Trekking from Cho Oyu to Makalu

I have an obsession with seeing all of the 8,000ers up close.

I was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to go on the normal EBC trek and continue on past Goyko Ri and trek to the base of Cho Oyu and then returning and going to EBC?

Also, is it possible to hike from EBC along the south face of Lhotse and then continue another 10 - 15 miles to Makalu?

All the Makalu treks I've seen on the internet arrive there going far to the east and then hiking to the base camp while trekking in a north-northwest direction. Is there a reason for that?

Any help would be invaluable. Thanks!

Footwear in monsoon season

Hi all,

I'm heading to India in July and August (mostly Rajastan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh), and it has suddenly occurred to me that I may want to rethink my usual choice of footwear. I tend to wear teva style sandals most of the time, for comfort, but am worried about mud-borne parasites and bacterial infections, and the prevalence of puddles in monsoon season! I obviously want something that will stand up to 6 weeks of wandering around carrying luggage in heavy rains without breaking or going mouldy (or cause my feet to be too nasty and sweaty!). I have survived the SE Asian monsoons, but I'm told that the Indian monsoon season is something else!

Also was wondering about how much room there is to haggle over room rates in monsoon season.

What do you think?

All advice greatly appreciated. Thanks Thorntree people! Happy travels all.

How to ship car from India to Europe?

We did the way to India by car and to take it back home we'd like to send it by sea in container. Can anyone suggest a reliable shipping company from Delhi/Mumbai/elsewhere?

Nilaveli accomodation

Hello, I'm travelling to Sri Lanka late august this year, visiting the cultural triangle, and would like to spend a couple of days at the seaside, chosing Nilaveli as a destination. I have find out there is little choice for accomodation: best resorts have very high prices and often bad feedbacks; guesthouses seem to be not comfortable enough. Can anyone suggest a nice place with all basic comforts and reasonable price? Is it a good alternative finding a hotel in Trincomalee?
I would also appreciate your opinion about the beach (I've read a few negative reports on it and some not enthusiastic about Pigeon Island); in fact I could also skip Nilaveli and stop later in Tangalla, but I'm afraid of the weather in that period, is it good for the beach?
Thank you.
Carlo

Jaipur(pink city) 3 days! More??, less?? or just on the target??

Hello thorntreer's
We're visiting jaipur next week for 3 days. i wanted advice as are 3 days enough to get to see jaipur because we're only planning to visit jaipur from the state of rajasthan (jodhpur jaisalmer udaipur are excluded as we are bound by time) before we make our way down south. should we go with 3 days itself or stay for longer in jaipur. i know we cannot get to know the entire state in just one city but want to make the most out of it.
Also can we take a detour for a day just before we leave i mean is any place worth a day's trip from jaipur?

any help appreciated
thank you.

Itinerary south India Munnar, Wayanad, Ooty

Next August we plan a trip in South India. This would be our itinerary:

Chennai-mamallapuram
Mamallapuram-tanjore
Tanjore-madurai
Madurai
Madurai-munnar
Munnar
Munnar
Munnar-varkala
Varkala-kanyakumari-varkala
Varkala-kochi (karkidaka vavubali festival)
Kochi
Kochi-allepey (houseboat)
Allepey (boat race)-mettapaluyam
Mettapaluyam-0oty (toy train)
Ooty
Ooty-wayanad
Wayanad
Wayanad
Wayanad-mysore
Mysore-bangalore

What do you think about this itinerary? Are we distributing adequately the number of nights, according to the interest of each place? We have some doubts on how relatively wothwhile are Munnar, Ooty and Wayanad (we would like to do some trekking).

Could anyone reccomend any specific homestay or hotel? Any reliable backwaters boat?

Thank you more »

Long Weekend in Colombo?

I've got a long weekend (4-5 days) in December, and was thinking of going to see a new city/country for a few days.

Sri Lanka is only a 4.5 hour flight from where I live.

Would Colombo be a good option for this? Obviously not as good as spending 2 weeks seeing the whole country, but more interesting than spending the weekend at home.

Many thanks.

Sri Lanka - travel itinerary

Hi - looking for some feedback on the following itinerary, starting late December, going through early January 2014. Sri Lanka seems a difficult place to judge in terms of travel times, and the estimates I've found on google vary quite a bit, so if my estimates are off, I'd really appreciate feedback on that. All estimates are for private car. Kind of looking to dip our toes in a bit of everything -- ancient cities, history and culture, hill country, wildlife and a few days at the beach.

Day 1 - Stay in Colombo.
Day 2 - Colombo to Dambulla (*about 4 hours by taxi*?).
Day 3 - Visit Polonnaruwa and Sirigiya. Stay second night in Dambulla.
Day 4 - Dambulla to Kandy (*2 hours?*).
Day 5 - Kandy.
Day 6 - Kandy.
Day 6 - Train from Kandy to Ella.
Day 7 - Ella.
Day 8 - Ella to Tangalle (*about 3 hours by taxi?*).
Day 9 - Tangalle.
Day 10 - Day trip to Uda Walawe (*2 hou... more »

Travel Itinerary advice needed - India 2 months starting October

Hello,

I was hoping someone could give me some advice. My girlfriend and I are looking to travel to India in October and will have about 2 months to play with. It seems such a large country with so many places to see that's its been a bit of a nightmare to sort out a basic itinerary as a starting point. Does anyone have any recommendations on a route and list of absolute must see places/experiences?

Both of us want to soak up as much culture as possible in that time but don't want to feel that we are simply rushing around and just skipping from place to place to tick off items on list.

Also if we wanted to visit Nepal would it be possible to do so in this 2 months or would you recommend Nepal as a trip in its own right and if so how long? India is going to be one place we plan to visit as part of a round the world trip so we can increase the time allotted if required. Any adv... more »

Shadipur Depot

I have heard that Shadipur Depot in Delhi is the place where many of the circus performers, actors and musicians live, and do street performances. Is it common to find musicians jamming on the streets? Would it be difficult for connect with a few musicians and ask them to do an impromptu performance for a photoshoot?
