Sim Card for Middle East (Egypt, Jordan, Dubai and Oman)

Hi,

I am travelling through Egypt, Jordan, Dubai and Oman in the middle of the year.

I have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S2.

I'm looking for any recommendations of reliable phone companies, from which I could by a sim? Preferably one that I can use for the whole trip, and not have to switch between countries (if possible...). Also looking for a data allowance.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Can anyone recommend driver/guide in Erbil?

Can anyone recommend any English speaking guide/driver for 2 days of trips out of Erbil?

We arranged a trip in January then had to cancel, and the original guys are now wanting what seems to be a massive $750 for 5 of us for 2 days. They gave us this same price for 9 people on the previous attempt, which was actually through an agency so they would have been getting a lot less than this.

They gave us their fees per day which were reasonable, and now are trying to charge us about 50% more and no interest in bargaining.

I'm guessing we can probably find someone once we are there - we will spend Thursday in Erbil and then 2 days of trips to Lalish and places on the way and the second day to the Hamilton Road and various site/places. We don't need help on itinerary at this stage just contact info...

As we are leaving late tonight and any fast replies are very helpful! more »

Getting into Syria via Turkey

Hi travelers,

I'll be in the area around December of 2013 and I want to get into a part of northern Syria controlled by the FSA. I'm having trouble finding information on the borders, whether they're controlled by loyalists or FSA, or which one I should pick. From what I've found there's one to the north-northwest, one to the north, and one to the north-northeast. But for some reason each source gives me a different name for these borders.

Which border crossings are open to me?

Thanks

4 days in Dubai with a 6 and 5 year old

Hello, we would appreciate advice on where to stay and what to do for 4 days in UAE. Arrive in Abu Dhabi at 7am on 27 Jan and depart at 10:45 am on 31 Jan.

As we have a 6 and 5 year old we wanted to stay close to beach and water parks. Can you recommend a hotel nearby that has a kids playground and pool and a kids club? We don't want the 5 star hotels that charge $400+ a night. *unless we can get it for a bargain or as part of a stopover deal with Etihad?

Also, would you stay 2 nights in each AD and Dubai or just go straight to Dubai. Any suggested itineraires for the 4 days would be appreciated .....and travelers tips. Thanks

Bus from Amman to Nazareth

Anyone know how to find out info. about a bus leaving from Amman and going to Nazareth, Israel? The LP says there's one operated by Nazarene Tours that leaves at 14:00 from Amman's Maraya Hotel....but upon search of that hotel I find it has closed it's doors. Anyone have any current info. for this bus company, and/or other suggestions? I'm just trying to avoid what sounds like a mess to cross via Allenby/King Hussein Bridge (and I want to go to Nazareth at some point any way)...and no, I do not want to go via Aqaba/Eilat as I'm coming from there earlier.

Thanks for the help!

Bus questions

When traveling on buses between cities of Israel....do you or can you even, make reservations? Can one just show up and expect to find room on the bus? Would buying a ticket the day before be ok? I see reference on TT to people riding on full buses and having to stand up. Does that mean the they are willing to pack the bus with people standing even if the trip is a few hours long. Thanks for any help on this.

Driving in Jordan - buying a GPS, renting a GPS, or buying a GPS map?

Hi there,

To take some stress off ten days of driving during my upcoming trip to Jordan, I am considering to use a car GPS to help with navigation. As I do not own an iPhone or any other smartphone, I can see three options:

Buy the map for my current GPS. A TomTom map for a whole Middle East costs some 150 Euro, so it's pretty pricey for a single trip.

Buy a brand new basic GPS unit in Jordan with maps already on it. In Europe, you can get a basic Garmin or TomTom for about 100-120 Euro; thus, absurd as it is, this option at least in Europe would work out cheaper than buying a map update, plus, you end up one GPS ahead ;) The obvious question here is how much a GPS unit costs in Jordan, where to buy it inexpensively in Amman or Madaba (airport included), and whether it includes an English menu and English signage on the maps (ie, would I be able to use it without kno... more »

Amman to Petra - Single Woman - Best Method?

Hi all,

I am a 20-something Australian woman, traveling to Jordan mid-year. I don't speak any Arabic, but I'm trying to learn a few travel phrases before I go, and always attempt to be culturally sensitive!

I am doing a stop over in Jordan and then meeting up with my 'husband' in Dubai. I have about five days, four nights. I want to go from Amman, down to Petra for two days, and back up to Amman to fly out.

Since I am traveling alone, I'm looking for suggestions on the best and safest way to do this?

Are there many group tours? Would it be safe to just hire a cab and drive down there alone? Should I try and book something through my hotel?

More generally, how safe is it to travel around Amman and Petra in taxis alone as a woman?

Any advice would be helpful!

Itinerary and security situation

Hello everyone, I am going to spend 4 days in Lebanon in two weeks.

I would like to do the Beirut - Anjar - Baalbek - Tripoli - Byblos - Beirut loop, plus the Beirut - Sidon - Tyre trip.

What is the current safety situation in those towns? I hear Tripoli could be a no go. I am an experienced traveller and willing to take some moderate risk, but not "stupid" risks, so any tip is appreciated.

As it stands I would sleep in Beirut, Tripoli, Beirut again and Tyre (or Sidon is better?). Travelling with a rented car.

Thanks!

Irangashttours

Hi everyone.

I have been in contact with Irangashttours.com for helping get a visa to Iran, and all seems fine and well.
They are asking me to pay 50$ now, which isn't a big amount in itself, but I thought I would post here just to see if anyone has anything to say about them. So.

Does anyone have any experience with this company?

Erbil at Eid (al Fitr)

We're currently based in Qatar, looking for somewhere to go over the Eid weekend holiday and are currently mulling over Erbil. It wouldn't be particuarly cheap but nowhere is cheap from Qatar over Eid!

Can anyone give me an idea of whether this is practical? Will anything be open given the holiday period? Will it be prohibitively hot? (I can look at temperatures online but difficult to know what that feels like on the ground)

Complicating factor is that there will be two young children coming with us (2 and 3). I know Kurdistan is considered 100% safe but I'm getting very negative reactions to the idea of taking children.

Egypt and The Middle East

This is more of a generic 'Egypt and the Middle East' query.

I'm interested in people's take on how safe it is to travel (on a shoestring style) around that area at the moment? I'm a SWF and will be more than likely travelling alone which I know doesn't sound like the smartest plan. Looking at Egypt, Jordan and Iran mainly but happy to hear peoples ideas.

Any hints, tips, views etc would be highly appreciated.

Cheers - Kate
