Asia - Indian Subcontinent

I am planning on spending about 5 weeks India with my 14 year old. I have made several extended trips to India between 1984 and 1998, but at that time was spending alot of time meditating, visiting Buddhist sites and "hanging out". I LOVE India and so wan tot share it with my daughter, but I am concerned that the places I loved and enjoyed may not be nearly as intriguing to a teenage girl! I'd definitely like to take her to Varanasi and Bodh Gaya (my favorites!), but I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions of places that someone her age might really enjoy. I especially love to get off the beaten track..am thinking Gujarat, perhaps? Bhuj?I would love ANY suggestions, including places to stay. I always used to stay in the rock bottom places, but don't think that would make my daughter very happy!
I will be in Delhi next month when Australia play India. How easy is it to get tickets? Can you turn up to the stadium on the day and get them?
Just finished up 3 1/2 weeks with a couple of days in Negombo. What stuck out is how quiet the place was. I mean, there are about 15 or so, quite big restaurants along the road that parallels the beach, Lewis Place. 90% were empty and the few with customers were just a couple at one table. I noticed food prices hiked by 3x sometimes 4x above local prices. So, the season is over, the season hasn't really started, no one go's there except in transit or most folk just eat elsewhere, I wonder what the issue is specifically.... And all this on a Saturday evening,.
Ma nd my gf are looking at going to Sri Lanka for two weeks. Between Colombo and Galle. And was wondering where are the best places to stop along the coast? We are interested in food, culture and relaxing.
Any help would be fantastic!
I'm almost assuredly departing Mumbai from Bandra either on the train or a sleeper bus and online hotel pickings look slim. If I just rock up there early in the morning Feb 20, will I have trouble finding a clean, budget single room with a private bathroom for 2 nights? Is WiFi asking too much?
I will have around 7 weeks in India between July-September. This will be my first time in India after extensive travelling in SE Asia over the last couple of years. I am a cultural documentary photographer and therefore I have an primary interest in culture and religion first and foremost but also love extreme landscapes. During the 7 weeks I want to visit:
- Rajasthan (Jaipor, Jodhpur, Bundi, Gujjar villages)
- Kashmir (Srinagar/Jammu)
- Ladakh (Leh and maybe motorbike touring)
At the moment I am looking at 3 weeks in Rajasthan, 1 week travelling to, spending time in and travelling back from Varanasi and then 1 week in Srinagar before driving over to Leh and spending 2 weeks in Ladakh. My questions are:
1) Is this a realistic time frame to work in?
2) Do you have any off the beaten track recommendations for Rajasthan?
3) If I wish to do Srinag... more »
Has anyone taken a sleeper bus from Mumbai to Udaipur? The alternative is a tatkal train ticket for 3AC or SL and the train doesn't go the day I want anyway. Total price for 3AC tatkal is about the same as the bus but most of the bus trips are a couple hours shorter. As another bonus, I wouldn't have to deal with the insanity at any of the Mumbai train stations for a last minute ticket.
I will be visiting India (Delhi to Goa) June'13 for a duration of 3 months and I am seeking Volunteering Projects along the lines of construction projects, teaching, orphanages or simply helping out within a community.
Could anyone point me in the right direction? Or have anyone volunteered out in India before?
For those that have been backpacking & have taken out Backpacking Travel Insurance, I would appreciate if you could kindly point me in the right directly for cheap insurance...
Thanks a lot guys!
Travelling to Mamallapuran on our way to fly out from Chennai in May . We thought it would be a better place to stay for two days before flying out . Can any one suggest accommodation that is not too expensive say $ 20. 00 or less . Needs to be clean and quiet if possible . Been a bit hard to find something in our budget . Want double room with Bath and A/c if possible.
So I head to Nepal in March, get there the 2nd or first..
My main objectives are the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, Everest Base Camp, and Chitwan National Park.
My first question is what order would you do these in? The order I posted above is what I have in mind, but I was curious if others would advise differently.
Also, as far as the water goes - Is a Sawyer enough? I had a family member overly worried telling me to only drink bottled water... I figured boiled is safe though and if not the water filter should be enough to keep me healthy, right? Heres a link to the water filter's specs if you are not familiar: http://www.sawyer.com/tech-water.html
Aside from the order of my itinerary and water, is there any food to worry about getting me sick? I am a vegetarian, so I feel this should help me stay away from any funky meat.... but it also makes me wonder if I wi... more »
I'm a female travelling alone in Southern India. I will be in Kochi on the 8-10th of March. I was hoping to hire a houseboat for the night in Alleppey but it's quite expensive... Does anyone want to go halves to reduce the cost?
Let me know :)
just wanted to share our experience - we hired a guide and 2 porters through a trekking agency recommended by someone who posts on this thread regularily
we paid the agency $55/day per person for guide and 2 porters for a 16 day APC last October - there were 3 of us tourists thus $165/day in fees, which goes a very long way in Nepal
our porters were paid directly by the guide (who hired them directly) - I wondered why during the trek they were barely eating - it turns out that they were being paid 600 RU a day less 300RU for room and board
...when I emailed the agency owner, he just brushed me off with 'too bad for stupid porters'
we used this agency because we ... more »
If one were to arrive at Mumbai Airport (BOM) at 08:00, and wanted to eventually get to Bangalore (SBC), (but not in any hurry), would you recommend waiting around until the next available train on the same day that goes to final destination, (which according to clearsite is at 22:35 - ), or to get a room in Mumbai somewhere as soon as they are typically available (which I assume is around noon), and just waiting until the next day or so to catch a train to leave for Bangalore?
Trains also leave at 08:05 from Mumbai CST, but that is obviously too early to catch on the same day as my international flight arrives at 08:00!
My main concern is to get acclimated to the new time zone as soon as possible. So it prob... more »
Does anyone know if scuba diving in Pigeon Island is any good?
So far I have read on the internet that other parts of Sri Lanka are not that interesting.
