Cuba advice
Hi there,
I am heading over to Cuba next week with my girlfriend and was going to do about 8 days travelling around before chilling in Varadero for a week and was just looking for advice on things to do during the day, We are quiet adventurous and always up for a good time, the plan is to spend a couple of nights in the following places:
Havana
Cienfeugos
Trinidad
Santa Clara
Has anyone been here and have any advice on places to go and things to do, or even other places close to these?
Just haven't had time to research properly!
Any advice would be great, thanks a mill, Maurice

Wax Museum - Bayamo
I'm not big on museums/art galleries in Cuba particularly of the permanent variety as their general standard is so low compared to many other parts of the world.
However reading Havana Times today reminded me of one that is really worth a peek if you are going to be in this lovely small city - the Museo de Cera (good word to know if you are prone to blocked ears in whilst in Cuba!) has many famous Cuban figures represented.
Here's a new addition

Central Cuba around Christmas
Dear Forum Users,
the two of us are traveling to Cuba between the 17th and 31st of December. We have already booked hotels and a casa for most of our stay. I would like to get some help regarding the travel between cities. I also would like to know how to arrange smaller excursions. When is it better to hire a guide (and how) and when is it ok to go on our own.
I am a bit of a coward, but I would like to experience Cuba outside the resorts.
Our original plan was to rent a car and use it to travel around, but many on this forum discourage travelers from driving in Cuba.
So, here is our plan:
Cuba experts: how does this look?
This is our schedule when we head east and was wondering what you all thought. Also, if there are any must sees, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Playa Larga= 3 nights
Cienfuegos= 2nights
Trinidad= 4nights
Holguin (specifically Gibara) 4 nights
Santiago = 3 nights
Santa Clara = 2 nights
Varadero = 3 nights
Am I missing anything that I can't get to on a day trip? Any suggestions?
We are taking the Viazul (and taxis) and was wondering if it is safe to keep our bag (locked) with the Casa owners during the day after we check out when the bus leaves later in the day? Or should we plan on just backpacking for these 3 weeks?
Thank you in advance, everyone!!!

Australian visas being rejected for PVE/PRE?
Hi TT-ers,
Firstly, big thanks to the various informative posts from Wockala, Mulbultjari and Sayeh on recent flight route escapades...congratulations and all the best to you guys.
My husband was granted his 309 spouse visa last week. This was issued in the form of a visa grant letter (emailed through by DIAC in Canada, where the application was assessed), and not a label in the passport.
When he went to apply for his PRE, he was told that they would only accept a label in a passport.
Others - especially those of you who had a fiance/spouse visa approved this year - have you run into this problem in getting your exit visas, or did you get labels in the passport?
My thinking is that we've just gotten stuck with the one obstinate Cuban official who wants to interpret the PRE rules literally. My husband is from Vinales, so is applying in Pinar. Would it make much differenc...

General License
Hello everyone,
I have sent PM to a couple of my fellow posters with respect to the infamous "General License" for those of us who were born in Cuba, and I would like to visit a close family member in Cuba. I got an answer with respect to how the general License and how it works but not on whether I physically have to have a piece of paper when travelling to and from Cuba through Nassau ,Bahamas.
My question to the board is, when clearing U.S customs in Nassau, Bahamas, when returning back to the U.S if asked by the U.S Customs officer, "did you travel to any other country while in the Bahamas", should I say "YES I went to Cuba on a General License to see my Family?" OR?
Thank you all
Juan

casa in Santiago
Hi
I'm trying to track down info on a couple particular (no pun intended) casas in Santiago.
One is a home owned by Edgardo Y Mariam Gutierrez
@ Terraza No.106, Reparto Ampliacion de Terrazas.
The other is the family of Senor Luis Raul Mercaderes Perez
@ Hartmann #262, between Havana and Maceo. (Hartmann is also known as San Felix)
Does anyone know if they have internet access for inquiery information? My Spanish which was minimal at best about 10 years ago when I travelled to South America is almost non-existant at the moment so I would rather email, if possible, then try a conversation over the phone...even though Senor Gutierrez apparently speaks fluent English.
I'm looking for a two to three week stay in Santiago, to become climatized and take Spanish lessons, before continuing my bike trip up the West Coast.
Any info, or advice would be greatly appreciated. T...

