Asia - Indian Subcontinent

Hi fellow travellers,
My partner and I are considering a 2 week trip ( too short-I know) to India this summer, August time.
It's the first time for me so I have the strong wish to visit Rajhastan with its beautiful palaces. However I am concerned about the weather , my understanding is that it is 40C in the summer?
Are there any 'laid back cities' we could stop over during this stay for 2/3 days just to relax a bit and any regions you would recommend that are a bit more weather-friendly ?
I am conscious there is little time to cover many cities in this region therefore I am happy to take on recommendations regarding key sites to visit.
I am interested in historical/spiritual sites and not really into mountain hiking so I wasn't considering Kashmir...unless proven otherwise !
I have recently arrived from the Annapurna Circuit which I love it and would repeat specially for the Nepal people, their sympathy raise the traveller mind to a state of happiness and calm, as landscapes as well.
I would say that for those who prefer to walk on their own, Circuit is well prepared to do so taking respect of course of the general trekking guidelines on the Circuit and specially to Height Sickness on altitude. For the rest, enjoy and let things happen.
Here my Trekking register:
- Day 0. Kathmandu, go to NTB office (saturday closed!) to obtain TIM and ACAP permits, it takes 1-2 hours, take 4 photos!. Also go to Kathmandu bus station to buy tickets to Beshi Sahar for next day.
- Day 1. Bus Kathmandu - Beshi Sahar. Once arrived, trekking starts! Beshi Sahar 4:20 pm Buhlbhule 5:30 pm
- Day 2. Buhlbhule 8:00 am - Tal 6:00 pm Long day journey, for ...
Me and my fiancee are planning for a 7-8 days honeymoon starting from 5 July'2012. We are looking for travel within India. Since its the monsoon season, its a off season at most places that I have looked up. We don't mind a little rain now and then. We wouldn't want it to be a complete washout.
In brief what we expect is: Scenic beauty- adventure and luxury.
And to elaborate: the place where we stay should be scenic, not a very crowded city kinda place, after lazing in till noon we would to indulge in some kinda sight-seeing or some kind of adventure sports (rafting, water skiing, snow skiing ) and then after this when we could return in the evening plunge into a pool, Jacuzzi or get a massage or something. Also another criterion is we wouldnt want to travel a place where it hot or humid.
Here are some of the options we are considering:-
Kashmir- scenic beauty, so... more »
Hey to all fellow travelers :)
I am currently thinking about a spontaneous trip to India since it has been a dream of mine for a long time already.
Unfortunately I am planning this trip alone as solo female traveler and I have read a lot information concerning how dangerous it can be to be traveling by yourself as a girl through India, which really scared me off today to be honest.
(I have already been traveling through south-east Asia for a bit so I am kinda used to being treated a little bit different as a woman when traveling alone but through all the stories I have heard and written I think India is a totally different calibre of traveling...)
So now I've got a few questions before I want to start planing a trip because I feel a little bit discouraged:
Do you guys think it is safe for a female traveler in India?
Are there any places (other than the ones which ar... more »
I've done research but can't find any reliable information. I was wondering if any of you know if it's possible to cross over land from Bhutan into China. I know we have to do a tour in Bhutan.
Hope someone can help.
I need help in planing my itinerary for my trip in August 2012.
We are 4 friends wanting to ride on our BIKES across Leh-Ladhak.
This would be the first time any of us is getting to this region, we are in no hurry and want to cruise. We have around 20 days to make a round trip from Delhi :)
I have referred this website and tried putting up my itinerary, but am too amateur at it. Your suggestions will be greatly helpful to us :)
The following is the vague plan I set up, with a 100 flaws may be :P
Leave from Belgaum to Delhi
Ride from Delhi to Amritsar
Stay over night at Amritsar
Visit Golden Temple and Wagah Border
Stay over night at Amritsar
Ride from Amritsar to Jammu
Local Sight seeing
Stay over night at Jammu
Ride from Jammu to Pa... more »
I have a one way ticket, Kolkata to Bangkok, on may 31, with Air Asia.
Thai immigration won't ask for a ticket out but Air Asia might do it...
I would appreciate reports from people recent experience, leaving from Kolkata, with Air Asia.
May all have happy travel!
Me and a friend are strong paddlers who have experience in big water, were living on a shoestring and are looking at doing some paddling up here (we would be mad not to). We were thinking of renting kayaks and equipment and getting public busses/taxis/renting a car to get from river to river, but were not sure what would be best.
What Im wanting to know is:
- Is there a public bus timetable published anywhere, or are we going to have to work it out as we go
- can anyone recommend a driver who knows a large area (we are looking at rivers in most of the east of Nepal) and is relatively cheap. must be happy and fun!
- Any rivers that we cant miss?
- White water nepal? good book? In date? I know landslides and monsoon currents change rivers and Im not looking forward to running an un-scoutable gorge only to find out the bottom has a class VI hole...
Oh, and anyone wants to join ... more »
Should I go west coast or East coat for weather ?.Like to swim surf if possible.Looking to rent a bike and tour the island spending no more than 10 usd a night for room.Possible?.
I would like to visit Bodh Gaya and take a tour of the ancient buddhist sites around Bihar and UP.
Bihar does have a terrible reputation and I must say it is the only place in India where I have ever felt in danger.
How easy is it to find a good, safe tour to those places in Bodh Gaya?
I could only fit in Chitwan if I would stay one day - i.e. two nights, coming from Bandipur and moving on to Kathmandu. I don't want to book a package as i would only like to do the elephant walk and jeep tour, maybe the canoe but not all the rest (done some of these things in other places). I would stay outside the park and presume there is no real need to book accommodation upfront?
If you have been recently, would you consider it worth the long transport just to be there for one day?
Also, I would be going mid May, any advise about that timing (I already heard it's not good for jungle walks because of high vegetation)?
Anyone ever successfully changed a flight date with Jet Airways online as Im in China now and no offices here .
I've just returned from Sri Lanka and would really love some opinions on the costs of travelling there. Despite reading some comments mentioning it being expensive, I was quite surprised at the high cost of accommodation especially since the quality didn't really match the price.
For anyone heading there, don't rely on the prices in the LP guide. Obviously over time prices will change but I found most of the listed prices had pretty much doubled since the guide was printed.
I didn't go on a shoestring budget but had I been, I think I would have struggled as things added up quickly. $30USD to get into Sigiriya for example. It's an interesting cultural site but surely it can't go up in price any more or people will stop going? I guess I just struggled to figure out what things were 'worth' as prices were all over the place. Perhaps it's because I've been to places like Thailand where... more »
Just wondered if anyone can confirm to me some of the rough driving distances by bus (in hours) especially Colombo to Kandy.
Having only Google mapped the distances it is telling me for example that Colombo to kandy is only around 2 hours although I've read contradicting info saying that Google maps doesn't take into account the terrain
My planned rough itinery is Colombo to Kandy and around then back to the cost for bentoa and Unawatuna.
Can anyone please give me an idea of the travel times by bus?
Apologies for the simplist of questions but can anyone tell me from where and how much should a taxi or minibus be costing from the Airport to Colombo? And Aldo where exactly do the buses stop in Colombo?
