This morning as I was leaving the RV trailer park, I did not encounter the mischevious little kids who block the road and demand tribute in the form of candy and/or fireworks. I stopped anyway and inquired about them. It turns out that their grandfather had introduced himself to me a couple of days ago, early in the morning, as he was taking a shortcut on his way home from work. In fact I have now completely forgotten the old fellow's name once again, but that is not important, as it is not the point of the story. The old man works as a night watchman at one of the beachfront restaurants. He described his work to me as 'velador,' a term I did not recognize, but after a bit more explanation, we figured out between the two of us that velador is another term for "night watchman."
After five minutes or so of processing this information, I think I have determined the origin of this... more »
Friday, I got up early and went to the gas station at about 7:30 to fill up with diesel fuel. Then I went inside the little store to see if, by chance, they had any of the special world-famous Christmas Beer "Noche Buena" (which I always like to mispronounce as "Buenas Noches" to try and get a laugh). Anyway, I saw a box and put it on the counter and asked if they had any more and a fellow told me that he would go and look. I stepped outside to wait because I knew it would be at least ten or fifteen minutes. These are the same people who looked for half an hour a few days ago and found nothing.
Outside, there was a work crew with a big truck full of guardrails and tools and so forth, so I started chatting with them for a few minutes. When I re-entered the store, a miracle had occurred and there were two boxes of beer waiting for me. The first box, the one I had found, had bee... more »
Just got the $268 RT flight from Philly to Mexico City. Deal was open to April but has now disappeared. Still a lot of deals for $318
Hello I'm looking for some information/tips on a good place to stay for a few nights in mexico city late feb - early march 2013. I am not really interested in a flash or expensive hotel and would prefer something a little outside the norm and weird. Any info is greatly appreciated.
I'll be traveling to Puerto Escondido after a few days in Mexico City. Is a bus my best option? I have read it can take some time to complete the drive, If so what are some good places to stop and stay over? Also any tips (what to do/what not to do) would be awesome.
I'm planning to go to Mexico at the end of January, And I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good all-inclusive 4 or 5 star to stay at?
When I go, I am particularly interested in great food, and of course the Mexican food. I guess the quality in freshness would be something of interest. Just don't want to get some place and the foods old or recycled etc... Just some decent place.
I also understand that Mexico can be dangerous. I have never really been there before. Hopefully find an all inclusive in a place where there is something to do beside living every day in the hotel like in a compound or something.
There is something to be said about safety down there I guess, but at the same time, I hope not to feel like I should be stuck living at the Hotel the entire time. I don't need to go out at night time necessarily, or be taking any long sketchy cab rides anywhere. Hopefu... more »
I had planned to spend a week in Chiapas this December and early January (12/26-01/03), and hadn't given much thought to leaving. My friend decided to join me and wants to go to a beach. My question is - is it better (in terms of beach and transportation) to head to the Pacific coast near Tapachula, or head to the Caribbean near Ciudad Carmen or Campeche. Would a bus trip to Campeche and back be excessive (we're traveling by bus and possibly driver/taxi)? The beaches between Ciudad del Carmen and Campeche seem pretty undeveloped, are they nice? Will we find a place to stay? We fly in and out of Tuxtla Gutierrez.
Hey all... Travelling to Cancun during Christmas break and we would like to go for a round of golf - looking for a good course for casual golfers... Also do they rent clubs or should we bring our own... Thanks in advance...
i've been doing plenty of reading online and travel books about the various options on the Oaxaca coast. all the areas look pretty darn beautiful to me so making a choice isn't easy. won't be there until mid January so i don't need to rush it.
i'd like some amount of quiet (ie, not looking to PARTY and hear others doing so at all times) and am not really interested in nightlife stuff - just a relaxed time.
i'm thinking Puerto Escondido or Puerto Angel as opposed to Huactulco. any input or recommendations would be appreciated.
We're a family of 3 currently travelling. We've just arrived in Mexico and are trying to work out what to do for Christmas. Ideally, we would like to spend Christmas in a guesthouse with a Mexican family to experience their traditions and how they celebrate it here. We'd also like to be on the beach, though not a surfing beach, as my 7 year old daughter will not go anywhere near big crashing waves. Have searched online in vain. Cannot find guesthouses on the Yucatan coast and search results just bring up big all-inclusive overpriced hotels. Any tips or ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance.

We booked from a website a private van to reach Chichen Itza from Cancun Airport.
The company is called Tukan Kin and they asked 190 USD for all of us, (we are a family of 5 people).
Does anybody know this company ? Just to be sure it's a reliable one.
Hello all and Good Afternoon.
We are a newlywed couple in our 25-35's and are looking to explore Baja California Sur for our honeymoon.
We have not booked anything yet, so we are looking to gather some ideas, and plan an itinerary.
This would be sometime in February, for 10-15 days.
We are looking for:
-Relaxing, as it is our honeymoon :)
-Scuba diving- we are both certified divers.
- maybe Fishing. *never tried but willing!
We would like to mix relaxing and adventure together, 1-2 days on the beach/ beach sports/kayak/snorkeling, followed by 2 days diving (2-3 dives a day), 1-2 days day trip/beach, 2 days diving/adventure, etc.
We would be flying in and out of Los Cabos, as it is the cheapest option.
We are thinking to visit:
-Cabos San Lucas/San Jose del Cabo
-Todos Santos (1 day)
would also like to visit if time allows:
-Margarita ... more »
Hi guys, we are a group of 5 guys traveling to Cancun for the first time on the 18th to 23rd of December. Hope that you guys can share with us on what are some tips and must-see/do activities at Cancun.
We are interested in visiting the Mayan ruins, Chichen itza, and we heard that there are some underwater caves? Is it open for all tourists or do we need special diving license etc to visit? We like to try some authentic Mexican cuisine, and we love to party of course ;) Oh, and are there any activities on 21/12/12 (end of the mayan calendar)?
Look forward to hear all of your replies!
Hey all!!! I need serious help. Im up to my eyeballs in research about mexico, where to go etc. and have got no further with my plans...can anybody out there please recommend somewhere for the below criteria?!
Im a solo 22yo gal, looking to meet loads of people
I want to let my hair down and have a good old party
BUT i don't want to be in the middle of a clubby city type place, thats a hot version of the university student towns here in england
Cheapish would be good
Beach is a massive must, im picturing chilled beach huts but with a good fun nightlife
More of a chilled backpacker scene where i can meet people living out there rather than holiday makers
Basically i just want to go somewhere in January for a month or so, (very flexible), where i can chill out, learn some new skills (maybe yoga? and surf?) and just have a rudy good time without worrying about money and bor... more »
We are a group of 3 landing on 23rd night and staying in Mexico city for 5 days before moving on to Oaxaca for next 3 days.
1. If experts can give advice as to what can we do in our 5 days in Mexico city that would be great.
Are museums/public transport/tourist places opened on 24th (Monday) and 25th (Tuesday) .. We are staying in Zocalo so pretty much in the centre.
2. Any suggestions on day trips? When should trip to Pyramids be done and any suggestions ?
3. Are there any walking tours in Mexico city which can help appreciate the places more ?
4. And last, should we spend 1 day less in Mexico city and spend one more in Oaxaca and around ?
