Hi,
We leave for Sri Lanka next week!!
For the first 4 days we plan to hire a car and driver in order to do the Ancient Cities, ending in Kandy.
Should we prebook or is it easy to find a driver and car at the airport?
We arrive early in the morning, but hope to do some touring that day.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi Folks
Will be entering India for the very first time, very late one night in a month. Has anyone any recommendations of somewhere to stay which is not too pricey but not low end. Somewhere that will have a decent meal fit for a an unaccustomed westerners stomach! - Need to be broken in very gently. Is it best to get a cab to the city or stay nearer the airport for the night? I'll be wanting to get the hell out of the city for quieter, country areas the very next day!
about 1 1/12 hours by car ... up a mountains sits ASTAM with UNREAL views of Anna and Fishtail and that lower range .... it is spectacular. watching the sun set and trun the snow into firey ice!!!!!!! contact Bishra at themarigold - corner of LAKESIDE/and that main street...
In Pohkara totallyworth ... then u can do a lower trek from there or a high montain ridge trek which is what we did. Tell him ZUNI said hello!!!!!!

I gotta share this as much as i HOPE this trek does NOT get over crowded..... it is 8 days ... you do a ridge that has theAnnas on one side and Fish tail ahead ... plus other ranges lower down from the start..
I started it is ASTAM at a cool cool and BEYOND gorgeous place with the guy who runs the marigold Hotel (lakeside and the main street 0 corner .. His name is Bishwar... he was great... it was about 4000 meters and hardly anyone on it... to keep it that way ...you gotta go to Pohkara and seek him out. I am so grateful that the universe gave me this experience as so much of the area is so full of folks ( except in the cold season ... that wikll NOT be the problem!!!!!)
but inOCT/Nov ... it is so so busy. so seek out this guy for a newly opened route that runds the ridge. u will NOT be di...

Hi there, I'm hoping someone could give me some information regarding entering Nepal overland from the east. First, is this option available? The LP India book mentions something about being able to do so, so I was thinking about heading up to Darjeeling and from there move on to enter Nepal from the east. Is the border check point going to be up and running? Any problems I might encounter? I would be headed there shortly after New Year's.
Also, in general, what are the road conditions like during the winter months in Nepal? Anything to be afraid of?? Am thinking about Darjeeling-Kathmandu-Pokhara- then back down to India through Sunauli.
Any info would be great, thanks!!

Made it from the UK to India and now I'm looking at sending my bike at some point before heading off to SE Asia for some well earned diving. Doesn't need to be airfreight but it does need to be there within two months so I'm hoping someone out there has done similar and has advice on the subject. Carriers, options, that sort of thing.
Thanks in advance and apologies if this info is already out there... a bike is a little larger than most parcel post is my main concern.

Dear all, i read from UK travel advice website :
Indian Currency in Nepal
Following Reserve Bank of India guidelines and to prevent the growing counterfeiting of Indian currency in the region the Government of Nepal has banned the use, import or export of 1,000 Indian rupee and 500 Indian rupee notes. British Nationals should ensure that they do not enter or leave Nepal with either 1,000 or 500 Indian rupee notes. The Revenue Investigation Department will confiscate any notes and also impose a fine of the amount seized, payable in local currency. Lower denomination notes from India are accepted in Nepal.

I'm looking for suggestions for a good ashram to practice Hatha yoga. i'd like to check out a place for 3 or 4 days, and if i like it, stay up to a month.i would prefer doing it down south if possible, but i haven't had much luck on the internet. would like to stay away from hippy new agey ashrams who charge 1000 rupees for a room and are full of dreadlocked nastys who think that studying yoga for a week will somehow enlighten them.. austere is fine and i want to go to a place that only makes you pay the price it takes to stay there with everything else donation based. i'm not looking for something easy, but looking to learn more of the theory and practice of yoga where i can do it in a quiet and focused environment.
thanks.
by the way, hippies, i'm just joking. you don't smell that bad.

Which trek route is recommended? I am looking to do a moderate trek, about a week long.
Also, are there any recommendations on tour companies for treks? I exchanged a few emails with Windhorse Tours (any experiences with them?), and as a result of what I have read in this site, I just emailed Blue Poppy.
Finally, what is the current situation with the daily tariff? How much should I expect to be charged if I am going solo?
Thanks.

My husband and I are going to be in India for 2 1/2 weeks, visiting the usual Delhi / Agra / Rajasthan highlights. Seeing all the threads, here and on other forums, asking about the best places to exchange money has concerned me a little. We were just planning on withdrawing money from ATMs, since we aren't going to be away from major towns for more than 2-3 days. Is this a bad idea? Are ATMs that allow international withdrawals (Maestro / Cirrus) really so few and far between? I really didn't think anyone used travellers cheques any more...

Hi,
Will be in Kerala from 6th January for about 2 - 3 days. Was intending to tour the backwaters and in the process go from Alapuzza to Kollam.
Am a solo traveller so are houseboats suitable or will the public ferries be a better option?
Thanks.
