Sailing
Hello,
I'll be travelling to South America late January 2013 and would really like to join someone/people on a yacht for a few weeks or even day/weekend trips.
I'm a 27 year old male. I'm very laid back, easy going and hard working. I speak English, German and some Spanish.
I don't have a lot of sailing experience but have a Day Skipper certificate and am willing to gain experience.
Depending on the situation, I'm willing to pay/crew/cook for my time on board.
I'm flexible and would be interested in anything in South America, Central America or the Caribbean.

Puerto Vallarta to Mexico City or vice versa and weather....
Im returning to Mexico after Christmas to finish my last year's trip which saw me travel from Cancun to Oaxaca to Mexico City.
I'd love to go away in January, but I remember that I was cold in Mexico City when I was there last year, and the weather was predicted, and turned out to be, not so great for that month that I would have spent travelling to PV.
SO, I guess January is the worst month for -- do you call it "central" Mexico? Is February any better, or should I try to hold of until March? Don't like hot, hot, hot, but don't really want hail showers either. Can't go before Christmas, have to be back by March 30.
Mexico City airport connecting times
Greetings,
I am booking plane reservations and would like any thoughts or comments on the time between flights. Arriving MEX from LAX at 4:00 in the afternoon and trying to connect to a flight on Interjet to Oaxaca an hour and forty minutes later. I assume we will need to change terminals. We will probably have just carry on bags so we shouldn't be delayed at the baggage carousel. Is it realistic to think we get through immigration and local security to make this connection? Thanks in advance, and Happy Trails.
Thanksgiving in San Cristobal suggestion.
Hello,
I am heading to Mexico this Thanksgiving for 6 days (11/21-27).
I have done the exact same trip last Christmas: Cancun -> Chetumal -> San Cristobal -> Palenque -> Campeche -> Uxmal -> Merida -> Valladolid -> Chichen-itza -> Cancun.
This year's trip plan is Cancun -> Merida -> Planque -> San Cristobal & San Juan Chamula & Zinacantan (2 days) --> fly to DF. no transportation/hotel/tour has booked yet in Mexico.
I have 6 questions need your input:
1) I have been to co... more »
Place like Tulum near Puerto Vallarta?
hello! I stayed in Tulum sometime ago and loved it. Now I am going to Puerto Vallarta and would like to find a similar place to stay. i.e. a small, low-key village with beachfront huts and some decent food, and far from the crowds. Thanks in advance for any leads, I really appreciate your time!

Major new Maya Museum in Cancun, and archaeology news
Just wanted to share the news for any interested parties that INAH has just inaugurated their first museum dedicated entirely to Maya culture: El Museo Maya de Cancun. There's a good walk-through video here (http://www.inahnoticias.mx/ it's on the far left, in Spanish), which also features updates on the major archaeological work underway at Dzibanche and Ichkabal, in southern QRoo.
There's also a long-form article on the museum (in Spanish) here:
http://www.inah.gob.mx/index.php/boletines/248-museos/6217-museo-de-cancun-reservorio-del-legado-maya-en-qroo
I would love to hear any thoughts on the museum from travelers in the area. It looks to be a very good one.

back to Zihua
After about 10 years and many trips to other places in México, I'm returning to my old favorite beach destination. My Spanish is much improved, my knowledge of the customs and culture are enriched and I'd like to get off the tourist track a little. This trip I'm traveling with a friend who has never been to México before! Please offer any suggestions for hearing local music (not blues). local cenadurias, etc. that may be a cab or bus ride out of the centro. ¡Gracias!

Cancun: Hotel/Spa/Resort
I am travelling to Cancun and I would like to know what or which hotel/spa/resort is the best. I'm doing a lot of relaxing because this is my first vacation in a long time and I would like a place where I can stay in one spot, not be disturbed, and RELAX. What's the best hotel/spa/resort in Cancun?

