Hi - In Varkala right now....a huge power spike has fried my power / battery charger cable (along with many other guests here).
Anyone know if there is an Apple Products store in Trivandrum??
My wife and I will have about 3 weeks for a trip to India. I've been twice before, and she's never been. I recognize that we could spend 3 months in India, and just scratch the surface. This is why we're going to focus on just a few places in about 3 weeks. (We'll fly into Delhi, and she'd love to see the Taj, so while it's touristy, etc - we'll tick it off ;)
A local guide/travel agent who I've worked with in the past is suggesting the following itinerary for Rajasthan.
I welcome any thoughts.. What places could be scratched off?
We love the mountains and scenery. Is it maybe worth a side trip to Gangtok, Ladakh? Are they reachable in mid-March?
Trip is in mid-March.

I'm wondering if I could get advice from those who have recently traveled to India. I'm not a professional photographer, but I really like taking pictures, so I plan on taking a lot while I'm in India (6 weeks).
I'm planning on buying multiple memory cards to spread out my pictures (in case of the cards getting lost, camera getting stolen, or cards getting corrupted/malfunctioning). But on top of that, I would like to be able to upload my pictures to a web-based site like SmugMug, which stores photos.
My question is, how fast is the internet speed in India? (Are internet cafes readily available?) How long would it take to upload, for example, 100 pictures (18MP)?
- is it best that I get a "card reader" so that I don't have to plug in my camera into the computer each time? (Does that also increase upload speed?).
I've heard some people say that internet caf... more »
So, I have a roundtrip ticket for india, purchased before my Visa, but my return flight is 17 days after my Indian Visa expires. I plan to change my return ticket when I'm in India to leave before my visa expires. My question is, would I be allowed into India if my return flight says it's for after my Indian visa expires, even if I intend to change it? Would I have any issues going through immigration?
Or does anyone have any suggestions? I think if I change my ticket after I've taken my departure flight (March 4th), It will be cheaper than changing it now, given that if I change now it will also factor in the departing flight, thats now gone up in price.
I am hoping to visit Leh for a few days in late March (arrive 25th March). I have read that March is still cold and that most shops, restaurants, hotels etc close for Winter. Is this likely to be the case at the end of March or will things be getting going as the weather warms?
This will be the only opportunity I have to visit so will it be worthwhile?
I will be working near Janpura, New Delhi this summer and was wondering how to go about finding a safe and clean homestay nearby for 3-4 months. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
Hi, we are due to spend 3 weeks trekking around SL from Feb 9th 2013.
Can anyone recommend the cheapest way of communicating with UK while we're there.
We have iPhone, iPad or basic Nokia phone. Is it best to buy a local sim card for an unlocked Nokia?
Are there many places you can access web for Skyping?
Many thanks. Grahame
during our upcoming trip to Sri Lanka (july/august this year) we want to spend a few days exploring the cultural triangle. would setting aside 4 days be enough to see the sites at Dambulla, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwu, Ritigala Ruins & Minneryia National Park? any suggestions as to where would be best to base ourselves for the 4 days? im leaning toward Sigiriya. what is the best way to get around this area.......public transport or hiring a car & driver. any other suggestions welcome
If anyone is looking for accommodation in Aluthgama (just north of Bentota), then I can recommend Rolanco Villa, a lovely house run by Kanishka Lakshan De Silva and family, who live next door and run a convenience store. It is located on the main Galle Road, and it's beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. it has 4 ensuite rooms (3 A/C) to rent on a room-only basis, but ocassionally we were treated to cups of tea, coffee, pineapple, cake, biscuits, and delicious home-made soup. It also has hot water most of the time. It is within walking distance of the main shops, a bakery and the railway station (although all you need to do is stand outside the gate and you'll soon get a tuk tuk!), making it easy to get to Galle or Colombo. The beach is also a 5-10 minute walk away. We had a very pleasant stay here, and the De Silvas are really lovely and welcoming. We paid only 3,500 rupees per... more »
I always like to feedback onto the forums when I take information from them myself, but apologies that it has taken me four months to get round to it this time!
In October/November 2012 I completed the three passes/three peaks trek starting in Jiri and finishing in Shivalaya 22 days later. I trekked with a friend who was a novice to trekking, though I myself would consider myself to be relatively experienced having trekked in Europe, Iran, Central Asia, Nepal, and India previously. I trekked with a 35l rucksack that was arounds two thirds full. I trekked with the following gear:
2x Summer Trekking Socks
1x Winter Trekking Socks
1x Pair of well worn in walking boots
1x Pair of zip-off trousers/shorts
1x Pair of walking shorts
1x Pair of thermal leggings
1x Thermal skin tight top
1x Woolly Hat
1x Pair of good quality sun ... more »
Just wondering if anyone knows about whether I can get decent surge protectors out in SL, or a website I can buy them from in advance? I'm about to move there to work and want to do what I can to keep my laptop safe, as I've already lost one to power surges.
(I'll be in Mullaitivu/Killinochchi area if that makes any difference regarding plug types...?)
Thanks for any help!
I written here before and recived some brilliant suggestions, so I'm going to pick your brains once again and I'm trully greatful for all comments and suggestions.
So we are going to New Delhi in mid mars and leaving from Mumbai mid april (26 days total).
The rough itinerary is as in the topic; New Delhi-Amristar-Jodhpur-Mumbai-Goa Beach.
We will mostly travel by train (will be booking in advance as much as possible), expect flight from Goa Beach back to Mumbai.
I'm doing some reading and talking to indian friends, but I'd love to hear about things that shouldn't be missed and hidden gems along the way. For example, around New Delhi we thought about visiting Agra and Jaipur. We thought about being in Punjab for the Holi festival, but haven't decide were yet.
Thanks in advance!
I've just realized that my passport expires less than 6 months after entry into Sri Lanka (7 july 2013 for an entry on 1 february 2013) and I am not able to apply for the visa online due to this.
Is it too risky to go anyway and get the visa on arrival or will they be very strict and I will not be allowed in?
If anyone has any experience or advice, that would be greatly appreciated.
Hey guys, we're planning to go to Sri Lanka in early April and we need to hire a car.
Hiring a car is like 60-100 USD per car per day, depending on the distance traveled. We now have two people only, which makes it a little bit expensive for us. If anyone will join us it would be great!
We are planning to hire a car for the while trip, which amounts to ten days. Here attaches our plan:
March 30: Flight arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport at
11:00pm, sleep in Colombo
March 31: See around Colombo(8am-2pm), take a train to Galle(2pm-5pm),
see around Galle(5pm-8pm), go to Mirissa and sleep
April 1: See Sri Lankan fishing in the morning(6:30am-7am), whale
tour(7am-12am), go to Tangalla to see wild sea turtles, sleep near Uda
Walawe National Park
April 2: Uda Walawe National Park(7am-10am), World's End(1pm-5pm),
dinner and sleep in Haputale
April 3: Tea f... more »
