I'm a US citizen currently in India on an employment visa with an endorsement for the NGO at which I am volunteering. I have recently connected with another NGO for whom I would like to volunteer after my current program ends. Is it possible for me to get a new visa with an endorsement for the new NGO still in India? Or is it required that I return to the US and apply for the new visa at home? I know that there is the potential to get extensions of the existing visa, but since I will be switching organizations, it is my understanding that I will need a new endorsement, not just an extension of the existing one.
I arrive in Columbo airport on a Sunday afternoon. I can understand there are no trains to Tangalle at that time.
What are my other options?
Is it advisable for me to book a taxi at the airport? How much will it cost? I read the road by car can take five hours.
Will it be safe? I'm a woman traveling alone.
I've been working and saving up money to go on my first backpacking trip. I'm still saving, and probably won't be going anywhere until early summer BUT I can't help but dream of far away destinations. I have been struggling very hard with deciding on where to go. I'm an 18 year old female and this trip will be a solo one. Ultimately I want to go everywhere so it is hard for me to just pick a place to go without having any experience! And since flights are rather expensive, I think I should keep this trip in one "area" of the world. I hope to have between $6000 - $10,000 saved for this (including flights!).
Nepal really intrigues me. I want to experience the culture and see the beautiful landscape. I would like to hike the Everest base camp (ANY info/tips/etc on that would be GREAT). So I think maybe this will be my focus for this trip. Do you think that's a good i... more »

Thank you Michelle
I will arrive around 1pm at Polonnaruwa train station.
After some lunch I want to do some small sightseeing before I take bus or three wheeler to Habarana for hotel.
Do you have any hint where to go to have a nice approx. 3 hours sightseeing walk of the ruins there?
Do you know where the bus starts for Habarana and at which time?
Is there a place to store bags for the day at Colombo Fort train station. If so is it reliable, what are there hours? I'm sure it's affordable,
Is this itinary possible end of december/january.... by bus?

I am going to Sri Lanka for 3 weeks and just wondered if anyone had any advice on how to take money? Are travellers cheques accepted out there? Are there ATM's on the south coast?

We are heading down to Hikkaduwa to end off our holiday soon. We are going from Ella and have researched how to get there finding that the best option is to take the number 31 bus from ella to matara and then train/bus to Hikkaduwa. Is this the best way? How long will the bus ride to Matara take?
We're a British couple almost halfway through a 5 month stay in India. We're in Kolkata at the moment and were considering spending a short amount of time WWOOFING during January, maybe in Orrissa or further south. The WWOOFING India site is poor on info or testimonies so thought I'd give this forum a try...
Anyone had any experience WWOOFING in India? Any feed back on the organisation or the farms would be great, just so we have a bit more of an idea whht we'd be signing up for!

Does anyone know how far in advance one can book a train (saloon) from Colombo to Kandy? And what is the best way to do it?
I'm a budget traveler, going to Sri Lanka this December. I was keen on doing a 2 nights / 3 days wild life safari either in Wilpattu or Yala wildlife reserve? I have checked out the price of some safari tours & think its too exorbitant. Had a few of questions to help me plan it out.
1) Is there a cheap way to go on a safari trip? Can someone please recommend me a tour operator that will not charge the world?
2) Is it possible to " do it yourself" thing by booking accommodation in a jungle lodge & booking a vehicle for a safari if it works out any cheaper?
3) Is there a standard rate for entry to all national parks? Do locals & foreigners pay the same price?
4) which is the easiest way to go to Wilpattu national park from Negombo?
Thanks in advance for all the suggestion....
