotel then do let me know.

Winter time in Iraqi Kurdistan and local mountains
Hi,
I'm wondering if anybody here has visited Iraqi Kurdistan in the winter? I'm considering visiting in December/January. Does anybody know much about 'Sara Mountain' outside of Sulaymaniyah or other mountains within Iraqi Kurdistan? My plan is to check out a few potential spots for climbing etc. Is transport an issue during winter (i.e. from snow) or are most areas generally still road accessible during winter?

I am currently without an international cell phone, and wondering if it would be wise to wait until I get to Kurdistan to buy one to use there or simply pick one up in the states. any ideas?

Info bus Tehran-Erbil
Dear all,
Im planning a 15 days trip through Iran and Iraq this november but I cant seem to find proper infos about the bus journey from Tehran to Erbil.
I know already this trip could be done via Orumiyeh but i'd like to bypass it as i've heard of a direct bus.
So i wanted to ask if anybody knows about the bus company that operates this route, duration of journey, departure time, bus station in Tehran and if i need to prebook a seat.
Otherwise does anybody knows if there's any flight operating between this 2 cities? There's no much infos about this online...

Accomadation in Ebril
Hi All.
I arrive in Ebril in the early hours of Sun 2nd of sept. i have not booked any accomadation and i am slightly worried about the amount of posts regarding cheaper end hotels being full or not wanting travellers staying?
Any advice in this regard or advice on possible cheaper end hotels in Ebril would be very welcome.
