EXPECT THE BEST BUT BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST
I recently received a PM from “rdcomments”. With his permission, I have quoted an excerpt from his message below:
“I think that it would be very helpful if you could put up a post on "what to do" if an emergency rescue is required whilst trekking in Nepal, especially for a helicopter evacuation.
Some posters have said on the LPTT forum that approval from insurers should be obtained before a helicopter is requested, to make sure that the costs are covered by the insurers and also to ensure that the helicopter takes off - they will not fly until there is a guarantee of payment (due to abuses in the past). I have said that if someone (properly) requires a helicopter evacuation, then time is obviously critical, and attempting to contact insurance companies etc would result in at least some delay, let alone mis-understandings with different parties involved, different languages...

goecha la trek
Hi!
Three of us are planning to do Goecha la trek in the beginning of November. We would like to organize it from Yuksom or Pelling and would like to know how many days does it take that the guide arrange a permit for us (in Gangtok). Did anyone finish that trek recenty, any recommendations about the guide or agency in Pelling or Yuksom? What is usually cost for the trek (7 days)?
Thanks
Ursa

Tickets to England vs. India 3rd Test Eden Gardens 5 Dec 2012
Any ideas on how/where to buy tickets for the upcoming match at Eden Gardens? I'm coming up short looking around online and wonder if it's too far out to buy them. A few sites like viagogo.com pop up in a google search but I'm sure there are better ways to go about getting tickets. Thanks for any advice.

Looking for people to trek with
I am currently in Ktm and thinking about doing a hike from pokhara around nov 11/12 and looking for people to go with. I am thinking either poon hill or Narphu? This is just because I have previously done the ABC and Annapurna circuit. I usually carry my own gear and do not take a guide but I am happy either way. I am 28 and trekking tomorrow to gorkyo but then my husband goes home & I am wanting to do another trek while I am here. Please let me know if you are interested

1 day visa overstay
hey thorn tree-ers!
I'm in nepal right now with a tourist visa that I extended until the 2nd of november a few weeks ago. Only problem is my flight is on the 3rd. When I was at the immigration office the man said I would be given 1 days grace at the airport. I was happy to pay for the extra day but he was very insistent so I went along with it. Has anyone had experience with this before? I am very low on funds at the moment and couldnt really afford the $30 fine I've heard about. Is it possible to get another 1 day extension on top of my other extension?
Thanks in advance. Idid have a look through old threads but couldn't find an answer.

Everest base camp trek in December - hiking boots yay or nay?
Hi all
I'm looking at doing the EBC in December which I understand is an ok time to trek the Himalayas. I am currently travelling for 5 months and I do not have any hiking boots with me as I currently hike with my running shoes (Skechers). I have been looking for some boots here in Colombo but I cannot find any which aren't cheap imitation or brands I ones haven't heard of. Could those of you who have done the EBC walk advise whether hiking boots are actually required? Its causing me a bit of a headache as I will only be using them once and its an unnecessary cost and weight in my already full backpack. If I am to get them, I would rather buy them now so I can break them in. I would possibly buy them in India which is my next destination.
Thanks

Anyone interested in car share from ktm to Syabru Bensi for langtang trek
Hello, we are two travelers looking to find some people to split the cost of a private car to Syabru Bensi from Kathmandu on the 25th of October. We want to avoid the nine hour public bus. We have gotten quotes for about 20,000 rupees. If anyone is interested please let us know. We would also appreciate suggestions as to where to find people interested in sharing a car.. We will be staying in Thamel at the Shree Tibet Family Guest House the night of the 24th.
Thanks,
Mike

Travel Insurance for New Zealand
Hello,
My wife and myself are planning to visit NZ for around 13 days in december. I was thinking what kind of travel insurance should we opt for since I checked policies ranging from INR 375 to ~1000.
Would the basic medical and accident insurance suffice?
Is there anything particularly aspect that requires to be covered?
Thanks

Fuel situation in Nepal
Hello!
In about 10 days I'll fly to Kathmandu for a 12-day motorcycle ride (alone) through the Country (itinerary is Kathmandu-Pokhara-Muktinath-Pokhara-Chitwan-Kathmandu and its valley).
I just read somewhere that there's serious fuel shortage in many parts of the Country, presently, and that motorcycles are banned in some places?
Is that true?
This would make things terrible to me, because motorcycle (a 500 cc Royal Enfield) is rented and flights are already booked with no refund possibility.
Thanks you all!
