After spending a week in Romania, I plan to arrive in Veliko Tarnovo by bus at 10:30 on Sunday 9 June.
After spending the day walking around Veliko Tarnovo, I would need to take the night train with sleeping couchette departing VT station at 19:16 so that I can arrive in Istanbul on the next morning of 10 June..
While I am in Romania, I can easily buy a train ticket with sleeping compartment from Bucharest to Istanbul. Can I use that ticket to board the train in Veliko Tarnovo instead of beginning my train trip in Bucharest?
Does anyone have other ideas to help? Although it would be easier to take a Hunturturizm bus from VT to Istanbul, I would pre... more »

I plan to go to Bulgaria in mid-september and I got few first basic questions:
1. Can you recommend about good guide book , specially about trekking in Bulgaria? I want to go to Rila ,Pirin and Rodophi
2. The montains huts: Are they all open in September? They all serve food so I don't have to carry with me?
3. Do most trails start and finisg in the same point? so I can leave unecessery equipment in the hostel/hotel?
4. is it easy to go by bus between all these destinations?
I am going to Bulgaria in July/August and am very keen to camp.
Can anyone recommend any good campsites anywhere in Bulgaria?
What are the conditions like?
I am horrendously arachnophobic so I need places that are clean! Spiders indoors are something I can't handle!
I will go to Bulgaria next week. Can't find any bus or train online between the 3 places:
1. Sandanski to Kazanlak
2. Kazanlak to Veliko Tarnovo
3. Melnik back to Sandanski around evening ( am planning day trip to Melnik from Sandanski)
By the way, any night train or bus from Sighisoara to Sighetu Marmatiei? Can anyone help to advise.
Thank you in advance.
I'll be visiting Greece next June and I want to add a little bit of Bulgaria to this trip. I already visited parts of the country (Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv and Rila Monastery) a few years ago, I loved the time I had there so I want to see more.
I'd like to know what new things I could see on my way to Greece. I want to cross the border as west as possible, closest to Macedonia as possible, probably in Kulata from what I see in Google map.
monasteries and small attractive villages (as unspoilt and untouristy as possible) are what I'm most interested in.
thank you very much for your help:)
Hello. Has anybody an idea what the cost would be for a taxi from Sofia up to Rila Monatery and back (day tour). Travelling with children, so don't want to do a group tour. Thank you very much.
How long does it take to explore and enjoy Rila Monastery?
I am planning a day trip from Sofia to Rila Monastery and I notice that the shuttle/tours seem to only allow for a short visit. In your experience, is 1 and a half hours enough to explore the site? I've wanted to visit for a long time so it would be a shame to rush it. But if it's quite compact then it probably would be enough.
And if anyone has gone with the shuttle, was it worth it compared to public transport? (Is it much easier, do you get much local insight?) I have read on another forum that you can get to the monastery without a guide by getting the no. 5 tram, changing at Ovcha Kupel and getting a bus to Rila from there. But with the timetables, this also sounds like quite a short stop.
My other option would be to stay overnight but I feel about strang... more »
Hello fellow travellers,
I will be in Bulgaria from mid-May to mid-June.
Any suggestions on interesting hikes that would be accessible at this time of year? Are there any resources available, such as maps and information centres?
Apparently, there is a network of huts in many of the mountain locations. Are reservations required to access these huts?
Any tips or information would be welcome.
We know that that are old stones' bridges in Bulgaria mostly in the rho-dopes.
question: is there a website for it, to locate them?
if not is there a book with pictures and possible places where they stand?
it doesn't matter if the book is in Bulgarian language, so far there is a picture we can read Cyrillic (even not perfect)
Hi everyone. I've booked a last minute trip to Bulgaria and will be arriving via Istanbul. I have one week and know nothing about the country. What would be a good itinerary for this amount of time? I've rad a out the mknastary I. The south that sounds good. I'm not a big beach person, but would like to see some mountains as well. Is Sofia a cool town to stay in for a couple of days? Thanks for your suggestions!!! Jesse
FYI: The National Tourist information Center in Sofia is no longer at Sveta Sofia. It has moved to the underground Metro entrance at Sofia University. Friendly and helpful staff and plenty of good maps and info.
I'll be moving to Sofia in a few months.
Am I crazy to think of using a scooter as my main form of transportation there?
Advice appreciated. If I don't use a scooter I'd have to own a car and the scooter just seems such a nice cheap option... but I wonder about the weather.
we are considering a 4-5 day city trip to Sofia ( or Budapest ? ).
Is Sofia worth a visit for 4-5 days ?
Any tips ? We wll rent an apartment and have some drinks in the evening.
Any day -trips ? Will it be cold by the end of october ?
So, after much debate about which country to move to next (Azerbaijan, Philippines, Hong Kong, Germany... there were lots of countries in the running) I've settled on Bulgaria.
The job is sorted. I'll arrive in August.
Just wondering if there's anyone who lives in Sofia and who posts here. I'm open to any advice for things to think about and I'll happily buy you a beer once I arrive. I've had great luck meeting people off tt every other time I've moved countries so I thought it was worth trying again.
