Turkey Trip Report - 24 days across Turkey including SE Anatolia

We spent 24 days (21 April-14 May excluding travel days) flying into Izmir Airport (direct flight from Stansted) and out of Van with Pegasus Airlines (for the final itinerary we should have flown out of Kars but we hadn’t planned to make it that far when we booked the flights). We didn’t visit Istanbul on this trip as we had been previously.

Overall a great trip although I could have happily spent 3 times as long in Turkey and still not visited everywhere I would have liked to!

Weather – ranged from hot (30 degrees C) to chilly and wet in some places in East Turkey (Kars, Dogubayazit).

Buses – generally excellent even in East Turkey but hard to find the timetables in advance as there are lots of bus companies (no problem for frequent routes). We brought most bus tickets on the day (at the otogar or at bus company offices) and overnight buses the day before. Dolmus/minibuses ... more »

Dubronovnik to Mostar in one day

I have seen travel blogs saying that one day tour to Mostar is possible. I am not sure if it is by public tranport/bus. Some says it is not possible. Anyone have tried this or knows the latest situation.

Outdoor camping & Tusheti

Dear all,

I was planning a ~10 days trip to Georgia for end of July. I planned to mostly trek in the country, initially thinking about Svaneti and Kazbegi area.

I heard that summertime is pretty hot in the mountains, so was thinking about is it possible to sleep outside? I mean, if I start trekking on my own, and at night lay down a tent (or only a sleeping bag), do you see any potential dangers? Is it cold at night? Maybe it is a silly question but should I be afraid from anything: hostile locals (although I read that Georgian people are very friendly), wild animals etc.?

Also just recently I read about Tusheti, but only a few information was available on the internet. Is it very remote? Is it possible traveling there on your own (foot) alone? How many days should be minimum reserved for a trip in the area?

Thanks for any advice, and sorry if any of the questions look s... more »

Villa rental in Ulcinj area

We're two couples (4 persons) looking for a private rental villa in Montenegro. We're hoping for a beach spot which is not too crowded. Any good locations near Ulcinj? The town centre seems touristy and crowded. Ada Bojana might be an alternative but we can't find a lot of villa options for four persons. Good kite surfing conditions would be a bonus.

Romania, 1 week enough ?

Hello, i have plans on going to romania this summer. We would probably take the train from budapest, and go directly to Brasov.

1. any tips on hikes in this region, anyone that has done any bearspotting, is it worth it ? Thinking about going to one of the mountains, whicbh is 2-3 days at least ? Anyone with experience in this ?
2. Any other tips on stuff to do in ROmania, we would fly out of Bucharest, a bit stressed timewise, would friday-friday be OK for a stay in brasov and a hike, bears, and then something else , timeewise ? , or Friday-Sunday needed ?
/D

Amount of time in Georgia this summer, travel buddy ?

Hello,
I have recently got the idea to go for hiking in Georgia this summer. I have a couple of questions

1. how many weeks are needed in order to do some hikes, prefferably in different regions of the country ( understood there are a few (3) main areas ? I would also like to do one or two summits in this time. Would 3 weeks be sufficient

2. anyone that would like to join me ? is it ok to hike on your own otherwise ? Is it tenting that is the way to go on multiday-hikes, or are there guesthouses/cabanas etc on the trails like in some countries ?

Accomodation in Hani i Elezit?

Hello,

I will be travelling from Pristina to Skopje, but later than the last bus that leaves at 5pm.

Is there a way to travel to Đeneral Janković / Hani i Elezit and staying the night there, before continuing to Skopje early in the morning? For that I would need a hotel, but not sure if there is one.

Or, can I take a taxi from Hani i Elezit to Skopje, still in the late evening? How much would that cost?

Thanks for your advice.

Caravanserais and other sights in Cappadocia

We have 3 days, 2 nights in Cappadocia and are travelling as a family. We thought we might do the green tour to see some of the things of interest to us (underground city, cave churches etc). One of the things that we would love to visit is a caravanserai. These don't seem to be included in the green tour. Does anyone have any suggestions on easy ways to visit a caravanserai from Goreme (is public transport an easy option (we have 2 children)), the budget is limited so booking private tours/driver for the 4 of us probably won't be feasible judging by the prices I have seen on line so between 80-100 E per person for a day.

Thanks.

Istanbul half day-trip recommendation and late night transfer to Sabiha?

Dear fellow travellers

I will travel through Istanbul at the end of July, and need to change flight from Atatürk to Sabiha Gökcen. My flight will arrive at 13:45 and depart at 0:55 so have a couple of hours to spend in this beautiful city. Could you please recommend what to see from Istanbul in such short time (I remember Sultanahmet was quite easily accessible from Atatürk)?

Also I read that many people asked in previous threads about how to get to Sabiha, and there were many concurring opinions about it, so I thought it is worth to ask you again (especially that my flight departs in a very late hour).
I would prefer public transportation avoiding taxi (low cost option) and read something that Havas does not operate its airport shuttle buses at the moment (?), and also read something about the combined travel of ferry (Kadiköy?) and bus E9 - but could not find any schedule ... more »

Camping in Khosrov Reserve

Has anyone been camping in Khosrove Nature Reserve? The Armeniapedia page (http://armeniapedia.org/wiki/Khosrov_Nature_Reserve) says we just need to call someone for permission, but I want to ask here first. Please share anything you think might be useful.

Thanks!
