Does anyone know if you can get a train from either Aktau or Beyneu to Shymkent or Taraz without going through Uzbekistan?
I'm wondering what a taxi from the Astana airport into the city should cost.
I'd be going near the train station, initially.
Also, is there any particular trick to getting better fares, or the right fare, from the airport? Places to use and not to use, etc.? Do you haggle or are some of the taxis metered? Do you trust meters or still bargain, etc.?
Searched around for this but didn't find it. But if it's been covered, just point me there.
I've been trying for a few days to book some tickets through the railways website:
It's a decent website but the system rejected several different cards I tried. I contacted the company by email and they told me that only Kazakhstan-based bank cards are accepted. This is obviously frustrating for the foreign traveller as the trains sell out very far in advance. I'll be in the country next week and could book at the cash desk, but as there are only a handful of tickets left on the trains I want to take, they will probably be sold by then. Marshrutkas are not really a possibility (I want to get from Aktau to Turkestan). Does anyone have any suggestions aside from flying? Does anyone know if travel agencies based in Kazakhstan offer a train ticket service for foreigners?
PS A previous posting suggests that it's possib... more »
I am going to Kazakhstan soon and have some questions hopefully some of you can help:
2. I am taking a bus from Almaty 2 station to Shymkent. Can tickets be pre-booked online? I cannot find any website selling the tickets and just wonder what the odds of tickets selling out are if I get it when I arrive at Kazakhstan.
Thanks in advance!
Could anyone advise me on a web site or two where I can look up on timetable and routes of buses and trolleybuses?
If not, what is the rough operating hours for each mode of transport?
Finally I have more or less fixed an itinerary to see the main sites in Kazakhstan outside Almaty.
It is a three day trip, first day to see Singing Dune and Bes Shatyr burial mounds, second day to see Charyn Canon and the third to see the Kaindy Lake and the lower Kolsai Lake.
I wonder if anyone is interested in this itinerary as I am look for someone to share the cost of this private tour. The travel dates would be 19-21 Aug .
Came across this article.
Looks like from Aug 1 they can grant 5 yr multiple entry visa. However the consulate website doesnt have any mention of it. Does anyone know if this is indeed the case?
I am flying into the Almaty airport fairly late and onto another -stan country.
I wonder how comfortable overnight sleeping at the airport can be. Has anyone done it before?
I love to hear tips for a best sleeping spot, fending off security guards if any, etc.,
Thanks for your time.
We hold French passports and are traveling in Kazakhstan on a double entry tourist visa. We arrived 3 weeks ago in Aktau from the Caspian ferry but didn't register there since we were staying for less than 5 days. By the way the registration office there is a mess , it took our friends a whole day of waiting there to finally get it. We re-entered Kazakhstan from Russia a few days ago and set up to register in Astana. We showed up at migration police last Friday at 12 and they told us that they couldn't do it (even though they were open in the afternoon) and to come back on Monday.
So we went back there today at 9:30. The whole process was extremely quick : 15 minutes! BUT the lady there told us that they could only register us for a maximum of 10 days, that we had to register again elsewhere afterwards. We were extremely surprised since we've always read that you only h... more »
My boyfriend and I are cycle-touring around Europe and would like to cycle to South-West Asia via Russia, Kazakhstan and China. We are British citizens and currently in Tallinn, Estonia. We had originally planned to cycle to Australia from England, but the UK Foreign Office has advised against travelling through the usual route of Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan etc. We are considering a route through Russia and Kazakhstan instead but the visa issue is proving to be a real headache, as China and Russia both seem to require us to apply in our home country.
My current understanding is this:
Russia: we have to apply for a visa from England, but we can do this by post, so we plan to send our passports back to our parents in England so they can do it for us. We'll have to wait/stay in a hotel so they can send them back to us.
Kazakhstan: hopefully the easiest of the three!? Th... more »
Anyone trying to get a Kazakh visa in Bishkek via the Consular Section should try elsewhere.
It has been closed (as of 15th July, 2013). No Kazakh visas can be obtained from this Section for the time being, and there is no indication as to when it will re-open.
I went this morning, got a 'Sorry but we can't help'. And now I have to go to Dubai or Ku-ala Lumper (unless I want to go through the hassle of getting a visa for Uzbekistan and then trying there).
We are two travellers visiting Almaty in september
We are looking for a Charyn canyon tour, and need advice.
Any tour companies that are worth to check?
How much will cost?
what will be a day tour?
We posted this thread in the past but received not satisfactory information, especially about the ciost and organisation.
The day available for this tour will be around 20th of September.
Thanks in advance.
Anyone traveling near Aralsk towards the end of July/beginning of August? I'm heading there over a few days and wondering if other travelers would like to split the cost of private transport to get out to see the ship graveyard and seashore. I plan to be there around August 1-2 ish - a bit flexible +/- a couple of days. But need to be on a train bound for Tashkent on August 5. I've contacted the NGO that works there and they've given me the info/pricing. contact me via email at sjk373 at gmail. Happy trails!
Hello everyone, i would like to get experiences from travellers around central asia, getting visas on the borders, russia kazakhstan, uzbekistan, china, all informations would be appreciated, i'm planing to travel from the atlantic ocean to the pacific ciclyng, and the main dificulties i think will come from the burocracy.
I shall be arriving at Kazakhstan in 2 weeks, and now am contacting some travel agencies to check the price for the tour and transport etc. While the agencies are responsive, the price they quoted is quite high, for example, a car with driver costs USD 220 a day, and a single room costs USD 45. a night I wonder if it is the average price?
Besides, in terms of itinerary, the proposed one seems very "relaxed" with few visiting places per day, So, I would very much like to hear your ideas /advice/suggestions :
If I have seen Tamghaly Petroglyphs, is it still worthwhile to see the Tamgaly-Tas rock Cravings (near Kapshagay)?
I am interested to see the Singing Dune and Bes Shatyr burial mounds. They are both in the Altyn-Emel National Park, but are they ver...
