Stomach Issues

Ok, so I've heard horror stories about people spending their vacations on the throne and obviously want to avoid that at all costs. So what are some of the best strategies for staying healthy and with a happy tummy while traveling in Sri Lanka? I know not to eat any street food, food washed in tap water, etc. but I am also looking for advice on medicine. I've heard some people take low dose anti-biotics while in Sri Lanka or take pepto everyday just to calm things down. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

8 Days in Sri Lanka

Hi,

I am considering a trip to Sri Lanka in January for about 8 days. After a bit of internet research I have come up with a provisional itinerary but would like some advice on whether it is doable, whether I have missed anything 'must see' etc.

Day 1 - flight arrives 10am, spend afternoon exploring Colombo
Day 2 - leave early with driver guide to Kandy, maybe via the elephant sanctuary. Spend the afternoon in Kandy
Day 3 - Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
Day 4 - Nuwara Eliya to Yala National Park
Day 5 - Yala National Park Safari AM, drive to Tangalle PM
Day 6 - Tangalle beach day
Day 7 - Tangalle to Galle AM, spend afternoon in Galle
Day 8 - Most of day on beach (maybe Hikkadduwa) then drive back to the airport. Flight isn't until 3am so don't need to be there until gone midnight. Alternative for this day is morning on beach, afternoon in Colombo and then go to airport. Depend... more »

Sri Lanka solo Traveller

Hi¡
I have a plane ticket to Sri Lanka for the 4th to 19th August. I was planning to do it on my own and hiring a driver and book the hotels, but I also was considering if may be other person/s would be on the same situation than me and would like to share the driver if the itinerary is what they also want. Basically i would like to visit Dambulla, Sigiriya Minneriya Nat park, Polonnaruwa, Kandy , Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains, Yala or Uda Walawe one of them and to end the trip in the South coast Mirissa , Tangalla beaches around( few days ) and Galle.
I am a female and I have no interest in partying or surfing, but good company it would be appreciated.
In the other hand anyone knows a good and reliable driver to hire ? I have been checking the organized tours , but some of them have things that I am not interested at all to see or do.
Also is it safe as a sol... more »

We (couple and kid) are planning to visit SriLanka during August. We plan to go Colombo-Kandy-Hatton-Bandarawela-Mt Lavinia-Colombo. Please send me advice on travelling in Srilanka, car(with driver) hire, good accommodation (preferable with kitchenettes) and general tips.

Sri Lanka help hikaduwa, Arugam bay, highlands, yala national park

Hi. My fiancé and i just arrived in negombo, Sri Lanka and looking for some transportation advice. We will be here for 3 weeks in total.

I am a surfer traveling with a surfboard, worth mentioning as sometimes traveling with a board is a big hassle.

We are planning to head to Hikaduwa region first. I know it's the offseason there, but I've heard that you can still get decent uncrowded surf. Any advice? Also considering Midigama. Is that worth checking out?

From there, we would like to travel directly to Arugam Bay. That way we can spend some time there and then I will store my surfboard there while we travel away from the coast. I don't want to be lugging my board around jungles and tea plantations.

Then we will return to Arugam Bay for the last few days of the trip and we fly out of Mattala (HRI) international airport.

I am looking for logistical advice.

1) Be... more »

HOTEL, Hostels, LODGES - Secret-Get-Aways (the special ones)

Hi,

we are travelling to Sri Lanka for 3 weeks in November!

I would LOVE to hear from you, experiences Sri Lanka travellers, about the most and most beautiful accomodations you have been to during your trips!

We are thinking about a mixture of some fancy overnight stays (however max. of 100 EUR), and some really cheap but neat hostels/ Cabanas.

Also, from Thailand I know, that you have tons of possibilities to book beach huts! Is that possible in Sri Lanka too? If so, what are the best places for that???

We are mainly thinking about travelling north/ east!

Thanks so much!

We appreciate your help!

Rudi

Looking for advice on a general itinerary and some specific questions

Hi to everybody!

I am excited planning my next solo trip to Sri Lanka, from 6 till 29th August and I came up with an itinerary combining cultural sites, beach, hills... a little bit of everything. An now... looking at the whole itinerary, I start thinking it could be too much stops and I might get tired of travelling every couple of days. However, trips don't seem to take that long. I was in Myanmar last year and had just 4 main spots, but transport was slow and distances very long, not as in Sri Lanka I guess.

I detail my plan so I might get some feedback about its feasibility... and also I ask some specific questions just in case somebody can give some light to my doubts :-)

Day 0. Travelling.
Day 1. Arriving at Colombo 8am. Day in Colombo.
Day 2. Colombo
Day 3. Travelling in the morning by bus to Galle. Day in Galle
Day 4. Galle
Day 5. Travelling to Ella. Day in Ella... more »

Day 4 - Leave for Kandy morning, See around, stay overnight (Not sure about this!)
Day 5 - Leave for Galle next morning, Visit around, Stay at Unawatuna for the night
Day 6 - Spend next day in Unawatuna, Leave for Hambantota/ Colombo. Fly back.

What would you say about the itinerary? Any suggestions for places to stay, practical advice, transportation etc? Feel free... more »

Sri Lanka oct/nov

So my partner and I got confused by all the different monsoon seasons and somehow managed to book our Sri Lanka trip from mid oct to mid nov!!! We have since realized it's extremely wet at this time of year :-( any advice or suggestions on itinerary for this time of year would be greatly appreciated. We are thinking of booking one night in Negombo either end so we are close to airport. Do we need to prebook other accommodation? Or can we just wing it? We are hoping to stay in cheap budget style accommodation. My partner surfs, so hoping for some beach time and we would like to see some wildlife too.

Thanks in advance
Michele :o)

LONG stop over

Hi!

Coming back from Australia in August I have a long stop over at Colombo airport 0155 - 2035 any suggestions what I should do? Is it worth booking into hotel & spending an after now in the capital or should we just hang about the airport and snooze?. The 'we' is my self and an eight year old if that changes any advice. Any advice/thoughts are more than welcome 😄

3 weeks in South/ Southeast Asia in August-itinerary help

Hi, in August we plan to spend 3 weeks in Asia ((Aug 3-25). August is the only month we can take such long vacation.
We would like some help with the itinerary as we don't have much idea about this part of the world.
We were recommended to spend about 2 weeks in Sri Lanka (as it has a bit of everything- we plan to see the rice fields, elephants, mountains, temples, spend couple of days on an idyllic, peaceful beach, but not more …) and are thinking of combining it with some other interesting Asia country. We do not want to go to India. Are there any places you would suggest for our trip?

We are couple in mid 30’s, interested in nature/outdoors (but not big treks), interesting historical sights, seeing something really different from what we are used to (we are from Europe) and eating good/local food. Not partying or spending too much time in big cities and crowded places.
We ... more »