Mexico City to Merida
Hello,
A friend and I are going to Mexico near the end of our trip (late december) and have 10 days from landing in Mexico City to get to Merida to meet some family. We have looked into the country and understand 10 days is nearly nothing, but we don't have much of a choice and are finding it hard to decide on places to go, even after reading some other forums. We have looked into many areas on the pacific and gulf side of Mexico including:
The Arch Cabo and lovers beach
Chichen Itza (ruins and cave lake) - most likely a must do for us
Tulum ruins
Cliff divers Acapulco
Matzalan
Teotihuacan, Mexico City (Sun and moon temple)
Monarch butterflies, Michoacan
Coba ruins
Jungle maya tour exploring underground rivers
Marietas islands, Puerto Vallarta and the hidden beach
We probably want to spend 2 or 3 days in Mexico City. Any advice would be helpful on where the best pl...

Day of the Dead: overhyped, overrated & underwhelming. What did I miss?
So what's all the hype about?
We've been in Oaxaca city for the last 3 weeks and by coincidence were here for DoD.
We went to XoXo and the following night to panteon general and found the whole experience to be fairly humdrum. Certainly did not enjoy the feeling of interrupting families' private moments while they were gathering together to welcome back their loved ones. While a bunch of tourists stuck tripods, long lenses and whirring flashes here and there and trampled on freshly dug earth.
As an outsider, it felt awkward. If I were local, I wouldn't want to share that family experience and I'm scratching my head to understand why people are drawn to it like moths to the flame.
I mean beyond sheer curiosity (the camp we sat in) and to an extent the hype on TTMB and elsewhere, why are people drawn back? What do you/they get that we didn't?
Sure, it looks pretty, bu...

Palenque to Flores via Yaxchilan & Bonampak
Hi everyone this is my first post on thorn tree. Sorry I know that Yaxchilan and Bonampak have been discussed on previous posts but had some questions that hadnt been answered there. I'm in Palenque right now but deciding the logistics of my trip to flores is proving harder than I thought, me and my girlfriend are only in our 3rd week of our first trip so we are pretty rubbish, lol.
All the tours i have seen only give 2 hours at Yaxchilan and 1 hour at Bonampak. This really doesn't seem like very long, we like to have quite a while at the maya sites, spent most of the day at Chichen Itza. Also I would rather do it independently as I'm not a big fan of group tours, seems like cheating, lol.
I was thinking of getting a collectivo to Frontera Corozal, dropping off our backpacks in the hostel (we are still very nervous about all our stuff going missing, lol) then doing bonampak in t...

Bus From Mexico City To Tapchula
Hey,
Anybody taken the bus from Mexico City to Tapachula?
I just toot a look at the website where the tickets are sold and it takes around 20 hours and costs roughly $100 US.
My main question is what the ride is like? Is it scenic? Urban? Are there a decent number of stops along the way to stretch my legs and get some air?
I, just for curiuosity, looked at Kayak.com for airfare from Mexico City to Tapachula and there was actually one flight for $100 US! But I do not have any idea if a fare that low will be available when I am actually ready to buy a ticket in a few weeks.
I also am more interested in taking a bus and seeing some of the country but that does depend on how cool or rough the bus ride is.
Thanks

Akumal or Tulum
After a long absence I'm going to be in Riviera Maya area for a nice long stay in January 2013... it's -2°C in Calgary today, and the prospect is warm and warming!
So far:
- start out on Isla Cozumel with a friend - she returns to Canada on 2 Jan, then I will be on my own for the next 10 days.
- 5 nights booked in Playa del Carmen and will be fine with a few things I'll revisit, and rack up as much beach time as possible.
- 5 nights ~ open to suggestions! read on....
- return to west coast Canada is 12 Jan @ 730 pm - suggestions for clean, basic accoms near (or an easy taxi ride to) Cancun Airport for my last night are appreciated - I haven't booked anything, thinking I could also go directly to the airport from PdC, Akumal, Tulum or ?? on 12 Jan.
Other info:
I booked a b&b type place in/near Akumal (info says it's less than 2km to the main business distr... more »
