Travel to Pamirs - suggestions for tour company / people to share jeep
We (2 people) are travelling from Dushanbe to Pamirs and back to Dushanbe in the last two weeks of July (somewhere between 17th and 28th of July).
Is anyone else travelling there during that time - maybe we could share the jeep and costs?
Or have you already made a trip to Pamirs and can recommend a company to organize the travels?

Pamir Highway & Wakhan - August
I am looking at traveling to Tajikistan at the end of August and have started looking for jeep hire for the following route:
Khorog
Roshtqala
Ishkashim
Namadut
Darshai
Zumudg
Yamchun
Yamg
Vrang
Zong
Langar
Murghab
Osh
This route is not set in stone and would take 7 - 9 days to complete the journey.
Obviously such a trip is very expensive by myself so I am interested in hearing from anyone who is planning to travel to the region around this time.
Please email me at adam_cockayne@hotmail.com if you would like more detail and chat more.
Adam.

Tajikistan with a 5yo?
We (the adults) are pretty experienced travelers, but we'd like to take our 5 year old to Tajikistan. We're lucky enough to be able to spend some money to hire 4x4 drivers and stay in good places, but we're keen to go on bespoke trips to various remote valleys, the Wakkan corridor and the GBAO in general (all with a driver).
Any views about whether to do this or not with a child?
Safety's obviously paramount, but also illness, food, altitude etc. etc.
What are people's experiences and thoughts?

I found a tour agency (with recommendations from 2 friends) with good price and program, and i wonder if someone wants to join me and share the costs? as i understood, the most expensive part is renting a car and sharing the car cost would really help
i am at my email rus.warren@yahoo.com if you want to join
Thank you

Internet access in the Eastern Pamir
Over the last 12 months Megaphon (MLT) have installed mobile telecommunications masts in all (Alichur, Murghab, Rangkul, Toktamish, Karakul & Shymak) the villages in the Eastern Pamir, enabling phone and internet communications if you are using that provider. Note that TCell coverage is only provided in Murghab.
However, as you can only get electricity in Murghab (sporadic at best) you'll need well charged computer and phone batteries. Some homestays will turn on the generator (if they have one) but the petrol is expensive so don't think that they'll do this for nothing.

Help - Pamir Highway
Hi everyone!
I'm planning a trip on the Pamir Highway from Osh to Dushanbe this August with a few friends in my car (small 4x4 but, alas, quite old). It wouldn't be a proper "tour" of the area, but a part of a much bigger itinerary so it shouldn't take more than the needed 2 or 3 days (of course we'd be taking care of the visas and the special permit for the GBAO area before leaving in the first place).
If some of you more experienced guys could help us understand if we're up to the task, that'd be much appreciated… We've already travelled all around Turkey and Armenia, but this'd be a whole new experience.
Basically, we don't speak russian, tajik nor kyrgyz… is there any way we can communicate with locals, namely local mechanics or roadside assistance in case of emergency (which could mean technical issues with the car, so that's quite tougher to explain than basic needs)? Is ...

Tajikistan Apartments?
Hello all,
I will be heading to Dushanbe for a three month internship that begins the end of August. I am looking for an apartment within close proximity to the Grand Asia Hotel (the organizations base). But my budget will only be around 200-400 a month. Any suggestions or leads? I am also open to homestays and shares!

Tajikistan solo budget travel
Hello,
I've been planning to fly to Dushanbe and then solo travel through Tajikistan to Kyrgyzstan in July 2013. What surprised me most is that transportation isn't quite as cheap as in several other less developed countries. I understand that it's due to fuel issue, lack of infrastructure and consequently due to lack of vehicles and people moving around.
Renting/buying a car is too expensive for me.
I'm planning to travel solely by shared taxis and hitching.
I'm planning to take a shared taxi from Dushanbe to Khorugh.
Then get a taxi to drive me 30km east (of Khorugh) to Tajikistan-China cargo terminal for trucks that depart to China. Hopefully I can get to Murghob with one of those. Somewhere I read that foreigners are frequently thrown out of the truck before checkpoints, since the drivers have to pay extra for another passenger. Can someone confirm this?
From Murg...

Pamir Highway On Public Transport
I am planning on traveling along the Pamir Highway from Dushanbe to Osh probably at the end of August or the start of September.
I will be traveling solo and as a rough itinerary I'm hoping to travel Dushanbe - Khorog - Ishkashim - Yamchun - Langar - Alichur - Murgab - Osh.
As hiring a vehicle for the whole or large lengths of this journey would be far too expensive on my own, how frequent is the public transportation beyond Khorog? Would it be easy enough to travel this route on a mixture of public transport and short hire between towns and sites? Other than Murgab to Osh is there any areas where transport is thin?
I would only have about 2.5 weeks to travel between Dushanbe and Bishkek.
Many thanks in advance for the replies!

Important: Visas no longer available at Dushanbe airport
Urgent notice:
As of today 23/04/2013 the Tajik Border control has ceased the issuing of tourist (or apparently any other) visas on arrival at Dushanbe airport. The reason given is that they are switching systems and that this measure is necessary until the new system is in place (undefined period but 'end of the month' was suggested).
All those travelling into Dushanbe without a visa are being deported on the following flight.
Those with visas will have no problem in entry and valid visas are still being issued at Tajik embassies.
All incoming flight airlines have now been notified so check before departure with your airline.
This post will be updated once it is confirmed that the situation is rectified.