Jose Marti airport to Varadero
Hi again,
If my flight from Santiago arrives in jose marti airport at 16.25, I presumably am not going to get into town in time to catch the 17.40 Viazul bus to Varadero, which appears to be the last of the day on that route.
Other than spending 100cuc on a private taxi (on my own), are there any other options to get to Varadero?
I've searched a lot on this forum, but most of the posts on this topic are very dated, so I'm wondering if anybody has any up to date information.
Also, if coming in on an internal flight, can I assume getting through the airport is quicker than from an international flight? Customs/passport check etc?
Thanks again.
Siob.

diving Maria La Gorda
Hi folks,
I will be heading to Cuba for the first time for 3 weeks in November and I'm considering heading down to Maria la Gorda from Vinales for a few days diving. I'm just after some first hand advice as to the quality of the diving there and if its worth the trip down there and back. I understand that there are other fantastic and pristine areas off Cuba ( Isla De Juventude & Jardines de la Reina ) but these are a little too hard to access in my limited time. Doesn't need to be world class, just some nice vis, reefs and fish will keep me happy.
And maybe a rum afterwards :-)
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Cardenas Casa
Can anyone recommend a good casa particular in or close to Cardenas? I would prefer a larger accomodation rather than a single room, an apartment would be great.
Also looking for the same type of casa in or close to Australia? thanks

cienfuegos casa particular
Any recent advice for a casa particular downtown? Seems like prices in Cienfuegos are a bit higher than elsewhere: 30-40 cuc. My wife and I would like to find something at 25-30. Thanks--
Currency at ATMs
I have read on other threads that the CIBC Advantage debit card works in ATMs. Can both CUC and CUP be withdrawn from ATMs?

Itinerary - Fly to Santiago or car to Remedios??
HI All,
Am still working on my December itinerary....
I was planning to take a flight to Santiago while my auld pair went to Varadero, but the return flight is around €220 + the buses & taxis I'll need to take (I'll have to make my way to Varadero to meet parents). I'd love to go to Santiago, but seems like a lot of buses-taxis-planes-distance-cost for 4 nights.
So, as an alternative, I was thinking of hiring a car from Havana (probably about €300 for 5 days) & dropping the parents in Varadero (save on their bus/taxi cost)
From there driving to Remedios & basing myself there for four nights before heading back hook up with them (stopping for a few hours in Santa Clara on the way).
From Remedios I figure can visit Caibarien & Santa Maria/Las Brujas & generally chill. Couple of questions:
1) What's nightlife like in Remedios? Don't need anything wild, just a few decent ...

Credit Crad (visa) and Maestro Card - Irish Banks
Hi,
I seem to be getting contradicting advice relating to credit card and bank maestro cards in Cuba. I know ATM machines ca be tempermental and I have decided I wont use any just in case they swallow my card. But can I go into a bank and use my Irish issued Visa credit card with an Irish bank in Cuba to witdraw money? Also Can I use my Irish issued Debit maestro card in a Cuban bank to withdraw money.
Im not keen on the idea of bringing cash for 17 days? and im worried of the cards not working or being accepted,
Thanks for all advice,
David

3 days in Trinidad / Playa Ancon
Hi,
We are planning to be in Trinidad from 13:00 on Sunday to 13:00 on Wednesday, leaving us with three whole days.
We also wanted a day to unwind on the beach.
I wanted to ask, is it best to stay three days in Trinidad and then take a day trip to Playa Ancon, or to split the trip between staying in both places? Or even, stay in Playa Ancon and take day trips to Trinidad?
If it is better to split the trip, how many days are best in each location? And how long is the drive from Trinidad to Playa Ancon?
Thanks,
