I'm planning a 2-weeks trip to Bangladesh with a friend in the period 15-31 December.
I've just read the news about the recent hartals (30 november-2 december) and I'm looking for updated information about security / safety in the country, if possible by people who is living, working or travelling in Bangladesh right now.
Our itinerary will be the following:
- Dhaka - 3 days (with Sonargaon) 15-17 dec
- Bogra - 3 days (with Paharpur) 18-20 dec
- Rajshahi - 2 days (with Natore, Puthia) 21-22 dec
- Khulna - 2 days (with Bagerhat) 23-24 dec
- Barisal - 1 day - 25 dec
- ferry Barisal-Chandpur + train Chandpur-Comilla - 26 dec
- train Comilla-Sylhet
- Sylhet - 1 day - 27 dec
- Srimangal - 2 days - 28-29 dec
- Dhaka - 1 day - 30 dec
We're going to travel by public transport (buses, 2 trains (Rajshahi-Khulna and Comilla-Sylhet) and 1 ferry-launch (Barisal-Chandpur... more »
Evidently a new 72 hour countrywide Hartal begins begins Sunday November 10 at 6:00AM.
I will arrive at the Dhaka International Airport shortly after this this Hartal begins.
Is it going to be safe for Western tourists to travel from the airport into the center of town?
What is the safest way for tourists to make this trip?

Understand it is difficult to get into yards but I read that there is a pier somewhere in the area that extends well into mud flats where you can get a good view of some ships. Can anyone tell me (maybe Mahmud?) if it is possible to get public bus to this area?
Due to being unable to cancel or change ticket, I will have to fly to Dhaka and then travel to Sylhet (12th Dec arrival. Departure 2nd Jan)
Just in case there is protest going on:
1. What are the facilities inside airport just in case I get stuck and cannot go out?
2. Are there any hotels walking distance away from the Dhaka airport (so at least stay there if unable to travel). Please let me know website or phone no
3. Am I right in saying these protests stop after 6pm (i.e. ok to travel after 6 pm)
4. Finally, can I catch a domestic flight to Sylhet? Are the flights frequent? Can I book ticket when I get there?
Many thanks for your help.
we want to book a train ticket for the train Parabat express from Dhaka departure 6:40 to Sylhet (Strimangal). At Sunday 8 of December.
Can someone give me information about renting a cheap ($5 - $10/per day) room or apartment in Rangamati or Cox's Bazar? Hotels are fine, but I like to make my own food, and follow my own routine. I am a blogger, and would also like to fin a Bangla language teacher in either Rangamati, Cox's Bazar or Chittagong.
Thank you. I appreciate any information.
Myself and my boyfriend were hoping to volunteer for one month in Bangladesh in early 2014 and were wondering if anyone could recommend any good organisations for us to look at. I am a chartered accountant and my boyfriend is a structural engineer and we would like to utilise our skills if possible.
Protests have occurred in the past as i've learned by reading up on Bangladesh.
Anyone there in Bangladesh to give an update on this protest...
1. how long is the protest expected to last?
2. what is different about this protest from previous protests?
I am planning to take my dad to Bangladesh next year in 2014... he is around 80yrs old but fit as a feather. He was born in Undivided India (in Dhaka), so this is a journey he is really looking forward to.
Now I don't know ANYTHING about Bangladesh. I am wondering if I can land in Dhaka (from Kolkata) and then train it around to a few places that maybe even he hasnt been to during his childhood days. The names that come to my mind are far eastern provinces like Chittagong etc. I have a few questions, would be grateful if any of you can provide some directions :
1. Is 5-7 days enough to plan a trip like this? Assuming we would spend 2 days in Dhaka first?
2. How easy/difficult is it to make it to Chittagong from Dhaka? I train or hire car a better option? What do these cost roughly?
3. I am keen to soak in a bit of east Bengal culture myself - any recommendations?
4. Any sugg... more »
A friend and I are planning to intern with Grameen Bank this winter from Dec 22 to Jan 3. We are American (get a visa at the airport I assume) and Kenyan (no visa required). I've received my offer letter and he is still waiting on his (I hear everyone gets accepted? He hasn't gotten a response yet and its been weeks...) for us to get a grant from our university to go to Grameen.
I was wondering if the good people here have had any experience interning with Grameen Bank or know what's good with Dhaka during the period of Dec 22 to Jan 3. We have no experience with Bangladesh at all and we are interested in trying out microfinance as well as learning about Bangladesh culture during our time here, but we have no clue what to do as to accommodations and etc. I looked a bit on this forum and people recommend the Grand Prince Hotel, which appears to have hiked its p... more »
I know this is pretty much high season anywhere in the worlds beach destinations, but is it the same for St.Martens?
I'll be in bangladesh all of december and just trying to suss out a place to spend the holidays, naturally this island seems perfect!
Am I able to book ahead for the midrange/cheaper accomodation? Can someone link me to a guesthouse that takes bookings via email?
Thanks a bunch!
Does anyone have any realistic idea of how this will affect travelling in Bangladesh? I don't care about delays, etcetera to transport , it's more about any impact it would have on safety/where to avoid. Obviously the FCO will advice strongly against all travel to the region unless absolutely necessary: then again, they do that for half the world so some more realistic advice would be preferable! Obviously, entering the country in the next few weeks ( I was planning 10th December) would be at my own risk: just trying to gauge the situation as best as possible! Any help would be much appreciated!
Regards & thanks

Hello, we are due to arrive in Bangladesh this Friday, and looking to spend a week exploring first Sreemangal, then Dhaka and finally Sundarbands.
On the one hand, travel agents that I've been in touch with tell me that everything is fine and safe. On the other hand, I monitor Bangladeshi news sites, and have for example come across this http://bdnews24.com/politics/2013/11/25/48-hour-opposition-blockade-from-tuesday
It looks like from next Tuesday not only roads, but also rail and waterways, and not only in Dhaka, but country-wide, will be blocked. Can anyone please explain how these things are supposed to work, specifically (1) will we be safe (2) are any areas safer or more dangerous than others (3) will travel still be possible?

Does anyone have any recent information about getting an Indian tourist visa from Dhaka? is it possible? I'll be visiting Bangladesh in June and currently in South East Asia. Both KL and Bangkok aren't looking like super options for an Indian tourist visa at the moment. Was wondering if it was any easier in Dhaka? Cheers
I want to visit Bangladesh for few days 10 - 14 March 2014. I will come by air and I would like to ask, whether is necessary to have return ticket to obtain visa on arrival at the airport as we would like to leave Bangladesh on land border. Is it also necessary to apply for route permit now?
