sharing a rice boat from Alleppey

I am a single traveler and would like to experience the backwaters of Kerrala. I understand that all the house boats are only to be rent as a whole. I would prefer to go with a group. Are there any operators, that would take several individual passengers on board or does anybody have any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance,
Johannes

Trek Himalayas in Sikkim

Has anybody used Trek Himalayas for a guided tour in Sikkim. I have received responses and quotes from Mohan. Any feedback would be most appreciated. What is the general rule regards payment? I am hesitant to pay price in full before we arrive in Sikkim (I have read so many 'horror' stories) What would be a fair percentage to pay to ensure a booking? I am aware the tour operator also wants to know that we are a genuine booking. Many thanks for any help

Recommodations of nice hotels on the east/south coast?

We will go to Sri Lanka in July and plan to stay on the east cost, except of Kandy and Cultural Triangle. We would like to end our stay at a nice hotel close to a beach, etc. I have done some research and it seems to me all the nice hotels are located on the south coast.

1. Could anybody recommend a nice hotel in or between Tricomale and A-Bay?
2. Could it be possible to stay at a hotel in the south (Galle, etc) or maybe east during the monsson or will the weather make it an unpleasant experience?

Obviously India is included.

Hello everyone
I am currently working in Saudi Arabia I am planning a travel on September (one week-10 days). I am looking for both a travel partner and suggestions; I have defined an area I am interested in by making a rectangle in the Map. The Southwest corner is Kenya; Northwest corner is Turkey; Northeast corner is China and the Southeast corner is Thailand. Any country within this area I am willing to go. Obviously India is included. Kindly contact me in order to coordinate.
Best Regards

Monsoon situation?

Hi all, I have a friend arriving to meet me in Delhi today. The plan was to head up to Dharamasala tonight and spend 3 days there. Haridwar was also on the itinerary for in about a weeks time. From what I've read these two areas have not been affected by the landslides, but both their states have been. Is their anyone that is in either place now or has any advice on whether it is safe to go to these areas? If not, we have the next four days to kill, is there anywhere else in the north that would be safer to spend a few days?
Thank you!

No Seamail from Nepal or India anymore

I went to the GPO in Kathmandu a couple of days ago to discover that seamail from Nepal is no longer an option.

They are positive about it and have a sheet stuck on a wall explaining that it is due to India or something that happened there.
A traveller later pointed out that India also stopped seamail.

This leaves only the option of air freights, which was costed to me as follows from Nepal to UK:
10 kg = 7000 NRP
15 kg = 10000 NRP
20 kg = 13000 NRP

Prices are approximate and need to be loaded with an additional 1000 NRP for fees and packing.

Bad news for all those smelly trekking shoes going back home, good news for the receiving parties I guess... :)

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
straydog

Char Dham closed

.... more than 600 ITBP personnel are carrying out rescue and relief operations for thousands of pilgrims stranded in Kedarnath, Gaurikund, Govindghat, Pandukeswar, Karnapyag, Badrinath and Uttarkashi. The entire route of Char Dham Yatra, connecting Badrinath-Joshimath-Kedarnath-Yamunotri and Gangotri, has been badly damaged due to heavy rains and landslides. (Times 19 June)

Gangehi room types

Hi,
we are considering Gangehi for our next trip to the Maldives but there is quite a difference in cost between the various room types. Can anyone help with making our choice, is the c.£600 each upgrade to a beach villa from a garden villa worth the extra and if we are paying this then the additional for a water villa is small small. Any advice appreciated!

Sharing a taxi Leh-Padum

Hello,
Is anyone interested in sharing a taxi from Leh (India, Ladakh) to Padum (Zanskar) starting from July 7 or 8, 2013? We plan the way in 3 days:
1st day: Leh-Kargil, via Lamayuru, Shargole gompa
2nd day: Kargil-Rangdum, via Kartse Khar, probably Parkachik La
3rd day: Rangdum-Padum, via Zonghkul, Sani gompas

We have booked a taxi at the following price: Leh-Kargil 6500 Rs. (Toyota Innova), Kargil-Padum 17000 Rs. (Tata Sumo). The price for Kargil-Padum is probably overstated, but we have no other options.
There are three of us, so we have at least two free sits in the car.

Stomach Issues

Ok, so I've heard horror stories about people spending their vacations on the throne and obviously want to avoid that at all costs. So what are some of the best strategies for staying healthy and with a happy tummy while traveling in Sri Lanka? I know not to eat any street food, food washed in tap water, etc. but I am also looking for advice on medicine. I've heard some people take low dose anti-biotics while in Sri Lanka or take pepto everyday just to calm things down. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
