Help needed - Boat to Andaman Islands

Hi,

does anybody know if is it possible to do a on-line reservation or booking for boat to Andaman islands?

I found the availability and fares on http://www.and.nic.in/transport/index.php, but I can't find a link for the booking.

This is the only lead I have:
Advance reservation of passenger tickets for the above sailing of MV Nancowry will commence from 08.12.2012 at STARS Ticketing Counters.

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has introduced a Single window system for the purchase of tickets by passengers for vessels plying in mainland-island sector, inter-island sector and foreshore sector. With the introduction of Single Window System, any class of tickets for any sector can be purchased from any counter throughout the STARS (Ship Ticketing Advance Reservation System), network—onward and return, either or both the tickets can be purchased.

If I need to do it in ... more »

Elaborate hoax Delhi airport BEWARE

Exiting the intl airport (terminal 3), I am very surprised. There is not a single tout trying to get me in their taxi or to their hotel. Completely different than Kathmandu. For a moment I think how great, people are honest here, no scams. Well, WRONG!

As I leave on the transfer bus to go to Terminal 1, some random guy in a cheap blue nylon jacket approaches me in the bus and tries to sell me "bus ticket" for 25 ruppes. Having read on this forum all about the corrupt bus system in the country, I immediately realize what's going on. At first I just ignore him and wave him off. He insists then I have to pay for "ticket" and shows me some fake generic ticket stubs saying "Rs 25" on them. I tell him this is nonsense; this is an airport terminal transfer bus, there is no fee, anywhere in the world, for airport terminal transfer bus. He doesn't budge. I threaten to call the police. Nothi... more »

Delhi on Christmas and train bookings

Hi!

I will be arriving Delhi next week 24th Dec, with my guy friend. We are planning to book hotels on our own now. And book train tickets to Agra Jaipur Udaipur and Agra when we land in Delhi.
Is this possible? Or is it too last minute?

Alternatively, we were thinking of hiring a drive to go to all these places between 25th to 30th Dec. So, yes search for a driver with a good price when we land in Delhi.

Would it be possible?

We are now unsure if train or car would be better. Thanks alot for your input.

Jewel

Tai chi

Helloooo,
I'm looking for tai chi sessions in february, in Rajasthan, Varanasi or in the south.
Any idea?
Many thanks
PS: I know, this is not the perfect country for that, and I'm aware of the session in Auroville where I would arrive to late... what a pity!

Foreign tourists in the Thar Desert

I'm super interested in the culture of the Thar Desert but the tourist towns don't really do it for me. i'm wondering if any other foreigners have stayed in Pugal area or any of the smaller towns between Bikaner and Jaisalmer and would have any suggestions (as well as what is and what isn't restricted- I've heard Pugal is off limits for foreigners but I also got told that Balotra is which is totally ridiculous). Also, if anyone is more clued in than I am about interesting festivals, especially music, please please let me know. I just read about the Kabir Yatri that happened last year that I somehow didn't find out about. Thanks!

3 weeks in madhya pradesh- itinerary suggestions

Hi, I am currently in Jaisalmer and will be leaving in a few days to make it to Kolkata by Jan 11 or so. I want to travel through Madhya Pradesh to reach Kolkata. I am mostly interested in culture and handicrafts although I do want to see some of the Afghan ruins and beautiful river gorges.
Here's my rough itinerary-I'm totally open to suggestions if there's interesting melas, haat bazaars or other places of interest.
Jaisalmer to Jalore by public bus via barmer- spend the day in Jalore to see the fort and temples, then catch a nightbus to Udaipur or Indore depending on what is available to get to Dhar.
Dhar-Mandu-Ujjain area for a few days, go to Bherongarh to check out block printing industry
Bhopal
Jabalpur and tribal areas around
Jabalpur to Kolkata by train

If there are any Buddhist caves or sufi shrines I can work into this itinerary I would like to. Also, if anyone can... more »

Packing for India (August-December)

Hello everyone!

I will be travelling to India for 4.5 months from August-December. I am going with a program, and am only allowed to take a backpack. They recommend packing one extra outfit, plus a journal and toilettries, as we will be buying a few salwar kameez outfits when we arrive. With a lot of help from my friends in another forum, I have narrowed my choice for a backpack down to the Osprey Farpoint 40.

While in India, we will be in Delhi for 2 months (August-September), and then travelling around the North/Northeast region for the remaining 2.5 months (October-mid December). I am wondering what you would recommend packing? Right now for clothing I am taking:

  • salwar kameez outfit (I've been to India for 1.5 weeks before)
  • burks sandals (I plan to wear street clothes with Keen sandals on the plane)
  • 3x underwear
  • raincoat that will fold up into itself for packin...

Accommodation in Calicut, Kerala

Myself and two friends (1 boy, 2 girls) are travelling to Kozikhode for part of our medical elective for 4 weeks from the 26th of January 2013 and are looking for accommodation around the 10-20USD a night budget. We have tried looking for homestays/hostels but have had no success. If anyone is able to help it would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

Craig

Kerala & beach 7 nights with children

we: 2 adults, 2 children aged 7 &1 will be flying into Cochin from Mumbai late afternoon on the 4th January, departing Cochin on the morning of 11th January.

we are looking for a leisurely relaxing break re: travel plans, we do not want to stay on houseboat overnight but fancy a lakeside break. Also, since we have 2 children we do not want to do too many site visits. Also, we're looking for decent hotels.

draft plan:

lakeside - Kumarakom and/or allepey 2 nights - kumarakom lake resort/vivanta taj/coconut lagoon or the leela/lemon tree

beach - varkala and/or kovalam ?? 2 nights -

cochin 1 or 2 nights -

munnar 1 night - in munnar

I would appreciate if anyone could advise i this plan makes sense over 7 nights with 2 children. Is it worth going all the way to varkala and/or kovalam for beach or is there anything nearer and as good nearer cochin? Is anyone familiar ... more »

Kochi to Wayanad - travel options?

This is probably a very basic question - but I'm wondering how feasible it would be to get from Kochi to Wayanad in one day or if I would need to break the journey in Kozhikode (Calicut) for example.

I see there's a train from Ernakulum to Kozhikode that should take 4.5 hrs and there are buses to somewhere around Wayanad that take about 3hrs - is this realistic in one day?

Or is it better to try to organise private bus - I am travelling alone, but presumably others are likely to be heading this direction during this busy holiday period.

Thanks for your help!
